Structural damage identification using response surface-based multi-objective optimization: A comparative study
Non-destructive structural damage identification (SDI) and quantification of damage are important issues for any engineering structure. In this study, a comparative assessment of the damage identification capability of different design of experiment (DOE) methods (such as, 2k factorial design, central composite design, Box–Behnken design, D-optimal design and Taguchi’s OA design) used in response surface methodology (RSM) has been carried out. Three different structures (simply supported beam, spring mass damper system and fibre reinforced polymer composite bridge deck) have been used for various single and multiple damage conditions to access the comparative ability of the aforementioned methods in identifying damage addressing two critically important criteria: accuracy and computational efficiency. The study reveals that central composite design and D-optimal design are most recommendable among the five considered DOE methods for SDI. Two different input parameter screening methods (sensitivity analysis using RSM utilizing 2k factorial design and D-optimal design, general sensitivity analysis) have been explored in this study, and their comparative performance is also discussed. It is found that both the methods used in sensitivity analysis for the purpose of input parameter screening in the damage identification process work satisfactorily. Performance of RSM-based damage identification algorithm for different DOE methods under the influence of noise has also been addressed in this paper.</p

Hecalus shanayai Nikoshe & Meshram, sp. nov. (Figs. 3, 8, 13, 34–40) Male (Figs. 3, 8) Color yellowish green to green. Anterior margin of head with transverse submarginal fuscous line, face (Fig. 13) brown, gena black, frontoclypeus transverse black striae invisible in middle. Compound eyes black, ocelli yellow. Forewings subhyaline, with diffuse fuscous transverse band across costal margin. Bases of tibial macrosetae and tarsi light brown. Head including eyes as long as width of pronotum. Head produced in front, crown length 0.7x shorter than width between eyes. Face as long as wide; anterior margin of pronotum not extending beyond eyes, more or less parallel with eyes. Frontoclypeus longer than wide; frontal suture, terminating laterad of ocelli. Ocelli near anterior margin, very closely oppressed to eyes. Pronotum length 0.2x as long as wide and 0.9x length of scutellum. Male genitalia. Pygofer (Fig. 34) longer than wide, posterior margin triangular, with posterior ½ densely setose. Style (Fig. 36) with preapical lobe obtusely angulate, with few microsetae, apophysis short, 0.25 of the total length. Connective (Fig. 40) with stem 2x shorter than arms. Aedeagal shaft narrowed apically, broad medially in lateral view, foliate in apical 0.2 with sparsely serrated margin, dorsal margin with short subapical tooth, with pair of slender apical processes half as long as shaft extended anterolaterad, gonopore subapical on ventral margin (Figs. 37–39). Measurements (mm). Male 4.63 long, 1.3 wide across eyes, 1.01 wide across hind margin of pronotum. Type material. Holotype ³, INDIA: Maharashtra: Chikhaldara (21.4030° N, 77.3268° E), 22.ix.2015, Sweep net Coll. Akash Nikoshe (NPC). Paratypes, 6 ³ with same data as holotype. Etymology. This species is named in honour of “Miss Shanaya” (daughter of the corresponding author) for her support to the author to pursue his passion in leafhopper taxonomy. Remarks. Hecalus shanayai sp. nov. externally resembles H. lutescens (Distant) (Figs. 2, 7, 12, 27–33) but differs in having the aedeagal shaft foliate in the apical 0.2 with a sparsely serrated margin, the dorsal margin with a short subapical tooth, and lacking mid-dorsal lateral expansions which are more distinct in the latter. This list is intended to serve as a basis to prepare conservation strategies and generate awareness among the local people. The checklist comprises a total of 106 butterfly species belonging to 06 families, 19 subfamilies, and 74 genera. It includes the range extension of Prosotas bhutea into the lower Gangetic plains of South Bengal.El objetivo de este documento es investigar y producir una lista de verificación actualizada y exhaustiva de las especies de mariposas registradas alrededor de la granja lechera Haringhata hasta diciembre de 2020. By a celebrated author: Nick Carter, Frederic Dey and authorial voice in dime novels
Using Theodor Adorno's division between culture industry, characterized by standardization and a lack of autonomy, and mass culture, characterized by a more autonomous expressivity of the populace, this thesis explores issues of authorial autonomy and expression in the dime novel industry, focusing on the Nick Carter series. Contemporary discourse about and from the authors is compiled to show authorial engagement with the rhetoric around and from the dime novel industry. Themes of identity and autonomy are examined in the writings by and on Frederic Dey, showing how particular authorial concerns are inscribed into dime novel texts despite editorial attempts to create standardization. This thesis argues that the dime novel industry sits on the border between culture industry and mass culture, both constraining and enabling artistic expression by working-class individuals
Topic mining and categorization in online discussion forums
Online Forums provide a useful way to engage in discussions about a wide variety of topics, as well as gather custom information for which an exact source may not be available, using a combination of knowledge and human interpretation. Usually forums have categories which cater to a particular topic of interest, allowing information seekers and topic experts to meet. It is thus imperative to organize forum data into an organized structure. In this work we look at methods for categorizing forum posts into appropriate categories, where the number of such categories is large. We compare several baseline methods with state-of-the-art deep learning methods and analyze their performance. We observe that given the highly keyword-centric nature of our data, deep learning methods only slightly outperform baseline methods. Following this, we perform topic modeling on the forum data to find latent topics which creates a hierarchy across forum categories and clusters similar categories. In this process we observe that some of the recent approaches in topic modeling that utilize word embeddings lead to better topics. Sensitivity to model misspecification of the Von Bertanlanffy grown model with measurement error in age
The Von Bertalanffy growth function (VonB) specifies the length of a fish as a function
of its age. However, in practice, age is measured with error. We study the structural
errors-in-variables (SEV) approach to account for measurement error (ME) in age.
