Older women in local parties: marginalised or empowered?
The subject of older women in politics has rarely been investigated and very little is thus known about their motivation to be active in party membership. Vicky Randall’s interview-based study in seven English parliamentary constituencies sheds some light on the matter. Randall finds a mixed picture, showing that older women give a substantial contribution to the party, not least through fundraising activities, while facing a number of obstacles in making their voice heard. At the same time, however, political life benefits senior women by allowing them to claim an active role in society
Games as subject-matter for learning in primary physical education
This is an accepted manuscript of a chapter published by Routledge in An Introduction to Primary Physical Education edited by Gerald Griggs, Vicky Randall on 08/02/2022, available online at: https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003257783 The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.Games has been one of the cornerstones of Physical Education teaching since its earliest inclusion in the school timetable. However, it is an area that is inherently complex and such has often been delivered poorly or without real clarity of purpose. These issues are tackled head on in this chapter. To support the practitioner in creating intelligible competitive games that match players’ skilfulness and maturity, the chapter deconstructs sporting forms of games into games as subject-matter for learning. Subject-matter for learning focuses attention on the learning experiences that can be developed through playing games. This includes examining the tactical problems competitive games pose, solutions to these tactical problems and the associated skilfulness needed to enact these solutions. These game constructs are employed to utilise this understanding to permit more explicit understanding of ways to develop technical competence and decision-making within game play.Published onlin

Bayesian mixture estimation for perceptual grouping
Perceptual grouping is the process by which a set of image elements is divided into distinct “objects” or components. In this dissertation I propose a Bayesian framework for understanding perceptual grouping, in which the goal of the computation is to estimate the organization that best explains the observed configuration of image elements. I formalize the problem of perceptual grouping as a mixture estimation problem, where it is assumed that the configuration of elements is generated by a set of distinct components (or ”objects”), whose underlying parameters one seeks to estimate. In the first part of this dissertation I will propose a simplified version of the framework and show how it can be used to estimate the number of objects, more specifically clusters of dots, present in the image. Across two experiments I show how the model gives an accurate and quantitatively precise account of subjects’ numerosity judgments, while at the same time outperforming more standard accounts for dot clustering. In the second part of the dissertation this simplified framework is expanded to estimate a hierarchical representation of the image elements. This framework can easily be adjusted to different subproblems of perceptual grouping. Here I will show how an instantiation of our framework for contour integration, part decomposition, and shape completion can account for several key perceptual phenomena and previously collected human subject data.Ph.
