The observation of this rich conformational behavior is in accordance with the recent observation of seven conformers for dopaminea, J.~C.~Lopez, J.~L.~Alonso \textit{J. Phys. Chem. Lett.} \textbf{2013}, \textit{4}, 486.} and in sharp contrast with the conformational reduction proposed for catecholamines. \textbf{2010}, \textit{1}, 1130.

Several conformers (up to six for serine, cysteine, and aspartic acid and five for γ\gamma-aminobutyric acid) have been detected in the jet-cooled rotational spectrum and their rotational and 14^{14}N-nuclear quadrupole coupling constants determined; the latter are crucial to distinguish unequivocally between conformations with similar rotational constants. The observed conformers present different intramolecular hydrogen bonds involving the --COOH, --NH2_2, --OH and --SH groups which influence their stability. The complex is stabilized by two intermolecular hydrogen bonds formed between the carbonyl group and one of the hydrogen atoms of water (Ow--H\cdotsO=C) and between the hydroxyl group and the electron lone pair at the oxygen atom of water (Ow\cdotsH--O--C))

Two recent papers, based on millimeter-wave investigations, reported the vibrational spacings among the four lowest pseudorotation states of normal THF, and obtained contrastant results on the potential energy function: four equivalent minima}, or 2 sets of two equivalent minima}. In order to have more information on this problem, we planned to investigate the millimeter wave spectrum of the d8d_{8} species. We obtained a vibrational spacing of caca 15 GHz between the two lowest pseudorotation states: a result which is not in agreement with both the above mentioned potential energy functions

Eccentricity and Vulnerability: Helmuth Plessner’s Philosophical and Political Anthropology

    No full text
This text is a written and extended version of the lecture I gave on 7 November 2017 at the First Spanish-Serbian Workshop on Philosophy and Social Theory, ‘Engaging Vulnerability and Exclusion. Rethinking the Subject in the 21st Century’. On that occasion, I focused on Helmuth Plessner’s conception of the individual and underlined the connection between the notions of ‘eccentricity’ and ‘vulnerability’ from that point of view. The present version also explores at the very end that same connection from the perspective of relations between nations and peoples as it is thematized by Plessner himself in the last chapter of his 1931 book Macht und menschliche Natur. In this way, I try to contribute to the revitalization of the reception of Plessner’s philosophical and political anthropology, which I have been working on during recent years, as well as to reclaim the importance of the so-called ‘continental philosophy’ with regard to the discourse on the vulnerability issue. This chapter will focus on "Macht und menschliche Natur", Plessner’s last book of the Weimar period, published just two years before the collapse of the Republic and the content of which is related to another two major figures of German intellectuality during this epoch of upheaval: the author of "Sein und Zeit", Martin Heidegger, and Carl Schmitt. I will examine the affinities and discrepancies which may be found between Schmitt and Plessner regarding the meaning which the conceptual pair friend-enemy acquires according to both authors. Schmitt understood it as the difference which determines human groupings, whereas Plessner comprehended it as a relation which does not institute identity and has not only to do with groups, but also with individuals.Depto. de Filosofía y SociedadFac. de FilosofíaFALSEpu

Meconium staining of the skin and meconium aspiration in porcine intrapartum stillbirths

    No full text
Rates and severity of meconium staining on skin and mcconium aspiration into the respiratory tract of porcine intrapartum stillbirths were determined in an intensively managed farm. Heartbeats, inspiratory efforts and umbilical cord morphology were evaluated at birth. The lungs of all intrapartum stillborn piglets were grossly examined and microscopically evaluated for the presence of ammotic fluid cells, meconium and inflammatory cells. Thirty four percent of the intrapartum stillbirths had ruptured umbilical cords. Heartbeats and inspiratory efforts were rarely detectable. All intrapartum stillbirths (100%) were stained with meconium, and 60% had meconium grossly visible in the oropharynx and 40% in trachea and bronchi. Microscopically, 72% of the lungs contained meconium. The most common site where meconium was found was the bronchi (66%) followed by bronchioles (48%), and alveoli (34%). There was no microscopic evidence of inflammation in lungs with meconium aspiration. No significant association was found between the severity of skin staining and the degree of meconium aspiration. It was concluded that meconium staining is consistently present in intrapartum stillbirths suggesting that severe hypoxia takes place during parturition. However, meconium staining appears to be a poor predictor for intrapartum aspiration in stillbirth piglets. These findings also suggest that intrapartum death due to asphyxia occurs rapidly thus providing insufficient time in the stillborn to mount a typical inflammatory response in the lung.
