Coustasse, Alberto, Assessment of Obesity as a Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factor in a Geriatric Rural Texas Community – A Six Month Follow-up. Master of Public Health Track, Public Health Administration, December 1999, 22 pp., 9 tables, 9 illustrations, bibliography, 7 titles. The health fair approach was used as a method to establish individual and population health status baselines and to provide a mechanism to follow-up with an elderly population in a rural Texas community. A controlled trial sample of forty-four seniors was initially screened in a primary care clinic in August 1998. Patients were reevaluated at six months and results demonstrated a 46% increase in BMI [Body Mass Index]; 62% remained obese; 62% maintained elevated cholesterol or increased cholesterol values to abnormal values; 61% maintained or increased their BP [blood pressure] to abnormal values. A significant finding was that a change of one unit in the BMI correlated with a change of 19.88 mmHg [millimeter mercury] of SBP [systolic blood pressure] and 18.59 mmHg of DBP [diastolic blood pressure]. The societal economic impact of mortality and morbidity (without the benefit of target interventions) for the initial forty-four seniors was projected at & 74,949. Keywords: Health fairs; obesity; cardiovascular; cost; case management

    No full text

Identifying and classifying access barriers for students with disabilities, through the perspectives of the educational community

Magíster en Educación Inclusiva e InterculturalMaestríaThis article presents in detail the results of the research that collects and analyzes the voices of 377 actors of the educational community (teachers, families, students, administrative staff of District Educational Institutions, hereinafter IED, and officials related to the public policy of education in Bogota). In Colombia, inclusive education is promoted as a fundamental right as a result of the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, supported by regulations such as Decree 1421 of 2017, however its effective implementation faces multiple barriers that hinder the educational trajectories of children and youth with disabilities. This characterization seeks to identify the barriers faced by students with disabilities to access education, from the perspective of the educational community. Through a historical-hermeneutic approach and action research, using semi-structured surveys, direct interviews and focus groups, the comprehensive analysis of this research confirms the presence of multiple barriers in the inclusive education of students with disabilities in Bogota. However, beyond the individual characterization of these barriers, a revealing conclusion emerges, which is that the attitudinal barrier is positioned as the transversal axis that intensifies all other barriers, highlighting the need for a real co-responsibility among all educational actors to minimize the challenges of access, permanence and promotion of the country's educational system

Contractual savings institutions and banks'stability and efficiency

    No full text
The authors analyze the relationship between the development of contractual savings institutions and banks'efficiency, credit, and liquidity risks. They discuss the potential mechanisms through which the development of contractual savings institutions may affect the banking sector. They show that the development of contractual savings institutions has a significant impact on bank spreads and loan maturity. After controlling for banks'characteristics, macroeconomic factors, and more standard indicators of financial development, they show that the development of contractual savings institutions is associated with increased efficiency of the banking system and greater resilience to credit and liquidity risks.Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Financial Intermediation,Insurance&Risk Mitigation,Contractual Savings,Banks&Banking Reform,Financial Intermediation,Economic Theory&Research,Insurance&Risk Mitigation

The East Asia crisis and corporate finances : the untold micro story

    No full text
Explanations of the causes of the Asian crisis have focused on macroeconomic factors leading to the crisis. This paper offers a complementary corporate distress perspective linking the crisis to corporate finances. Key ratios for companies in various countries are presented in the paper. The global benchmarking imposes a consistent cross-border analysis of financial risk and performance, and sheds light on the crisis. The study provides a statistical review of the financial practices and performance of corporates in Asia: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand benchmarked against financials of corporates in other countries: Latin America, and industrialized countries: France, Germany, Japan and USA. A thematic point that comes across in all the results of the corporate financial analysis is unsustainable rapid (and probably excessive) investment in fixed assets financed by excessive borrowing in some Asian countries- e.g., Indonesia, Korea and Thailand. The East Asian investment-spending spree resulted in poor profitability, reflected in low, and declining return on equity, and return on capital employed. It leads to the conclusion that at the core of the corporate crisis were financial excesses that violated prudent financial practices, and eventually lead to the inevitable financial distress we are witnessing. Therefore, the empirical findings presented in the paper lend credence to the view advanced by Krugman that crony capitalism was at the core of the crisis. Crony capitalism was manifested in supportive bad policies-e.g., implicit government guarantees, and poor banking supervision- that lead to poor credit allocation decisions in the banking dominated financial system. Preliminary findings suggest as well vast differences in Economic Value Added between countries- developing and developed alike. The conclusions from an economic value added approach indicate that in an era of increasing capital mobility, corporates are not adhering to global standards in creating shareholder value. The analysis leads to policy conclusions.Banks&Banking Reform,Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Economic Theory&Research,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Environmental Economics&Policies,Financial Intermediation,Economic Theory&Research,Banks&Banking Reform,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Environmental Economics&Policies

Architecture for logic programing with arrangements of finite-state machines

    No full text
We incorporate logic programs (in particular Prolog) into reactive systems. We do this using Logic-labeled finitestate machines (LLFSMs), whose non-event-driven nature results in a deterministic schedule. We also advocate the use of a middleware under the Pull-approach, as opposed to the, currently very common, Push-approach, achieving deterministic semantics and the ability to ensure correctness in both the time and value domains. The deterministic schedule has other advantages, such as bounded resource use for inter-process communication as well as a smaller state space for formal verification. We demonstrate this architecture through a simple case study, contrasting the current prevalent Push approach in ROS [1] with the Pull approach recommended for LLFSMs.Griffith Sciences, School of Information and Communication TechnologyNo Full Tex
