Self-healing juvenile cutaneous mucinosis: Clinical and histopathologic findings of 9 patients: The relevance of long-term follow-up
Background: Self-healing juvenile cutaneous mucinosis (SHJCM) is a rare disorder, and its pathogenesis and long-term prognosis are unknown. Objective: To elucidate the clinical and histopathologic characteristics, pathogenesis, and outcome in patients with SHJCM. Methods: Retrospective study of 9 patients with SHCJM. To complement initial findings, data collection forms were sent to the referring physicians. Results: All patients had an acute onset of firm nodules. Of the 9 patients, 6 presented initially with waxy papules on the dorsum of the hands; 5 suffered from periorbital edema, and 6 had a febrile prodrome. Histopathologic assessment of the papules revealed dermal mucin deposition, whereas the nodules showed proliferative fasciitis-like features or nonspecific chronic lobular panniculitis. Laboratory studies elicited evidence of active viral infection in 2 patients (human herpes virus 6 and rotavirus). Seven cases had spontaneous resolution within 6 months, and 2 patients with incomplete resolution showed subsequent transition to fibroblastic rheumatism and an autoinflammatory rheumatologic disease, respectively. Limitations: This was a retrospective study with incomplete data from referring physicians. Conclusions: Although spontaneous complete regression is expected, patients with SHJCM need long-term follow-up because of the possible development of dematorheumatolgic conditions. The pathogenetic role of microbial agents deserves further investigation
Students' perceptions of the nature of evolutionary theory
This study explored how some college students understand the nature of the theory of evolution and how they evaluate its scientific status. We conducted semistructured interviews with 15 college biology seniors in which we asked them to explain why they think evolution assumes the status of a scientific theory, how it compares to other scientific theories, and what criteria do they use to determine if an explanation is scientific or not. Students' responses encompassed five themes that include evidence, certainty, experimentation, method of theory generation, and prediction. Those themes focused on the theory's empirical dimension which seemed to be derived from a generic and simplistic model of physical science theories that valued direct evidence. Demanding that evolutionary theory conform to this model reveals a misunderstanding of its nature. This misunderstanding was expressed in relation to aspects of methodology, explanation, and prediction. The findings underscore the need for using explicit discipline- and context-specific approaches to teaching and learning about scientific theories. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Abd-El-Khalick F., 2001, J SCI TEACHER ED, V12, P215, DOI DOI 10.1023-A:1016720417219; Abd-El-Khalick F, 2000, INT J SCI EDUC, V22, P665, DOI 10.1080-09500690050044044; Abd-El-Khalick F, 2000, J RES SCI TEACH, V37, P1057, DOI 10.1002-1098-2736(200012)37:101057::AID-TEA33.0.CO;2-C; ALEIXANDRE MJ, 1992, INT J SCI ED, V14, P51; American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1990, SCI ALL AM; Anderson DL, 2002, J RES SCI TEACH, V39, P952, DOI 10.1002-tea.10053; Bartholomew H, 2004, SCI EDUC, V88, P655, DOI 10.1002-sce.10136; BISHOP BA, 1990, J RES SCI TEACH, V27, P415, DOI 10.1002-tea.3660270503; Brem SK, 2003, SCI EDUC, V87, P181, DOI 10.1002-sce.10105; Brickhouse N. Seismic strengthening of bond-critical regions in rectangular reinforced concrete columns using fiber-reinforced polymer wraps
The use of external fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) wraps for bond strengthening of spliced reinforcement in rectangular reinforced concrete (RC) columns and the consequent effect on the seismic response of the columns are experimentally investigated. Fullscale-unconfined and FRP-confined column specimens with lap-spliced reinforcement at the base were tested Also, companion columns with continuous reinforcement and with internal steel confinement to satisfy the ACI building code requirements for regions of high seismic hazard (earthquake-resistant columns) were tested for comparison. It was found that confining the spliced zone with FRP wraps increased the bond strength of the spliced bars, reduced the bond deterioration and pinching under cyclic loading, and increased the lateral load resistance and ductility of the columns. The corresponding improvements approached those of the earthquake-resistant columns. The lateral strain developed in the FRP increased with decreasing ratio of concrete cover to splice diameter and with increasing area of FRP wraps. The predictions of bond strength of spliced bars in FRP-confined concrete using available design expressions were in good agreement with the test data. © 2008, American Concrete Institute. A cross-sectional study of postpartum depressive symptoms and infant weight outcomes: do well-child visits make a difference?
Background: Maternal postpartum depression affects 10% to
20% of new mothers, but little research has examined its
relationship with weight outcomes during infancy and whether
clinical interventions can mitigate this relationship. This study
investigated the associations of postpartum depressive
symptoms with infants’ weight-for-length z-scores, obesity, and
overweight at 9 months of age; and whether the number of
well-child visits moderated these associations.
Methods: We used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal
Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), a nationally representative
sample of approximately 10,700 children born in the U.S. in
2001.
Results: At 9 months postpartum, 6% of the mothers were
considered severely depressed, and 18.2% either moderately
or severely depressed, on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies
Depression Scale. Approximately 15% of the infants were
obese and 29% were overweight (at or above the 95th or 85th
percentiles for weight and length, respectively). Higher
maternal depression scores were associated with lower odds of
obesity (OR=0.997, 95% CI: 0.970-0.994) and overweight
(OR=0.990, 95% CI: 0.981-0.999) among their infants, and
higher numbers of well-child-visits were associated with even
lower odds of child overweight among mothers with higher
depression scores (OR=0.996, 95% CI: 0.993-0.999).
Depressive scores had no associations with infants’ continuous
weight-for-length z-scores.
Conclusion: While the causal directions and mechanisms
remain unclear, findings suggest that well-child visits may
provide an opportunity to address mothers’ depressiv

This article particularly emphasizes the "seminal" trait of this novel. Successful prolonged resuscitation of ventricular fibrillation arrest in a patient with acute myocardial infarction
A 67-year-old man presented to the emergency department with symptoms of acute myocardial infarction. Electrocardiogram showed ST segment elevations in leads II, III, and AVF. While waiting for cardiac catheterization, he developed prolonged ventricular fi brillation lasting for 69 minutes, throughout which he was resuscitated as per the 2010 Advanced Cardiac Life Support protocol. The patient was transferred to the catheterization lab while undergoing active resuscitation, where a stent was placed in his right coronary artery. He was neurologically intact postcatheterization and discharged home on the sixth day of admission. © 2013 The Author(s)
Wood coloring by reactive stains
The appearance of interior wood products (e.g.: furniture and floors) is often the first criteria that affects customer’s interests while making a purchase. One way to diversify the colors and appearances of wood products is by using reactive stains. These coloring systems, consisting of aqueous solutions of metal salts, can penetrate wood and react with its phenolic compounds by forming metal complexes. The color of wood obtained depends on the type of phenolic compounds, type of metal salt, wood surface preparation, temperature, wood humidity, and others. In order to determine the relationship between the structural characteristics of the phenolic compounds and the color developed on wood surface, the polyphenols of two North American hardwood species were extracted and analyzed by different spectrophotometric methods and by liquid state phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The chromatic coordinates (CIELAB system) of wood colors obtained after application of reactive stains were compared for these hardwood species. A better knowledge of the reaction mechanisms and the factors influencing them, will allow the optimal use of these systems in wood finishing industries. Since the colored products are present in the wood structure, the wood grain appearance will be preserved or even be accentuated. Enhancing the natural and warm aspect of wood used in buildings interiors can contribute to the well-being of the consumers and promote furthermore the use of this biosourced material
