    Informetrics on M. N. Srinivas

    M. N. Srinivas, the well known sociologist is widely recognised as architect of modern Indian sociology and social anthropology. His publications have been analysed by year, domain, authorship pattern, channels of communication used. Keywords, etc. The results indicate that the papers published by him are of a nature that qualify him to be a 'role model' for the younger generations to emulate. By the end of 1995, Srinivas had to his credit 144 papers which, included 33 broad papers in sociology and anthropology; 18 papers in social change; 28 papers in village studies; 12 papers on religion; 17 papers on caste and 36 papers of general popular interest. The periods 1958-61 and 1974-77, when Srinivas was 38-41 and 58-61 years old. were his most productive periods with highest publication activity

    Visual impairment among weaving communities in Prakasam district in South India.

    PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence and causes of visual impairment in weaving communities in Prakasam district in South India state of Andhra Pradesh. METHODS: Using Rapid Assessment of Visual Impairment (RAVI) methodology, a population based cross-sectional study was conducted. A two-stage sampling strategy was used to select 3000 participants aged ≥40 years. Visual Acuity (VA) was assessed using a tumbling E chart and ocular examinations were performed by trained Para medical ophthalmic personnel. A questionnaire was used to collect personal and demographic information. Blindness and moderate Visual Impairment (VI) was defined as presenting VA <6/60 and <6/18 to 6/60 respectively. VI included blindness and moderate VI. RESULTS: 2848 of 3000 enumerated subjects (94.0%) participated. 39% were in 40-49 years age group and 11.8% were aged ≥70 years, 55% were women and nearly half of them had no formal education. 400 (14%; 95% CI: 12.8-15.3) subjects had VI, including blindness in 131 (4.6%; 95% CI: 3.8-5.4) and moderate VI in 269 (9.4%; 95% CI: 8.3-10.5) individuals. On applying multiple logistic regression, VI was significantly associated with older age and no formal education. Though the odds of having VI were higher in females, it was of borderline statistical significance (p = 0.06). Refractive error was the leading cause of all VI followed by cataract (56%). However, refractive errors were the leading cause of moderate VI (73.2%) and cataract was the leading cause of blindness (62.6%). 'Cannot afford the cost of services' was the leading barrier for utilization of eye care services (47%). CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant burden of VI in weaving communities in Andhra Pradesh, India most of which is avoidable. With this information as baseline, services need to be streamlined to address this burden

    High-resolution electrospray ionization (ESI) quadrupole time-of-flight and ion trap tandem mass spectrometry has been used to distinguish the positional isomers of a new class of N-blocked hybrid peptides containing repeats of the amino acids, L-Ala-γ4Caa (l)/γ4Caa(l)-L-Ala [Caa(l) = Carbo (lyxose) amino acid, derived from D-mannose]. Both MS/MS and MS3 of protonated isomeric peptides produce characteristic fragmentation involving the peptide backbone, Boc-group, and the side-chain. It is interesting to observe that the abundant yn+ ions are formed when the corresponding amide −NH does not participate in the helical structures in solution phase and relatively low abundance yn+ ions resulted when the amide −NH involves in the H-bonding. Thus, it was possible to identify the amide −NH hydrogens that participate in the helical structures through H-bonding in solution phase. Further, negative ion ESI MS/MS has also been found to be useful for differentiating these isomeric peptide acids

    Targeting cooking gas benefits in India: investigating administrative burden and policy feedbacks

