Second Language Acquisition Programs: An Assessment of the Bilingual Education Debate
No full textSecond language acquisition programs are frequently misunderstood, as various programs are often mistakenly labeled as bilingual education. Inaccurate labeling creates confusion and fuels the already heated bilingual education debate. The purpose of this research is to clearly define different second language acquisition programs, assess major arguments on opposing sides of this nationwide debate, and discuss program evaluations from the 1991 Ramirez investigation and the Rossell and Baker study (1996). In so doing, important issues regarding the world of second language acquisition programs will surface. Expectantly, this research will generate, or continue, further discussion addressing these concerns in an effort to ameliorate the confusion surrounding second language acquisition programs

A sua estrutura está organizada em três partes: no capítulo 1, trata das origens familiares e dos primeiros contatos de Cruz e Sousa com a cultura dominante no seu tempo; no capítulo 2, aborda os anos de formação político-intelectual do escritor; por último, no capítulo 3, reconstrói a militância abolicionista de Cruz e Sousa em Desterro e reflete sobre as relações entre produção intelectual e engajamento político na experiência de escritores negros no Brasil do final do século XIX
Analysis of ecosystem services provision in the Colombian Amazon using participatory research and mapping techniques
No full textOver the last two decades indigenous peoples in the lower Caquetá River basin in Colombia have experienced detrimental changes in the provision of important ecosystem services in ways that have significant implications for the maintenance of their traditional livelihoods. To assess these changes we conducted eight participatory mapping activities and convened 22 focus group discussions. We focused the analysis on two types of change: (1) changes in the location of ecosystem services provisioning areas and (2) changes in the stock of ecosystem services. The focal ecosystem services include services such as provision of food, raw materials and medicinal resources. Results from the study show that in the past two decades the demand for food and raw materials has intensified and, as a result, locations of provisioning areas and the stocks of ecosystem services have changed. We found anecdotal evidence that these changes correlate well with socio-economic factors such as greater need for income generation, change in livelihood practices and consumption patterns. We discuss the use of participatory mapping techniques in the context of marginalized and data-poor regions. We also show how this kind of information can strengthen existing ecosystem-based management strategies used by indigenous peoples in the Colombian Amazon

No full textComunicación presentada en el V Congreso Internacional de Videojuegos y Educación (CIVE'17) celebrado en Puerto de la Cruz (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) del 7 al 9 de junio de 2017.La comunicación, enmarcada en la investigación de una Tesis Doctoral, justifica la integración del videojuego en la cultura del siglo XXI y denota elementos inherentes a la Educación en la Sociedad del Conocimiento: fin pedagógico de las Alfabetizaciones Múltiples hacia la ciudadanía, entornos de enseñanza y aprendizaje, medios didácticos, y roles de docentes y discentes. Se indica que las competencias específicas de información, comunicación e imagen que se exigen en un nuevo paradigma social y digital de conectividad, materializadas en el marco teórico de la new media literacy, se relacionan con los principios de aprendizaje presentes en videojuegos y con las necesidades académicas de la sociedad del conocimiento conceptualizadas entorno al modelo de la metaliteracy. De la Multialfabetización, se presentan los carices acerca de la creación de significados, la evaluación crítica de contextos, los medios de comunicación, las experiencias de socialización cultural y los sistemas democráticos. Se delimita el concepto de Gaming y se propone la utilización de videojuegos como Medio Didáctico para las Alfabetizaciones Múltiples. Una muestra de experiencias de Gaming sirve, finalmente, para justificar la consecución de las dimensiones de las Alfabetizaciones Múltiples (instrumental, cognitiva, comunicativa, axiológica y emocional) a través del videojuego

No full textTato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat provozní neefektivity v rostoucím řetězci restaurací, přičemž jako předmět zkoumání je analyzována společnost Cruz Group za účelem zlepšení jejích procesů a zvýšení provozní efektivity. Teoretický základ studie se zaměřuje na provoz restaurací a běžné problémy začínajících podniků. Definuje použití metodologických rámců DMAIC, SIPOC, Pareto, Lean a Six Sigma. Metodologie DMAIC je aplikována na vybraný proces v restauraci s jeho příslušnou definicí pro analýzu. Data shromážděná z reálného provozu restaurace poskytují přehled o neefektivitách podniku. Nástroje jsou využity k vylepšení pracovních postupů, optimalizaci alokace zdrojů a zvýšení spokojenosti zákazníků. Doporučení zahrnují zavedení lean nástroje Mieruka (vizuální management) za účelem zlepšení parametrů CTQ (kritických pro kvalitu). Nakonec je navržen kontrolní systém pro dosažení trvalých a úspěšných výsledků.This bachelor’s thesis aims to explore operational inefficiencies in a growing restaurant chain, analyzing Cruz Group as a subject to improve its processes and enhance operational efficiency. The study's theoretical background focuses on restaurant operations and common problems as a start-up. It defines the use methodology frameworks DMAIC, SIPOC, Pareto, Lean, and Six Sigma. DMAIC is applied to the selected process of a restaurant with its proper definition for analysis. Data collected from real-time restaurant operations provide insights into the restaurant’s inefficiencies. Tools are used to improve workflows, optimize resource allocation, and improve customer satisfaction. Recommendations include adopting the lean tool (Mieruka) visual management to enhance critical-to-quality (CTQ) parameters. Ultimately, a control system is provided to have continuous and successful results