Cope and Punt (2007) also proposed this approach for fish growth data. They assumed
unobserved age had a simple Gamma distribution. In this study, we investigate
whether SEV VonB parameter estimators are robust to the Gamma approximation
of true unobserved ages. By robust we mean lack of bias due to ME and model misspecification.
Our results demonstrate that this method is not robust. We propose
a flexible parametric Normal mixture distribution for the unobserved true ages to
reduce this bias when estimating the length-age relationship with a VonB model. We
investigate the performance of this approach in comparison to the Gamma age model
through extensive simulation studies and a real-life data set.Includes bibliographical references (pages 123-127)
Analytical and numerical modeling of progressive failure of onshore and offshore slopes with sensitive clay layer
Landslides in both onshore and offshore environments are always a potential hazard and a great threat to many communities and infrastructure. There are some similarities and differences between failure mechanisms and potential causes of failure of slopes in these two environments. Large landslides in both environments are generally progressive in nature. This becomes more pronounced when the slide occurs in sensitive clays, generally assumed under undrained condition. Post-peak softening of sensitive clays is considered as one of the main reasons for pronounced progressive failure. Sensitive clays found in both environments show nonlinear post-peak strain softening behavior at large strain/displacement during undrained loading. Post-slide investigations show that failure patterns of many large-scale submarine landslides through marine clays could be very similar to onshore landslides through sensitive clays as encountered in Eastern Canada and Scandinavia (e.g. translational progressive slide, and spreads). As onshore slope failures in sensitive clays are better documented than submarine landslides in marine clays, information on onshore sensitive clays available in the literature can be utilized as the basis to model both submarine and subaerial landslides in sensitive clays. The main focus of the present study is to model slope failure through weak sensitive clay layers under undrained conditions. A nonlinear mathematical model for post-peak degradation of undrained shear strength of sensitive clay, applicable to small to large-strains, is proposed in this study based on available experimental results. The slope failure mechanisms are examined using the concept of shear band propagation.
Various factors have been identified in the past that could trigger a large-scale slope failure in both environments. Among them, the effects of toe erosion, surcharge loading, and strength reduction in a section of a weak layer are considered in this study. In a marine environment, strength reduction in a section of a weak layer in an offshore slope might result in initiation and propagation of a shear band in both upslope and downslope directions at the same time. By incorporating a nonlinear post-peak softening model, an analytical solution is developed to examine a possible mechanism of failure of mild submarine slopes containing a weak zone of low shear strength. In comparison, due to toe erosion, a shear band formation could be initiated and propagated upward (inward) from the river bank which could lead to a spread type failure forming horsts and grabens. Upslope surcharge loading (e.g. the placement of fill) could also generate shear bands that might propagate down towards the river bank. Numerical modeling of these types of slope failure is considered as a large deformation problem. Finite element (FE) models in Lagrangian framework cannot model the complete process of these slides, as significant mesh distortion occurs. Coupled Eulerian Lagrangian (CEL), a finite element approach in Abaqus FE software is used in this study to model these progressive failures of slopes. A nonlinear strain softening model for undrained shear strength of sensitive clays is incorporated in the FE simulation. Upward progressive failure leading to spread due to toe erosion, downward progressive failure due to a construction load in the upslope area, and combined effects of upward and downward propagation of shear bands on stability of a river bank slope have been simulated in this study. Simulations are also carried out to model submarine landslides due to the existence of a weak layer. The FE simulated results and failure patterns of ground surface or seabed are compared with the slide morphology presented in the literature. The main advantages of the present FE modeling are: (i) extremely large strains in the shear bands can be successfully simulated without numerical issues, (ii) a prior definition of shearing zones with special mesh and/or element type is not required to capture extreme strains in the shear bands, and (iii) the FE program automatically identifies the location of critical shear band formation and direction of propagation.Includes bibliographical references
High-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomography system and structural characterization of ex vivo biological tissues using nanosensitive OCT
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a rapidly growing imaging modality which is based on the principle of low coherence interferometry. It can perform high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging of the microstructure of biological tissues by detecting the coherent spectrum from the backscattered light. One significant advantage of OCT is that it can extract structural and functional imaging information in real time leading to a wide range of clinical and industrial imaging applications. Integration of OCT technology for imaging with high axial and spatial resolution to enhance the structural visibility into clinical practice is ongoing. During the FDOCT image construction, after inverse Fourier transform, high spatial frequencies, corresponding to small structural information is removed from the interference signal. All the high spatial frequency information exists in the OCT signal but