A numerical model study of the effects of interannual timescale wave propagation on the predictability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation

    No full text
We investigate processes leading to uncertainty in forecasts of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). A climate model is used to supply initial conditions for ensemble simulations in which members initially have identical ocean states but perturbed atmosphere states. Baroclinic transports diverge on interannual timescales even though the ocean is not eddy-permitting. Interannual fluctuations of the model AMOC in the subtropical gyre are caused by westward propagating Rossby waves. Divergence of the predicted AMOC with time occurs because the waves develop different phases in different ensemble members predominantly due to differences in eastern boundary windstress curl. These windstress fluctuations communicate with interior ocean transports via modifications to the vertical velocity and the vortex stretching term dw/dz. Consequently, errors propagate westwards resulting in longer predictability times in the interior ocean compared with the eastern boundary. Another source of divergence is transport anomalies propagating along the Gulf Stream (and other boundary currents). The propagation mechanism seems to be predominantly advection by mean currents, and we show that the arrival of westward propagating waves can trigger development of these anomalies. The mean state of the AMOC has a small effect on interannual predictability in the subtropical gyre, most likely because eastern boundary windstress curl predictability is not strongly dependent on the state of the AMOC in the subtropics. Eastern boundary windstress curl was more predictable at 45{degree sign}N when the AMOC was in a strongly decreasing state, but, unlike at 30{degree sign}N, no mechanism was found linking windstress curl fluctuations with deep transports

The outbreak of COVID-19, a world-wide pandemic, greatly affected the world leading to the death of the thousands of people world-wide. This unceasing event not only impacted the health of human beings but it also greatly impacted economy, education, and of course language, too. If we navigate through the aftermath of COVID-19, the impact of it on English language can be easily identified. It has led to many linguistic innovations which serve as a rich data base for the linguistic study. The present study aims to do morphological analysis of the terminologies that have emerged during the pandemic, COVID-19 in India. The main objective of the research is to identify and analyze the various morphological processes through which the terminologies have been created. The data for the present study were collected from various sources of print and electronic media which included newspapers, magazines, and social media platforms like face book. The sample size consisted of 50 terminologies which were identified and analyzed morphologically. The findings of the study highlight that various types of morphological processes such as affixation, compounding, blending, coinage, borrowing, abbreviation and acronyms are involved in the creation of the COVID-19 terminologies. The creation of new terminologies can be seen in terms of linguistic innovations which have greatly affected the lexicon of English language. The study attempts to contribute something meaningful to the field of morphology

Συζητούνται οι επιπτώσεις και οι περιορισμοί της μελέτης.COVID-19 represents a severe, novel, and harmful disease that posed worldwide new challenges to the well-being of people and culminated in negative life outcomes. The current study explored the perceived psychological distress and consequent health outcomes caused by COVID-19. The Narrative Thematic Analysis design was employed. Eighteen participants comprising 12 males and 6 females responded about their experiences of the recent outbreak of COVID-19. The data were collected through a telephonic semi-structured interview which was analyzed through the Thematic Analysis Method. Four themes were generated: maladaptive psychological outcomes of COVID-19, perceived poor social support, increased religious practices, and the development of physical health symptoms. Extreme anxiety, panic experiences, insecurity, helplessness, hyper-vigilance, and negative attributions represented the psychological distress, while decreased social interactions and imposed social distancing characterized the perceived social support. Increased reliance on myths, divine interpretations, and faith in God showed religious practices. Decreased hunger, insomnia, headache, breathing problems, and palpitation were some ill-health outcomes. The pandemic shaped the nature and extent of perceived psychological distress, social support, and religious practices. The first two may have caused negative health and well-being outcomes while the religious practicesmaintained equilibrium among the rest three. Immediate trans-disciplinary efforts for the effective prevention, treatment, and promotion of the affected people are recommended. Positive health practices embedded in different socio-cultural systems may also be explored to help people facing the negative consequences of the recent and future pandemics. The implications and limitations of the study have been discussed.

    No full text
As green materials, the organic nano-fiber membranes are very potential for diverse functional purposes. The growth parameters based fiber alignment; surface morphology and diameter are key attentions to control mechanical, structural, electrical, and optical properties. These physical aspects of nanofiber are diversified its practical significance in which control of growth techniques is vital. Electrospinning is a facile but pragmatic approach to adjust the growth process by regulating growth parameters. In this study, fabrication of spinning parameter preference to control the nanofiber shape, diameters, and crystalline property are investigated. Different % weight of PVP and PC71BM mixture solution for electrospinning are used in this study. It is observed that the average applied field and solution concentration of active materials are paramount to well-aligned uniform diameter nanofiber having better structure and crystalline properties. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) study of nanofiber micrograph shows the diameter size of nanofiber and it is validated by Response Surface Model (RSM). A sharp peak of polymer fiber is shown by X-ray diffraction (XRD) that realizes worthy nano-crystalline property. The overall growth process is reinforced by validation from RSM analysis

This study investigates the structural and optical characteristics of Silicon Germanium (SiGe) thin films with varying compositions and annealing temperatures for potential use in electronic and optoelectronic devices. Si0.8Ge0.2 and Si0.9Ge0.1 films were deposited onto a high-temperature quartz substrate and annealed at 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C before being evaluated using an X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and a UV-Vis Spectrometer for structural and optical properties. The results show that increasing the annealing temperature results in an increase in crystalline size for both compositions. The transmittance for Si0.8Ge0.2 decreases slightly with increasing temperature, while Si0.9Ge0.1 remains constant. The optical band gap for Si0.9Ge0.1 thin film is 5.43 eV at 800 °C, while Si0.8Ge0.2 thin film is 5.6 eV at the same annealing temperature. XRD data and surface analysis reveal significant differences between the band edges of SiGe nano-structure materials and bulk crystals. However, the possibility of a SiGe nano-crystal large band gap requires further investigation based on our study and related research works

Biomaterials as a support for catalysts are of prime importance. Tapioca root which is an abundant biopolymer source was used to synthesize cellulose supported bio-heterogeneous poly(hydroxamic acid) copper nanoparticles (CuN@PHA) and was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. The tapioca cellulose supported CuN@PHA (50 mol ppm) effectively catalyzed N-alkylation reaction of aliphatic amines with α,β-unsaturated compounds to give the corresponding alkylated products. High yields up to 95% were achieved for the converted products. The reusability of the cellulose supported nanoparticles was found to be excellent with no significant reduction of its catalytic activity over several cycles. The catalyst showed high catalytic activity having turnover number (TON) 18000 and turnover frequency (TOF) 2250 h−1
