Reconstruction and reduction of uncertainties in aeroelastic systems
The growing demand for energy worldwide has resulted in the exploration anddevelopment of sustainable forms of energy, such as wind energy. Wind turbinesare typically used to extract power from the wind through the rotational motionof blades, which are aeroelastic structures. Among other practical examples, aircraft wings are also aeroelastic in nature. Aeroelastic structures suffer from inherent instabilities and fatigue, and hence their design process requires characterisation of safe operating regimes in order to prevent failure. In this dissertation, we present a methodology for predicting dynamic aeroelastic behaviour, and additionally employing data from experiments to improve predictions. The methodology is demonstrated on three test-cases: a 2-DoF airfoil, the Goland wing and an experimental, downwind, wind turbine. The presented method is generic in terms of applicability to any aeroelastic problem, however considering the engineering and societal relevance, the wind turbine problem is extensively investigated. The dissertation contributes to three broad scientific domains - aeroelasticity, reduced ordermodelling and uncertainty quantification.Aerodynamic
Towards Real-Time Distinction of Power System Faults and Cyber Attacks
This paper presents a methodology to distinguish between three-phase faults and GOOSE cyber attacks, aimed at opening the circuit breakers in the power grid. We propose a scheme that utilizes Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU)-enabled monitoring of power grid states, and communication network packet logs in the substation. In this scheme, by leveraging both cyber and physical data correlations and applying a Seasonal Autoregressive Moving Average (SARMA) model, we successfully distinguish between 3-phase faults and cyber attacks. The proposed scheme is tested using the benchmark IEEE 9-bus system, and can distinguish cyber attacks from faults in less than 0.2s. This demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed scheme for power system cyber security analytics.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Intelligent Electrical Power GridsElectrical Sustainable Energ
The Baltic challenge and Euro-area entry. Bruegel Policy Contribution 2009/13, November 2009
Resident Fellow Zsolt Darvas takes a look at the issue of the Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - and the challenges facing those three countries in the aftermath of the financial crisis. He argues that because it is in the broader European interest to prevent a collapse in the Baltics, the best option is immediate euro entry at a suitable exchange rate supported by appropriate resolution in order to manage the resulting debt overhang. However, there seems to be no legal basis for this under the current euro accession criteria. Furthermore, the economic foundations of the criteria are fundamentally flawed, as euro-area members continue to violate the criteria while the EU's expansion to 27 members has made the criteria tougher for new member states to meet themselves. Ultimately, the European Council has the ability to reform the criteria without a formal treaty change. The Council should do so, the author argues, and allow for more meaningful benchmarks for all future euro-area applicants
