Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Experimental study of biotic and abiotic corrosion on iron nanofilms : initiation-propagation, wetting and corrosion products.
La corrosion du fer est principalement un phénomène de surface; en particulier son initiation met en jeu la couche interfaciale d'oxydes native du fer ainsi que les premières couches d'atomes à l'état métallique sous-jacente. Cette étude se focalise sur les phénomènes de surface lors de la corrosion de nanocouches (10 nm) de fer, déposées sur substrat de verre, avec une nanocouche d'accroche de 5 nm de titane. Ces nanocouches présentent l'intérêt de former une surface sans défauts et de limiter l'accumulation de produits de corrosion à la surface. Sous une goutte aérée de solution aqueuse contenant des ions chlorures, la corrosion est initiée localement et se propage de façon radiale autour de la piqûre sous forme d'un front de corrosion 2D. Lorsque ce front de corrosion atteint la ligne triple de la goutte, il la déforme et entraîne l'étalement de cette dernière sur la surface ainsi corrodée. La faible quantité de matière en fer corrodé permet l'analyse à l'échelle nanométrique des produits de corrosion. Les analyses physico-chimiques de la surface et de la phase aqueuse montrent alors que les produits de corrosion sont majoritairement composés d'oxy-hydroxydes de fer (III), qui ont crû sous forme de feuillets de lépidocrocite à la surface de la nanocouche de titane et en suspension dans la goutte. Dans le cas de la corrosion induite par bactéries (ou MIC), plus particulièrement par la bactérie Shewanella Oneidensis MR1, la quantité de dioxygène accessible est diminuée par la respiration cellulaire. On retrouve alors à la surface des coprécipités d'oxydes de fer et de phosphates présents dans le milieu de culture. En limitant la diffusion des gaz de façon expérimentale, on peut observer la formation de dihydrogène lors de la corrosion du nanofilm de fer dans ces conditions biotiques, produit témoin de l'implication de l'eau dans les réactions d'oxydation du fer, qui ont lieu à plus bas potentiel électrochimique. Enfin, une étude préliminaire a permis de mettre en évidence l'apparition de structures dendritiques lors de la corrosion du nanofilm de fer-titane sous une goutte d'eau salée (sans bactéries). Ces structures, aux propriétés optiques bien particulières, semblent se former à l'interface entre la couche de titane et celle d'oxy-hydroxydes de fer, et être composées de fer oxydé et métallique.Iron corrosion is mostly a surface phenomenon; its initiation involving the interfacial iron oxide layer and the underlying metallic iron atoms layers. This study emphasizes surface phenomena associated with the corrosion of iron nanolayers (10nm), which are deposited on glass substrates thanks to a 5-nm titanium adhesion layer. These nanolayers offer a defect-free surface in addition to the advantage of limiting corrosion products accumulation on the surface. Under an aerated aqueous, chloride ions-containing droplet, corrosion initiates locally by aggressive ions but propagates radially around the pit as a 2D corrosion front. As soon as this front reaches the triple contact line, it deforms it and slowly drives the droplet wetting of the corroded surface. The weak amount of substance of corroded iron allows any corrosion product nano-scale analysis. Physico-chemical analysis performed on both surface and solution show that corrosion products are mainly iron (III) oxo-hydroxides, that grew as lepidocrocite sheets on the titanium nanolayer and in suspension. In the case of microbially induced corrosion (MIC), more specifically iron nanolayers corrosion initiated by Shewanella Oneidensis MR1 bacterium, oxygen quantities are diminished because of cellular respiration. In such conditions, we can find on the surface iron oxides that co-precipitated with phosphates from the culture medium. By experimentally limiting gas diffusion, hydrogen formation may be detected from iron nanolayers biotic corrosion, witness of water's involvement in iron oxidation reactions that occur at lower electrochemical potentials. Finally, a preliminary study has revealed the appearance of dendritic structures during the corrosion of iron-titanium nanolayers under a drop of salt containing water (without bacteria). These structures, with notable optical properties, form at the titanium-iron oxy-hydroxides interface, and are composed of both metallic and oxidized iron

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
