Le mani di Jacek Woszczerowicz, attore “di composizione” [An actor of composition. Jacek Woszczerowicz's hands]

    No full text
"The article aims to draw attention back to the art of Jacek Woszczerowicz, once a well-known and beloved Polish actor. It focuses on his peculiar acting style by analyzing two adaptations of stage dramas and a documentary of a theatrical masterpiece Richard III (1960). In particular, the author highlights Woszczerowicz’s work on gesture and the role played by hands in building characters. This brief survey will lead us to re-discover the deep process of cognition and experience realized dramatically by the artist and to understand why Jan Kott considered him “the first contemporary Shakespeare”, while Jerzy Grotowski praised him as the greatest “actor of composition”.

Increased production of cytokines and growth factors by aortic allografts: A possible explanation for myointimal hyperplasia formation

    No full text
Accelerated myointimal hyperplasia is a major complication of arterial allografts. The aim of our study was to analyze the role of growth factors in the genesis of myointimal hyperplasia in arterial allografts. Two groups of experiments were performed: Isografts and Allografts. The Isograft group consisted of 18 inbred Lewis rats in which a 1-cm long segment of aorta was inserted as abdominal aortic interposition graft. The aortic segments were obtained from syngeneic Lewis rats. The Allograft group consisted of 18 inbred Lewis rats, in which a 1-cm long segment of aorta was interposed at the level of the abdominal aorta. The aortic segments were obtained from allogeneic Brown-Norway rats. No immunosuppression was used. The animals were sacrificed 4 weeks after surgery and the aortic grafts were analyzed by light, electron microscopy (n = 3 for each group) and immunohistochemistry (n = 3 for each group). In addition, aortic segments (n = 12 for each group) were put in an organ culture to assess production of growth factors. All allografts showed evidence of severe myointimal hyperplasia, which was minimal in isografts. PDGF, bFGF and TGF-β1 production, generally considered to be the cause of myointimal hyperplasia, was not increased in allografts, whereas IL-1, TNF-α and GM-CSF production was increased in allografts and probably lymphocytes were the source of these cytokines (p < 0.001). We conclude that myointimal hyperplasia in aortic allografts is associated with an increase of IL-1, TNF-α and GM-CSF produced by lymphocytes

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

On the Optical Concentration Achievable by a Non-imaging Microprism Array Combined to an Image Photodetector

An array of non-imaging micro-prisms can offer a substantial recovery of the sensitivity loss due to area fill-factor in photodetectors. This is especially true for device in which complex circuit functions are required, that consume a large fraction of pixel area, like e.g., CMOS sensors, image rengefinders, SPAD arrays, fluorescence analysers, etc. In this paper, after a general introduction, we evaluate the achievable concentration at asymptotically low NA (input/output area ratio) and high NA (inverse square of the input NA). Then, we present the results of a ray-tracing method for the fast and efficient calculation of the optical parameters of several types of prism concentrators, i.e., truncated cone, parabolic and compound parabolic, both reflective and refractive. Parameters considered are: power efficiency, effective concentration, channel crosstalk and power penalty for output gap

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
