Analysis of ecosystem services provision in the Colombian Amazon using participatory research and mapping techniques

    No full text
Over the last two decades indigenous peoples in the lower Caquetá River basin in Colombia have experienced detrimental changes in the provision of important ecosystem services in ways that have significant implications for the maintenance of their traditional livelihoods. To assess these changes we conducted eight participatory mapping activities and convened 22 focus group discussions. We focused the analysis on two types of change: (1) changes in the location of ecosystem services provisioning areas and (2) changes in the stock of ecosystem services. The focal ecosystem services include services such as provision of food, raw materials and medicinal resources. Results from the study show that in the past two decades the demand for food and raw materials has intensified and, as a result, locations of provisioning areas and the stocks of ecosystem services have changed. We found anecdotal evidence that these changes correlate well with socio-economic factors such as greater need for income generation, change in livelihood practices and consumption patterns. We discuss the use of participatory mapping techniques in the context of marginalized and data-poor regions. We also show how this kind of information can strengthen existing ecosystem-based management strategies used by indigenous peoples in the Colombian Amazon

Among the papers of politicians who have held a top position in the government of republican Italy, Mario Scelba’s archive, a christian democrat and minister of the Interior from 1947 to 1955 and from 1960 to 1962, is one with the richest relevant information about politics and the various italian events during the “cold war”. His records have been donated to the Foundation Istituto Luigi Sturzo in Rome, where they have been emptied into two different transfers: the former consisting of 197 bundles, the latter of just 29 bundles, which however represent the more meaningful section of the fonds, as they gather the remnants of a huge amount of files either of political or of personal nature, partly originating from his own secretariats at the Ministry of the Interior and at the Cabinet (actually he also was prime minister in 1954-1955), partly organized later on by Scelba himself at his deputy’s office. By means of a thorough examination of the covers of the files, the author has tried to see into the real nature – public and/or private – of certain dossiers. Such perusal of Scelba’s papers and the study of dated archival reference codes allows the tracing of partial lists of past files, now missing

Harnessing Web 3.0 and R to mitigate simulation validation restrictions

    No full text
The complexity of modern systems has made the use of simulations paramount, in order to test different scenarios in an affordable, ethical, and risk-free way. As such, simulations need to be validated, ensuring that the obtained results are meaningful. But validation apart from the computational difficulties, bears several other problems. The constant need for validation due to updates on the simulation software, the dependence on the validation experts to be always available for the new iterations and for presenting any new insights are just some of these problems. This paper proposes a framework, and applies it to two case studies, which is based on Web 3.0 technologies and the R statistical language as a mean to mitigate such problems.Organisation & GovernancePolicy Analysi

Geographic profiling in Nazi Berlin: fact and fiction

    No full text
Geographic profiling uses the locations of connected crime sites to make inferences about the probable location of the offender’s ‘anchor point’ (usually a home, but sometimes a workplace). We show how the basic ideas of the method were used in a Gestapo investigation that formed the basis of a classic German novel about domestic resistance to the Nazis during the Second World War. We use modern techniques to re-analyse this case, and show that these successfully locate the Berlin home address of Otto and Elise Hampel, who had distributed hundreds of anti-Nazi postcards, after analysing just 34 of the 214 incidents that took place before their arrest. Our study provides the first empirical evidence to support the suggestion that analysis of minor terrorism-related acts such as graffiti and theft could be used to help locate terrorist bases before more serious incidents occur

Ahead of others in the authorship order: names with middle initials appear earlier in author lists of academic articles in psychology

    No full text
Middle name initials are often used by people in contexts where intellectual performance matters. Given this association, middle initials in people’s names indicate intellectual capacity and performance (Van Tilburg and Igou, 2014). In the current research, we examined whether middle initials are associated with a typical academic indicator of intellectual performance: authorship order of journal articles. In psychology, authorship early in the author list of an article should correspond with greater contribution to this intellectual endeavor compared to authorship appearing later in the author list. Given that middle initials indicate intellectual capacity and performance, we investigated whether there would be a positive relationship between middle initials in author names and early (vs. late) appearance of names in author lists of academic journal articles in psychology. In two studies, we examined the relationship between amount of authors’ middle initials and authorship order. Study 1 used a sample of 678 articles from social psychology journals published in the years 2006 and 2007. Study 2 used a sample of 696 articles from journals of multiple sub-disciplines in psychology published in the years from 1970 to 2013. Middle initials in author names were overrepresented early (vs. late) in author lists. We discuss implications of our findings for academic decisions on authorship orders, potential avenues of further investigation, and applications

Design and Implementation of an Organizational Project Management Maturity Development Plan for Altea Farmacéutica S.A

    No full text
Altea FarmaceuticaMagíster en Gerencia Organizacional de ProyectosMaestríaThe current discourse on Organizational Project Management (OPM) has evolved into an integrative approach that links the management of projects, programs, and portfolios with key dimensions such as governance, organizational culture, and corporate structure. This perspective is particularly relevant in highly regulated sectors like the pharmaceutical industry, where greater systematization is required to achieve higher levels of organizational maturity. In this context, the present research aimed to design an organizational maturity development plan in project management for Altea Farmacéutica S.A., using a proprietary model called OPMx, structured into seven dimensions aligned with the organizational layers proposed by Müller et al. (2019). A sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach was applied, integrating semi-structured interviews, document verification, a questionnaire segmented by hierarchical levels, and focus groups. This combination enabled the identification of a “structured” maturity level, with strengths in governance and operational processes and weaknesses in organizational culture, leadership, and project management technologies. The methodological triangulation allowed for diagnosing significant asymmetries across hierarchical levels and detecting improvement opportunities for the institutionalization of a project-oriented approach. As a response, the Organizational Project Management Maturity Program (PROMOGP) was designed, composed of six structural projects aimed at strengthening the PMO, standardizing methodologies, integrating technological tools, and promoting a project-based organizational culture with distributed leadership. This program was articulated through a roadmap with defined deliverables, expected benefits, and alignment with the corporate Balanced Scorecard. Ultimately, this research proposes a replicable diagnostic and planning model for organizations in the pharmaceutical sector, recommending its validation in other regulated environments and the exploration of hybrid frameworks that combine predictive and agile approaches adapted to the regulatory demands of the industry

EuroCity persons: A novel benchmark for person detection in traffic scenes

    No full text
Big data has had a great share in the success of deep learning in computer vision. Recent works suggest that there is significant further potential to increase object detection performance by utilizing even bigger datasets. In this paper, we introduce the EuroCity Persons dataset, which provides a large number of highly diverse, accurate and detailed annotations of pedestrians, cyclists and other riders in urban traffic scenes. The images for this dataset were collected on-board a moving vehicle in 31 cities of 12 European countries. With over 238,200 person instances manually labeled in over 47,300 images, EuroCity Persons is nearly one order of magnitude larger than datasets used previously for person detection in traffic scenes. The dataset furthermore contains a large number of person orientation annotations (over 211,200). We optimize four state-of-the-art deep learning approaches (Faster R-CNN, R-FCN, SSD and YOLOv3) to serve as baselines for the new object detection benchmark. In experiments with previous datasets we analyze the generalization capabilities of these detectors when trained with the new dataset. We furthermore study the effect of the training set size, the dataset diversity (day- versus night-time, geographical region), the dataset detail (i.e., availability of object orientation information) and the annotation quality on the detector performance. Finally, we analyze error sources and discuss the road ahead.Accepted Author ManuscriptIntelligent Vehicle
