A "Labyrinth of Linkages" in Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina"
The renowned Russian writer Leo Tolstoy created a realistic masterpiece in Anna Karenina (1878). In the same work, moreover, he utilized allegory and symbol to an extent and at a level of sophistication unknown in his other works. In Browning’s study, the author identifies and analyzes previously unnoticed or only briefly mentioned “linkages and keystones” found in two highly developed clusters of symbols, arising from Anna’s momentous train ride and peasant nightmares, and of allegories, rooted in Vronsky’s disastrous steeplechase. Within this labyrinth of symbol and allegory lies embedded much of the novel’s most significant meaning. This study will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Russian literature, Tolstoy, symbol, allegory, structuralism, and moral criticism
Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club
MPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him.
This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director

Inbreeding in three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.): effects on testis and sperm traits
Mating between relatives often results in inbreeding depression, and is assumed to have a strong effect on fitness traits such as fertility and gonad/gamete quality. However, data concerning this topic are contradictory and particularly scarce in fishes. Three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) show inbreeding depression in fertilization and hatching success, survival rates, body symmetry and behavioural traits. To date, any knowledge of the impact of inbreeding on males ’ gonads and gametes is lacking in this species. In the present study, testis and sperm traits were quantified in outbred and inbred males. Overall, these traits were not generally impaired by inbreeding, and this result was not changed by a second/third generation of brother–sister matings. However, testes brightness, a potential measure of oxidative stress, was negatively correlated with sperm number. Addi-tionally, inbred males with higher body condition had significantly brighter testes, whereas their sperm number was significantly negatively correlated with sperm quality (as estimated by head volume). Such a trade-off did not appear in outbred males. The comparatively small impact of inbreeding on testis and sperm traits might be explained by the low number of inbred individuals that reached the reproductive phase. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, , ••–••. Joe Wright’s Screen Adaptation of L. Tolstoy’s Novel “Anna Karenina”.
Darbs sastāv no divām nodaļām. Lev Tolstoy's novel "Anna Karenina " in Joe Wright screening (UK, 2012). Bachelor's thesis, Riga,2018. The thesis is dedicated to analysing the screening of "Anna Karenina" by the director Joe Wright. The purpose of the work is to compare the novel and the screening by evaluating the similarities and pointing out the differences. The author managed to do a comparing analysis between the screening and the literary source. Special attention is dedicated to cinematography as a hybrid type of art, the problem with the room in cinematography, as well as the significance of theather in the art of cinema. The work consists of two chapters. The most important theoretical questions, that will be needed as well for the practical research, are researched during the first chapter. In the practical part the author has compared the screening with the novel and discovered the main differences, as well analysed the novel's main character reflections in the screening. The research might be interesting for film critics, philologists, who study and work with literary work screenings. The research might also capture the interest of anyone studying and specializing in Lev Tolstoy's work
