Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956), German playwright and director, devoted his entire oeuvre to critical thinking and exploring the workings of social processes. His commitment to the political and cultural issues of his time - such as the advance of Nazi-fascism, his life in exile, and his criticism of capitalism –, as well as the theoretical formulation of a new form of theatrical production that opposes the bourgeois, hegemonic and market theater, find concreteness in his artistic practice, collectively realized in the work of the Berliner Ensemble, a theater group created by him and Helene Weigel in September 1949. It was his involvement with social issues that led him to develop a new way of making theater and to radicalize and refunctionalize the device. Prevalence of Concurrent Hearing and Visual Impairment in US Adults: The National Health Interview Survey, 1997–2002
Analysis of data from a nationally representative sample of US adults (n=195801) showed that concurrent hearing and visual impairment prevalence rates were highest for participants older than 79 years of age (16.6%); a 3-fold increase in age-adjusted rates of reported hearing and visual impairment was observed for Native Americans compared with Asian Americans. Research on preventing concurrent hearing and visual impairment and countering its consequences is warranted, especially in population subgroups, such as Native and older Americans

Analisis Normatif Kedudukan Undang-Undang Dasar Negara Republik Indonesia Tahun 1945 Dalam Jenis Dan Hierarki Peraturan Perundang-Undangan
Nomor 12 Tahun 2011 tentang Pembentukan Peraturan Perundang-Undangan,
letak
sebelumnya menurut pendapat Prof. A. Hamid S. Attamimi maupun Prof. Maria
Undang-Undang (
formell gesetz) ke bawah. Sedangkan kedudukan
Staatsfundamentalnorm dan
Staatsgrundgesetz dalam Teori norma hukum
berjenjang berada diatas
formell gesetz (Undang-Undang). Pasal 7 ayat (1) UU
No. 12 Tahun 2011 menyebutkan jenis dan hierarki peraturan perundang-
undangan sehingga menimbulkan adanya ketidakpastian hukum berdasarkan teori
norma hukum berjenjang
Peraturan Perundang-Undangan dibawah Undang-Undang Dasar Negara Republik
Indonesia Tahun 1945. Sehingga, baik bentuk
Staatsfundamentalnorm maupun
perundang-undangan, dilain sisi keduanya pun memiliki tingkat hierarki norma
yang berbeda oleh karena itu, memasukan bentuk
Staatsfundamentalnorm
maupun
tepat sehingga perlu dilakukan peninjauan ulang. Selain itu apabila melihat konsep
Hak Uji Materiil, apabila bentuk
hak menguji formiil (
formale toetsingrecht), maupun hak menguji materiil
(
materiele toetsingrecht). Sedangkan
Staatsgrundgesetz merupakan norma
tunggal dan mendasar dan pada
Staatsfundamentalnorm hak menguji tidak dapat
dilaksanakan karena
Staatsfundamentalnorm merupakan norma tertinggi atau
norma dasar. Sehingga kedudukan hierarki norma dalam Pasal 7 ayat (1) UU No.
12 Tahun 2011 perlu dilakukan peninjauan ulang dengan melakukan pemisahan
kedudukan sesuai tingkatan norma yang ad
Evaluation of antioxidant and anticancer effects of Piper betle L (Piperaceae) leaf extract on MCF-7 cells, and preparation of transdermal patches of the extract
Purpose: To determine the antioxidant and anticancer effects of Piper betle (P. betle) leaf extract on human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, and to develop transdermal patches containing the extract.
Methods: The leaf extract of P. betle was prepared by maceration method, and its antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Cytotoxicity and suppression of cell migration (indices of anticancer activity) were also assessed in MCF-7 cells by sulforhodamine B (SRB) and wound healing assays, respectively. Transdermal patches were developed using the casting method, and the resultant patches were evaluated with regard to their physical appearance and mechanical properties before and after a stability test.
Results: The extract exhibited antioxidant activity with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 30.0 ± 0.1 µg/mL. It also showed cytotoxicity with an IC50 of 114.3 ± 14.9 µg/mL, and significantly suppressed the migration of MCF-7 cells at a dose of 25 µg/mL. Based on desirable characteristics, patch base formulations containing 4.2 % pectin, 0.4 % hydroxyl propyl methylcellulose (HPMC), 0.4 % polyvinyl pyrrolidine K-90 (PVP-K90) and 3 % propylene glycol (PG) were selected for incorporation into the extract.
Conclusion: Leaf extract of P. betle exhibits potential anti-breast cancer properties. A transdermal patch containing 0.03 % of the extract can be successfully developed for treatment of breast cancer

Punicalagin alleviates brain injury and inflammatory responses, and regulates HO-1/Nrf-2/ARE signaling in rats after experimental intracerebral haemorrhage
Purpose: To investigate the effect of punicalagin, an ellagitannin present in pomegranates, on intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH)-induced inflammatory responses and oxidative stress, and also unravel the underlying mechanism(s) of action.
Methods: Collagenase type IV (0.2 U) was used to induce ICH in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Punicalagin was given to the rats at doses of 25, 50, and 75 mg/kg body weight via oral gavage for 15 days before ICH induction. The animals were sacrificed 24h following induction of ICH, and their brains were excised immediately and used for analysis. Histological changes were determined with Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining. Permeability to blood-brain barrier (BBB) was determined by quantifying the extent of extravasation of Evan Blue (EB). Protein expressions of HO-1/Nrf-2/ARE and NF-κB signaling were assayed using immunoblotting and RT-PCR. Levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and serum levels of cytokines were also determined.
Results: Punicalagin treatment reduced inflammatory cell infiltration and cell damage, improved brain tissue architecture and BBB integrity. The punicalagin treatment increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes, and enhanced antioxidant status via activation of Nrf-2/ARE/HO-1 signaling pathway (p < 0.05). The treatment upregulated the expressions of HO-1 to 174 %, relative to 127 % in ICH control rats. Furthermore, it enhanced NF-κB levels and reversed the ICH injury-induced upregulations of IL-6, IL-18 and IL-1β.
Conclusion: These findings indicate that punicalagin exerts neuroprotective effect in rats after experimental ICH through regulation of theHO-1/Nrf-2/ARE signaling pathway. Thus, punicalagin has therapeutic potential for ICH.