does not exist in the constructed OCT image and it reduces the sensitivity to detect small structural changes. To detect this high spatial frequency information in each voxel of the three-dimensional OCT image, nanosensitive OCT (nsOCT) method has been invented. The nsOCT method provides the small size structural information with nanoscale sensitivity from all depth profiles of one single B-frame. The motivation of the thesis is to develop a high-resolution SDOCT system and enhance the structural imaging capability of ex vivo biological tissues using the developed nanosensitive OCT. The first part of this thesis summarizes the fundamentals of OCT with a focus on the principles and key performance metrics. The various stages of development of OCT imaging since its invention is also summarized. Further, the thesis explores a development of the simple characterization scheme using fibre-based near-isometric resolution OCT system at a centre wavelength of 1300 nm with 400 nm bandwidth. Despite the challenges in transporting a broadband spectrum using fibre-optics, the system investigation was motivated by the ever-increasing demand for commercialization of high-resolution OCT systems and simplification of construction. Furthermore, we evaluated and demonstrated a direct measurement method for axial resolution using an air wedge. Imaging of biomedical and other samples is demonstrated using a high numerical aperture objective lens and compared with images from a commercial OCT system. Further, the effect of the improved structural visibility by achieving image voxels closer to an isometric shape with a high NA sample lens is presented using our bespoke high-resolution OCT system. The second part of this thesis discussed the application of nanosensitive OCT to improve the structural visibility with nanoscale sensitivity and broader dynamic range of detected spatial frequencies. The thesis demonstrates numerical and experimental detection of a few nanometres structural difference using the nsOCT method from single B-scan images of phantoms with sub-micron periodic structures acting like Bragg gratings. After that a single en face image is used to confirm the ability of nanosensitive OCT to map structural changes within the skin tissue with an intervening margin area at clinically relevant depths. In addition, the thesis compared the nsOCT en face image with a high-resolution confocal microscopy image from the same tissue. Different bandwidths of structural sizes confirm the structural differences between the healthy and lesional/cancerous region which further allow detection of the skin cancer margin. A corresponding study with other bandwidths of the lower spatial frequencies was done using histological images. As an another application of nsOCT, further the thesis demonstrated the structural changes with nanoscale sensitivity inside ex vivo bovine cornea associated with CXL treatment and clearly detected by the proposed over-sampling nsOCT method. This study shows that the spatial periods inside corneal stroma increased slightly after 30 minutes riboflavin instillation but decreased significantly after 30 min UVA irradiation. En face nsOCT images at different corneal depths have also confirmed the consistent consequences, demonstrating that the nanoscale structural size decreases after the CXL treatment. In summary, this thesis demonstrates that the broad bandwidth high-resolution spectral domain OCT can be used as a tool for structural imaging of biomaterial in conjunction with the nsOCT approach

Type-material from Joshimath of the same size as specimens of yazakii ssp.n. from E. Nepal. Pattern and coloration almost the same in both subspecies. There are lighter grey specimens which only have the area outside of the postmedial line darker grey, and completely darker grey specimens.Ante- and postmedial lines are punctate, with the dots on the veins. Females with very indistinct fasciae rarely occur.About half of the specimens of the subspecies yazakii, however, have continuous transverse fasciae (see fig. 2m): two of four in coll. ZFMK, four of eight in coll. Yazaki; the relation may change in larger samples. In both collections the single females have punctate fasciae. Among the nominotypical subspecies from Joshimath (n=7) and paratypes from Punjab (n=3) specimens with continuous fasciae do not occur. The hindwing bases in males of ssp. yazakii are swollen and distinctly modified like a rectangular pouch, with a small, round, membranous section, similar to a tympanum, near the base of the frenulum. The basal part of vein Rs (upper vein of the hindwing cell) is also strongly angled, running adjacent to the distal border of the pouch. The function of this unusual structure is unknown and it should be paid more attention to it in future. Further differences are seen in the shape of the distal process of the 7 th sternite in females: a rather narrow, transverse, almost rectangular process in P. joshimathensis joshimathensis (Fig. 4h), a broader, distally double-curved process in ssp. yazakii (Fig. 3e). The male genitalia of both subspecies are without distinctive differences, but the female genitalia are slightly larger in subsp. yazakii, with the anterior part of corpus bursae larger in relation to the posterior part and a larger signum with wider opening, broader sclerotized ring with more numerous and longer spines. Morphologically, all these differences are considered to be of subspecific value, though the genetic distance is rather high. Distribution. Central and eastern Nepal (Fig. 1 (a)) Etymology. Dedicated to Katsumi Yazaki, Tokyo, one of the best-known experts of East Asian Geometridae, who as the first revising author studied specimens of Prometopidia intensively, designating and figuring also the lectotype of the type-species in the collection of the NHMUK. Moreover, he first recorded specimens of Prometopidia from Nepal. Genetic data. BIN not yet assigned, data based on three sequences with fragment lengths of 407 bp, all from eastern Nepal. Maximum intraspecific variation 1.0%. Genetic distance to nominotypical subspecies 3.3%, requiring confirmation by additional specimens.