    Governments today face the unenviable challenge of expanding the social safety net in ways that strengthen the social contract between the citizen and the state without undermining individual autonomy and the overall experience of democratic citizenship. All too often, the legitimate politico-administrative values that are advanced as regulatory justifications, obscure the costs imposed by the specific choices of policy instruments and implementation on policy targets. In the context of a welfare program with increasing service outputs, this research explored how the costs of onerous experiences in administrative encounters restructure the citizenship outcomes, i.e., the civic capacities and social dispositions of the policy targets. The overarching objective of this research is to understand how administrative burden shapes citizenship outcomes. In the context of the cooking gas cash transfers reform in India, this dissertation used mixed methods research to explore the originators of administrative burden, its differential impacts on policy targets, and its role in shaping policy feedbacks. The qualitative research findings identify a broad range of costs associated with administrative burden, and how they are disproportionately experienced by the disadvantaged groups among the policy targets. The field survey findings showed that low education, female gender, and rural status are predictors of administrative burden. They also found that administrative burden has a negative predictive effect on civil participation, and a positive predictive effect on political participation, activism as well as citizen disengagement. These findings are in consonance with actual citizen participatory behaviors of the case context, wherein civil society led public interest litigation has developed as a response to technocratic implementation. Importantly, the findings also show that even when there is an increase in the policy targets’ perceptions of procedural justice and policy legitimacy, administrative burden is found to be a negative predictor of positive citizenship outcomes and vice versa. The results from the embedded field survey experiment find evidence that the strategic frames that use the fiscal and inequality frames are both very effective in enhancing policy legitimacy. The findings reflect the need for foregrounding administrative burden reduction as a public value integral to effective policy implementation in democratic societies.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Srinivas Yerramsett

    Migration behaviour and estimation of colourants from coloured plastics to edible oils.

    Coloured plastics containers are increasingy used for storage and sale of edible oils; leaching of colorants into the oils may occur. Investigations were conducted on detection, identification and detemination of colorants in oils, and to assess migration of colorants from plastics containers into oils. Trials were conducted using the sandwich filter paper method, UV/Visible spectroscopy, TLC and FTIR spectroscopy. The main colorants identified and quantified were Permanent Yellow GG (CI 21100) and Permanent Orange G (CI 21110). Max concn. of colorant leached was 2 p.p.m. after 10 days in n-heptane and 30 days in decolorized coconut oil, for 5 l containers. Colorant migration was similar for different oils

    PREPARATION, ANALYSIS AND PHARMACODYNAMIC EVALUATION OF POLYMER DRUG SALTS

    This study of the chemical reaction between commercially available non-toxic acidic polymers with basic amine drugs was undertaken to study the feasibility of using the interacting products primarily as prolonged release agents, in all types of dosage forms. The mechanism of interaction between the acidic polymers and amine drug bases was studied by potentiometric and viscometric titrations of model polymers, with aliphatic and aromatic amines, and amine drug bases. The interaction products of each of the polymers, PVM/MA 169 {poly(methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride)}, PVAc-5-L (carboxylated polymer of vinyl acetate) and Acr-525 (acrylic polymer) with dextromethorphan, methapyrilene and phenylpropanolamine bases were prepared. The interaction products of PVM/MA 169 with amphetamine and methaphenilene and PVAc-5-L with methaphenilene were also prepared. Viscometric and potentiometric studies and chemical assays of interacted products showed that the acidic groups in the polymers are neutralized by the basic amine drugs to form polymer drug salts, and the neutralization process generally accounted for the total amount of drug combined to the polymers. Other processes, such as adsorption, complexation, etc., do not play the dominant role in the interaction. Drugs with more than one basic functional group tended to react incompletely with polymers containing dicarboxylic comonomer substituents. In vitro release study of the first nine salts in particulate form, were conducted using a modified U.S.P. dissolution rate method. The dissolution rate of polymer drug salts were unlike simple salts, and after a preliminary induction period, the rate could be best explained by the Higuchi equation for the release of drugs dispersed in solid matrices. The dissolution rate was dependent on the nature of the polymer as well as the drug. PVAc-5-L-dextromethorphan and Acr-525-dextromethorphan salts, in suspension form, were found to be stable to leach-out dissolution when suspended in a vehicle of neutral pH and normal storage conditions. A PVAc-5-L-dextromethorphan polymer drug salt suspension was evaluated in vivo by the histamine vapor test in guinea pigs, and produced a statistically significant duration of increased action of 5.83 hours, compared to 2.25 hours for a free drug suspension. . . .
