    Universities and innovation in space

    No full text
We investigate the role of universities as a knowledge source for regional innovation processes. The contribution of universities is tested on the level of German NUTS-3 regions (Kreise) by using a variety of indicators. We find that the intensity and quality of the research conducted by the universities have a significant effect on regional innovative output while pure size is unimportant. Therefore, a policy that wants to promote regional innovation processes by building up universities should place substantial emphasis on the intensity and quality of the research conducted there. --Universities,innovation,knowledge,spillovers,patents,regional Analysis

Entrepreneurship in the region: Breeding ground for nascent enterpreneurs?

    No full text
This paper employs data from the German Socioeconomic Panel (GSOEP) and data from the German Social Insurance Statistics to study nascent entrepreneurship. In particular, micro data from the GSOEP characterizing employees and nascent entrepreneurs is combined with regional characteristics. Firstly, considering only the micro data the estimates imply that the potential drivers of nascent entrepreneurs are entrepreneurial experience, entrepreneurial learning, and parental self-employment. Secondly, accounting for regional characteristics, which measure the regional level of young and small firms or start-up activity, strongly indicate that regions with strong tradition in entrepreneurship are a breeding ground for nascent entrepreneurs. --Entrepreneurship,self-employment,young and small firms,GSOEP

De l'utilité des aménagements routiers dans l'agglomération nantaise

Major road infrastructure projects have been realized during the last twenty years in the agglomeration of Nantes (orbital motorway, highways, bridges accross the river Loire). As a new generation of Urban Transportation Plans is about to be started in major french cities, an important point at issue is the one of the estimation of social and economic utility of road infrastructure. In this paper, the author presents a mesogeographic cost-benefits analysis, for year 1994, of road infrastructure realized since 1983. Based on the classical theory of surplus, this analysis allows to estimate the time saved in car transportation due to these investments, and to produce a rate of return for the community of these new roads. Results of calculations are rather high, showing the great usefulness of these realisations. Durvalumab Plus Chemotherapy for Advanced Biliary Tract Cancer Treatment: Insights from the TOPAZ-1 Trial

    No full text
Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are a difficult-to-treat group of tumors with an overall poor prognosis. Until 2022, combination chemotherapy was the first-line treatment standard for patients with advanced BTCs, achieving a moderate patient survival improvement. The evolution of chemoimmunotherapy has since shifted the first-line treatment landscape for advanced BTCs. In 2022, the publication of results from the pivotal phase III TOPAZ-1 trial marked a critical turning point, showing that adding durvalumab to standard chemotherapy with cisplatin and gemcitabine (CG) significantly improved overall survival in previously untreated patients with unresectable and metastatic BTCs. TOPAZ-1 marked the first major advancement in BTC treatment for more than a decade. This review summarizes the clinical evidence supporting the addition of durvalumab to CG in this indication, including the latest 3-year follow-up data from the TOPAZ-1 trial, presented at the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF) 2024 Annual Conference and at the European Society for Medical Oncology Gastrointestinal Cancers (ESMO GI) Congress 2024, alongside real-world outcome data reflecting two years of clinical practice since FDA approval of durvalumab plus CG for first-line treatment of BTC. Additionally, we briefly touch on the underlying molecular mechanisms leading to synergy between immunotherapy and chemotherapy in BTC treatment and the potential implications for future BTC treatment strategies. Cellular structures in Topology

    No full text
This book describes the construction and the properties of CW-complexes. These spaces are important because firstly they are the correct framework for homotopy theory, and secondly most spaces that arise in pure mathematics are of this type. The authors discuss the foundations and also developments, for example, the theory of finite CW-complexes, CW-complexes in relation to the theory of fibrations, and Milnor's work on spaces of the type of CW-complexes. They establish very clearly the relationship between CW-complexes and the theory of simplicial complexes, which is developed in great detail. Exercises are provided throughout the book; some are straightforward, others extend the text in a non-trivial way. For the latter; further reference is given for their solution. Each chapter ends with a section sketching the historical development. An appendix gives basic results from topology, homology and homotopy theory. These features will aid graduate students, who can use the work as a course text. As a contemporary reference work it will be essential reading for the more specialized workers in algebraic topology and homotopy theory.</jats:p
