Intern experience at CHM Hill, Inc.: an internship report
Includes author's vita"Submitted to the College of Engineering of Texas A&M University in partial
fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Engineering."Includes bibliographical referencesA review of the author's internship experience with CHM HILL, Inc.
during the period September 1975 through May 1976 is presented. During this nine month
internship the author worked as an Engineer II in the Industrial Processes discipline of this
large consulting engineering firm... The author's prime responsibility was as one of three
lead design engineers on the design of a large wastewater treatment facility for a pulp mill
in Hoquiam, Washington owned by ITT Rayonier Inc. The work generally consisted of the design
of individual treatment units and associated piping and pumping. The purpose of the project
was to provide wastewater treatment capabilities that would satisfy the effluent limitations
(standards) imposed upon the mill by the State of Washington Department of Ecology and the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The author's assignment also entailed necessary
interaction with the project manager and other CHM HILL design engineers and support staff
members, the client's representatives, and representatives of two other consulting engineering
firms working on the project. Thus, the internship position at CHM HILL provided considerable
experience coordinating the author's work with the work of other engineers, guiding the design
and administrative efforts of a support staff, and interacting regularly with the client and
other consulting firms. This broad exposure to a variety of engineering and organizational
problems provided a valuable educational experience

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied

ENGLISH:
In Islam there are two forms of marriage: monogamy and polygamy. Talking about polygamy, one of the most important is a matter of justice. Fazlur Rahman and M. Quraish Shihab are two figures who have contrasting ideas on the justice in polygamy despite departing from the same passage in the Qur’an.
The are three purposes of this research; 1) To describe the concept of justice in polygamy according to Fazlur Rahman and M. Quraish Shihab, 2) To describe method of istimbat used by Fazlur Rahman and M. Quraish Shihab about the concept of justice in polygamy, 3) To analyze implications of method of istimbat applied by Fazlur Rahman and M. Quraish Shihab in solving problems of contemporary Islamic law.
This research, use a qualitative descriptive study. The data analysis applied content analysis and comparative analysis. That methods are used to describe and analyze Fazlur Rahman and M. Quraish Shihab thought which includes the concept of justice in polygamy and methods of istimbat.
The results of research are as follows. 1) That the concept of justice in polygamy according to Fazlur Rahman is not only in the phisical treatment but in terms of love and affection. Meanwhile, according to M. Quraish Shihab the concept of justice ini polygamy is just in the field of materials, not included in the field of immaterial (love or affection). 2) Method of istimbat used by Fazlur Rahman is double movement method. While M. Quraish Shihab used madhhabi- contextualization method. 3) The implications from double movement method should promote the moral value than the effort to discovery the legal formal, and then the law was result also be moralist. While using madhhabi-contextualization method through the development madhhab is that the efforts to discovery law must through from fiqh madhhab whice have long used as a reference and then based on the character and values of contemporary religious community
Investigation of mitochondrial m.1555A>G aminoglycoside hearing loss
The mitochondrial DNA mutation, m.1555A>G, predisposes to severe hearing loss following aminoglycoside antibiotic exposure. The m.1555A>G mutation can also lead to hearing loss in the absence of antibiotic exposure termed non-syndromic m.1555A>G hearing loss. Two distinct concepts of mitochondrial dysfunction related to the m.1555A>G mutation have been postulated - mRNA misreading and 12S m⁶₂A rRNA methylation. Evidence from cell and animal models has indicated that m.1555A>G may make the 12S rRNA a better substrate for m⁶₂A methylation by the mitochondrial transcription factor B1 (TFB1M) enzyme, resulting in a higher ratio of methylated: unmethylated 12S rRNA transcripts in the mitochondrion, so called ‘hypermethylation’. Hypermethylation is thought to trigger a cascade of events, which results in mitochondrial dysfunction and hearing loss. Using a novel fluorescent method, suitable for paediatric patients, 12S m⁶₂A rRNA methylation was investigated in primary and non-primary cell-derived RNA samples from patients with m.1555A>G and controls. The data presented in this work indicates that previous findings may be an artefact of the experimental models used to study this hypothesis and 12S m⁶₂A rRNA methylation is unlikely to be a pathogenic mechanism. Aminoglycoside-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is reported to play a key role in cochlear cell death. It is hypothesised that increased mitochondrial mRNA misreading disrupts oxidative phosphorylation, which leads to increased ROS. Using a multiplex flow cytometry-based method to measure mitochondrial superoxide, the response of cells from cases with m.1555A>G and controls to aminoglycoside treatment was examined. The data indicates that the control response to aminoglycoside treatment is variable. Exploring this variation will be crucial if the effects of antibiotic-induced changes in mitochondrial mRNA misreading are to be investigated and the cellular events that ensue to be targeted for treatment
Fundamental Rights in Times of Emergency: Ataur Rahman Vs Muhibur Rahman Revisited
This research analyses the Bangladesh' Court Decision on the case of Ataur Rahman vs. Mahibur Rahman with regrad to fundamental rights in times of emergency. It is argued that the decision of the court in Ataur Rahman vs. Muhibur Rahman is erroneous decision. This is because while Article 141C of Bangladesh Constitution gives the Presidnet the power to suspend certain fundamental rights, yet Articles 27 to 35 and 41 of the Constitution cannot be suspended. In Bangladesh's legal system, fundamental human rights are commonly viewed as a set of legal protections. Part III of the Constitution of Bangladesh has confirmed these rights for the citizens of Bangladesh. Some fundamental rights are even universally recognized rights which are contained in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), or the UN International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Article 4 of the ICCPR deals with the state of emergency and Article 4(2) provides a list of non-derogable rights. Such as the right to life, the prohibition of torture, slavery etc. These rights are completely non-derogable in nature and cannot be derogated at all including during a state of emergency. Furthermore the Apex court of Bangladesh tried to justify that the President can derogate any fundamental right during an emergency. Such a proposition is contradicting core parts of our Constitution as well as several International instruments. This research uses normative legal research with statute approach and case approach, especialy analysing Ataur Rahman vs. Muhibur Rahman case
