HPLC–NMR-Based Chemical Profiling of Matricaria pubescens (Desf.) Schultz and Matricaria recutita and Their Protective Effects on UVA-Exposed Fibroblasts
The present study aimed to investigate the chemical profile and the protective activity on fibroblasts of two Matricaria species: M. pubescens, which grows wild in Algeria, and M. recutita, which is cultivated in Greece. A comparative phytochemical investigation using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, coupled with Photodiode Array Detection and Mass Spectrometry (HPLC–PDA–MS) combined with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), was performed for the identification of the main constituents in the flowerheads of these medicinal plants. In M. pubescens more than 25 compounds were identified and/or isolated; among them are quercetagenin-3-O-glucopyranoside, reported for the first time in Matricaria sp., and two polyamines previously reported in other Asteraceae species. In M. recutita, which is the officially recognized species in Europe, 19 constituents were identified. To minimize time analysis, the structure elucidation was based on a multi-analytical approach directly on subfractions. Two representative polar extracts from each species were characterized chemically and further screened for their protective effects on 3T3 fibroblasts. The cells were exposed to a mild toxic dose of UVA light (6 J/cm2), in the presence of different concentrations of the extracts. Both M. recutita and M. pubescens extracts were effective. The methanolic extract was the best protective agent at lower concentrations (0.1 to 10 μg/mL), and hydromethanolic was best at higher ones (100–200 μg/mL). M. recutita exhibited the most enhanced cell viability in relation to those not exposed to UV control; it ranged from of 28 to 49% higher viability, depending on the dose, leading to the conclusion that the latter seems to exhibit potent cytoprotective activity and significant regeneration activity

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Intra-abdominal Aspergillosis due to Aspergillus fumigatus in a Dog
A 3 year-old, spayed female, mixed-breed dog presented with abdominal distension due to a large mass, detected during abdominal palpation and confirmed by abdominal imaging. Cytological examination of the mass was suggestive of pyogranulomatous inflammation. During exploratory laparotomy, extensive peritoneal adhesions and multifocal nodular lesions on the liver, spleen and omentum were revealed. One week later, the dog deteriorated and was euthanized. Numerous firm masses were observed in the liver, spleen, left kidney, stomach, small and large intestine during necropsy. The lungs, heart, and ocular structures were macroscopically normal. Histopathology results (surgery and necropsy) revealed fungal hyphae enclosed in the pyogranulomatous lesions. Using Earth Observation Application to Air Quality in Addition to in-situ monitoring: HARMONIA IRAP platform
The effect of air quality (AQ) on public health after the COVID-19 pandemic attracted more attention although this undeniable link was studied before. Such diseases caused or accelerated by the air pollution levels has a long list including respiratory, cardiovascular, and lung disease. There are different associations between air pollution and the diseases i.e., long-term, short-term exposure and finally higher levels of air pollution. To improve a healthy environment in urban areas, increasing AQ is a must and in-situ monitoring is one method to track it. To combine in-situ monitored data and earth observation (EO) data could provide an efficient way to collect data in different temporal resolution, analyze, detect any existing anomalies, eventually provide a model for possible scenarios through climate change. This paper will discuss the benefits and challenges lie under the combination of in-situ and EO data in this framework. It will present the suggested integrated resilience assessment platform (IRAP) that is under development in the HARMONIA project (in respond to the topic LC-CLA-19-2020 and its added value on this field. The IRAP platform will eventually utilize the GEOSS datasets, along with other data collections, and adopt proper Deep Learning techniques in an effort to build robust, comprehensive data cube objects, which are considered to be the state-of-the-art solution to store and organize EO data. Information extracted from the datacubes will be visualized in the integrated graphical user interface of the platform in order to inform municipalities and citizens for potential climate change related risks and vulnerabilities
Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
Special values of L-functions by a Siegel–Weil–Kudla–Rallis formula
AbstractWe study the arithmeticity of special values of L-functions attached to cuspforms which are Hecke eigenfunctions on hermitian quaternion groups Sp∗(m,0) which form a reductive dual pair with G=O∗(4n). For f1 and f2 two cuspforms on H, consider their theta liftings θf1 and θf2 on G. Then we compute a Rankin–Selberg type integral and obtain an integral representation of the standard L-function:〈θf1⋅Es,θf2〉G=〈f1,f2〉H⋅Lstd(f1,s). Also a short proof the Siegel–Weil–Kudla–Rallis formula is given. This implies that at the critical point s=s0=m−n+12 Eisenstein series Es have rational Fourier coefficients. Via the natural embedding G×G↪G˜=O∗(8n) we restrict the holomorphic Siegel-type Eisenstein series E˜ on G and decompose as a sum over an orthogonal basis for holomorphic cusp forms of fixed type. As a consequence we prove that the space of holomorphic cuspforms for O∗(4n) of given type is spanned by cuspforms so that the finite-prime parts of Fourier coefficients are rational and obtain special value results for the L-functions

during the period September 1975 through May 1976 is presented. During this nine month
internship the author worked as an Engineer II in the Industrial Processes discipline of this
large consulting engineering firm... The author's prime responsibility was as one of three
lead design engineers on the design of a large wastewater treatment facility for a pulp mill
in Hoquiam, Washington owned by ITT Rayonier Inc. The work generally consisted of the design
of individual treatment units and associated piping and pumping. The purpose of the project
was to provide wastewater treatment capabilities that would satisfy the effluent limitations
(standards) imposed upon the mill by the State of Washington Department of Ecology and the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The author's assignment also entailed necessary
interaction with the project manager and other CH���M HILL design engineers and support staff
members, the client's representatives, and representatives of two other consulting engineering
firms working on the project. Thus, the internship position at CH���M HILL provided considerable
experience coordinating the author's work with the work of other engineers, guiding the design
and administrative efforts of a support staff, and interacting regularly with the client and
other consulting firms. This broad exposure to a variety of engineering and organizational
problems provided a valuable educational experience
