Heutagogy approach using trello online learning on the critical thinking skills amongst students with different learning styles
Trello online discussion has become one of the important strategies for the University Utara Malaysia Management Foundation Programme student to teach other students to think critically in conveying their ideas and become more proactive and creative in critical thinking subject. In a heutagogical approach, learners become highly autonomous and self-determined while learning online. They use Trello online discussion tool as self-determination learning. Trello enable the learners to use their capacity and capability with the goal of producing learners. Trello online learning was conducted to examine its effectiveness in enhancing macro critical thinking among active-reflective learning style. The students discuss and write their ideas in Trello. Ideas that are posted in Trello will be displayed in front of the class so that the entire learners in the class could see the given ideas. Paul's model was used to analyze learners' critical thinking in Trello online discussion
Operationalizing computerized testing in mathematics competition
This chapter seeks to take a modest and yet formative approach in proposing computer-based test (CBT) as the inevitable next wave in digital assessment. The major section reports on the practical design of developing and administering CBT in a mathematics competition by HOTS educational innovation development (HEID) in a mathematics competition. This chapter describes the CBT developmental process undertaken by HEID, which focuses on constructing multiple-choice test items, administering CBT, and scoring the test. While CBT offers the possibility of improving assessment, the process of preparing items and conducting online competition have nevertheless encountered several challenges such as getting quality test items, school and teacher readiness, seat time in front of computer, computer compatibility, and internet speed. As with many other educational reforms at infancy, more research in the area of implementing CBT to facilitate international competitions is needed in landscaping the assessment platform of Education 4.0
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Penghijrahan buruh India ke Pulau Pinang: Kajian mengenai corak migrasi dan pengaruh sosio-ekonomi sebelum tahun 1930 Indian labour migration to Penang: Study on the patterns of migration and socio-economic impact before the year 1930
The arrival of Indian laborers to Penang occurs rapidly during the British occupation. Many Indian workers were brought in by 1820s. The economic and social crisis in India have affected the demographics of Penang following the arrival of Indian labor in 19th century. Penang as Straits Settlements state was a well-known port in Southeast Asia. Labor from India was used by the British to develop the plantations of rubber, oil and transportation. There are various aspects that affect the lifestyle of Indian labor, such as politics, cultural belief, economic and social. However, this study focuses on the inclusion of Indian labor and migration patterns after the opening of Penang and social influences such as the caste system, economic activities such as plantation workesrs in the plantation sector which is practiced in India for Indian workers living in Penang. In addition to the caste problem, this study also explained injustice zamindar against
the Indian labor. Reference for this article consists of oral sources, documents, manuscipt and books. The findings of this study show that
before 1930, the influence of social (caste system) and employment practices in India still has an influence on Indian workers in Penang.
The scope of this study includes the social impact of the caste system and the economy as well as Indian labor migration patterns involving agents working under the system of “indenture”and “kangani”. In conclusion, this article describes the social and economic impact from India against Indian in Penang before 1930
The effectiveness of RA approach on rat among primary school students
Reading is one of the main literacy skills for second or foreign language learners to obtain knowledge. However one must not only be able to read, but one must also have good reading habits.Educators are confronted with a constant struggle to motivate students to learn in all content areas, including reading. This study concentrates on an investigation of the effects of
reading aloud on students‟ reading performance particularly in English context.Acknowledging
the importance of reading, this paper attempts to demonstrate that effect of Reading Aloud approach on students Reading Attitude (RA-RAT) is a viable method to improve students‟ English reading habits at initial stage. This study examined 80 Year 5 students‟ reading preferences and their responses towards the program as two criteria.A posttest: School Based Oral Assessment (SBOA), questionnaire, observation and interview were used for collecting data. The results indicated that there is effectiveness of reading aloud approach on the overall students‟ reading achievement, students‟ reading ability, as well as students‟
attitude towards reading aloud approach. The finding also shows there is significant difference in overall reading performance between male students in the experimental group who had participated in a reading aloud activity as compared to male students in the control grou
