Forest landscapes of the southern western Ghats, India

    No full text
The Western Ghats forests are endowed with large species and habitat diversity, which is nowadays under threat by increasing demographic pressure and changing land use. To address these challenges, a novel and comprehensive approach is sought from the principles of landscape ecology. Morpho-pedological features are used to delineate landscape units all over the Western Ghats of Kerala, among which the Western Anamalai region is chosen to elucidate the relative influence of physical factors, bioclimate and anthropogenic pressures on the characteristics of natural vegetation and on the status of the vertebrate fauna. Highlighting patterns of resource utilization by proximal and distant stakeholders, the book goes about identifying value-based management zones, while proposing management strategies for conservation and sustainable development

MANOVA modelling of a chiropractic longitudinal study using multiple imputation

The purpose of this report is to present the detailed statistical analysis of a randomised, placebo-controlled trial comparing two different treatment modalities to an intervention of no known benefit for people with acute or subacute thoracic spine pain. The therapy arms consist of Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) and Graston Technique (GT) and the placebo is a non-functional ultrasound. A placebo group was utilised because at present there are no proven treatments for non-specific thoracic pain. This trial is registered with the Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry. Ethics approval has been granted by Murdoch University Human Research and Ethics Committee, number 2007/274. The aim of this three arm trial was to test the efficacy of SMT and GT as independent modalities compared to detuned ultrasound for the outcomes of pain and disability. The latter were measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and a modified Oswestry Back Pain Disability Index. The study was conducted at the Murdoch University Chiropractic student clinic in Perth, Australia, and the protocol published in Crothers et al (2008). In this report, Section 2 provides an initial exploratory analysis of the data, Section 3 outlines the statistical models used in the final analysis, Section 4 defines these models in mathematical terms, Section 5 discusses the management of missing values via multiple imputation and Section 6 presents the results of the statistical modelling and hypothesis tests. The clinical study will be published in full elsewhere

On critical analysis and taxonomic evaluation, Diospyros pyrrhocarpoides B.R. Ramesh & De Franceschi is resolved to be only Diospyros ridleyi Bakh., and the former is reduced to a synonym of the latter. The contemporary report of the occurrence of D. pyrrhocarpa Miq. and D. crumenata Thwaites in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is shown to be erroneous

Map by J.-P. Pascal with the collaboration of B.R. Ramesh & K. Kichenassamy, 1992.This explanatory booklet accompanies sheet n°4 (Bangalore-Salem) of the Forest Maps of South India published in 1992 by the French Institute of Pondicherry and which cover at the scale of 1:250,000, the south-eastern part of the Mysore plateau and the hills of the Eastern Ghats dominating the Tamil Nadu pediplain. It introduces the main concepts and methodology of this vegetation mapping exercise, as well as the particular bioclimatic features and forest successions that determine the patterns of vegetation in the part of the Western Ghats, which along with Sri Lanka constitutes one of the 34 world biodiversity hotspots. Each forest type is then described in terms of physiognomy, structure, floristic composition and diversity. Degradation and secondary stages as well as relationships between forest types are also presented. A complete list of species established for each forest type from an intensive fieldwork is also given, along with indications of species ecological preference, phenology, frequency, etc. Interpreted from satelite images, the vegetation maps show the actual state of the forests, their environmental conditions (climatic, edaphic, biotic, administrative) and their potentialities, according to standard codification used for international vegetation mapping

The priority for ideas and philosophy related to "Network Theory" have been traced back and documented by Braun(2004),and credit goes to Karinthy(1929).The IT has empowered to realise it, as the most practical phenomena and it is no more a humour. The OAI (Open Archives Initiatives)and ACIS (Academic Contributor Information System)are progressive in the direction ,which may lead to realise the "Collective Genius" at global level. Focus of present study is on Author-Self-Archiving (A-S-A)Metadata of the 983 Eprints in the Live Archives of the E-LIS (EPrints of Library and Information Science),which were approved till 7th July 2004.The A-S-A Metadata was used for librametric analysis. Self-explanatory bibliographics are illustrated. The highlights include: Conference papers (34%); highest approval, June 2004 (28%); published archives (76%);not refereed (52%); not in public domain (60%); highest self-archiving-author (De Robbio, Antonella). The Nos. of EPrints having single JITA domain specifications were: Theoretical and general aspects of libraries and information(27); Information use and sociology of information(80);Users,literacy and reading(13);Libraries as physical collections(30);Publishing and legal issues(57);Management(13);Industry, profession and education(36);Information sources, supports, channels(113) ; Information treatment for information services, Information functions and techniques (101); Technical services libraries, archives and museums(25); Housing technologies(1); Information technology and library technology(92); and Inter-domainery (395) i.e. having specifications of two or more than two JITA classes

TreeGhatsData is a compilation of lists of tree taxa found in Western Ghats, South India: taxa for which the word "tree" appears in habit description in the book Flowering plants of the Western Ghats edited by the Tropical Botanic Garden Research Institute (TBGRI), including planted or cultivated taxa (Nayar, Beegam, and Sibi. 2014); tree taxa described after 2014 in journal articles; taxon names used in forest surveys published by the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP), in journal articles from 2000, and in the Atlas of endemics of the Western Ghats (Ramesh and Pascal 1997); taxon names reported with "tree" habit in Indian Biodiversity Portal (http://indiabiodiversity.org/)
