    Effect of Binarity in Star Cluster Dynamical Mass Determination

    In this paper we explore the effects that the presence of a fraction of binary stars has in the determination of a star cluster mass via the virial theorem. To reach this aim in an accurate and consistent way, we run a set of simulations using the direct summation, high precision, code NBODY7. By means of this suite of simulations we are able to quantify the overestimate of open-star-cluster-like models' dynamical masses when making a straight application of the virial theorem using available position and radial velocity measurements. The mass inflation caused by the binary "heating"contribution to the measured velocity dispersion depends, of course, on the initial binary fraction, f b0 and its following dynamical evolution. For an f b (evolved up to 1.5 Gyr) in the range 8%-42% the overestimate of the mass done using experimentally sounding estimates for the velocity dispersion can be up to a factor of 45. We provide a useful fitting formula to correct the dynamical mass determination for the presence of binaries, and underline how neglecting the role of binaries in stellar systems might lead to erroneous conclusions about their total mass budget. If this trend remains valid for larger systems like dwarf spheroidal galaxies, which are still far out of reach for high-precision dynamical simulations taking their binaries into account, it would imply an incorrect overestimation of their dark matter content, as inferred by means of available velocity dispersion measurements

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Dynamics of binary black holes in young star clusters: the impact of cluster mass and long-term evolution

    Dynamical interactions in dense star clusters are considered one of the most effective formation channels of binary black holes (BBHs). Here, we present direct N-body simulations of two different star cluster families: low-mass (∼500–800 M∘) and relatively high-mass star clusters (≥5000 M∘). We show that the formation channels of BBHs in low- and high-mass star clusters are extremely different and lead to two completely distinct populations of BBH mergers. Low-mass clusters host mainly low-mass BBHs born from binary evolution, while BBHs in high-mass clusters are relatively massive (chirp mass up to ∼100 M∘) and driven by dynamical exchanges. Tidal disruption dramatically quenches the formation and dynamical evolution of BBHs in low-mass clusters on a very short time-scale (≲100 Myr), while BBHs in high-mass clusters undergo effective dynamical hardening until the end of our simulations (1.5 Gyr). In high-mass clusters, we find that 8 per cent of BBHs have primary mass in the pair-instability mass gap at metallicity Z = 0.002, all of them born via stellar collisions, while only one BBH with primary mass in the mass gap forms in low-mass clusters. These differences are crucial for the interpretation of the formation channels of gravitational-wave sources

    Compact object mergers in hierarchical triples from low-mass young star clusters

    A binary star orbited by an outer companion constitutes a hierarchical triple system. The outer body may excite the eccentricity of the inner binary through the von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai (ZLK) mechanism, triggering the gra vitational wa ve (GW) coalescence of the inner binary when its members are compact objects. Here, we study a sample of hierarchical triples with an inner black hole (BH) -BH binary, BH -neutron star (NS) binary, and BH -white dwarf (WD) binary, formed via dynamical interactions in low-mass young star clusters. Our sample of triples was obtained self-consistently from direct N -body simulations of star clusters, which included up-to-date stellar evolution. We find that the inner binaries in our triples cannot merge via GW radiation alone, and the ZLK mechanism is essential to trigger their coalescence. Contrary to binaries assembled dynamically in young star clusters, binary BHs merging in triples have preferentially low-mass ratios ( q 0.3) and higher primary masses ( m p 40 M ⊙). We derive a local merger rate density of 0.60, 0.11, and 0 . 5 yr -1 Gpc -3 for BH-BH, BH-NS, and BH-WD binaries, respectively . Additionally , we find that merging binaries have high eccentricities across the GW spectrum, including the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK), LISA, and DECIGO frequencies. About 7 per cent of BH-BH and 60 per cent of BH-NS binaries will have detectable eccentricities in the LVK band. Our results indicate that the eccentricity and the mass spectrum of merging binaries are the strongest features for the identification of GW mergers from triples

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
