    Summary of Work Report: Equity-Methods Curriculum TA

    In Spring 2021, the Department of Epidemiology at UNC Chapel Hill created a first of its kind position - the "Equity-Methods Curriculum TA." The primary goal of the Equity-Methods Curriculum TA was to identify opportunities to strategically layer and integrate concepts of health equity and anti-racism into the existing material students experience as they advance through the core methods curriculum. This report summarizes the work completed by Rae Anne M. Martinez between May 2021-May 2022, during the inaugural year of the position. Additional context on the thematic and logistical structure of the Department of Epidemiology's core methods curriculum, prior changes (2017-2021), original scope of work, and approach is also provided. This report has been edited for external sharing and distribution. A more detailed version of this report was provided to Department of Epidemiology leadership on April 18th, 2022.     Five QTL hotspots for yield in short rotation coppice bioenergy poplar: the poplar biomass loci

    Background: Concern over land use for non-food bioenergy crops requires breeding programmes that focus on producing biomass on the minimum amount of land that is economically-viable. To achieve this, the maximum potential yield per hectare is a key target for improvement. For long lived tree species, such as poplar, this requires an understanding of the traits that contribute to biomass production and their genetic control. An important aspect of this for long lived plants is an understanding of genetic interactions at different developmental stages, i.e. how genes or genetic regions impact on yield over time.Results: QTL mapping identified regions of genetic control for biomass yield. We mapped consistent QTL across multiple coppice cycles and identified five robust QTL hotspots on linkage groups III, IV, X, XIV and XIX, calling these 'Poplar Biomass Loci' (PBL 1–5). In total 20% of the variation in final harvest biomass yield was explained by mapped QTL. We also investigated the genetic correlations between yield related traits to identify 'early diagnostic' indicators of yield showing that early biomass was a reasonable predictor of coppice yield and that leaf size, cell number and stem and sylleptic branch number were also valuable traits.Conclusion: These findings provide insight into the genetic control of biomass production and correlation to 'early diagnostic' traits determining yield in poplar SRC for bioenergy. QTL hotspots serve as useful targets for directed breeding for improved biomass productivity that may also be relevant across additional poplar hybrids

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Toward improved drought tolerance in bioenergy crops: QTL for carbon isotope composition and stomatal conductance in Populus

    Dedicated non-food bioenergy crops like poplar are needed as sustainable, low-input feedstocks for renewable energy in a future drier climate, where they can be grown on marginal soils. Such plants should have a low water, carbon, and chemical footprint. Capturing natural variation in traits associated with water use efficiency (WUE) is the first step to developing trees that require less water and may be adapted to drier environments. We have assessed stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf carbon isotope composition (?13C, an indirect indicator of leaf WUE) in two Populus species, P. deltoides and P. trichocarpa and their F2 progeny, grown in the United Kingdom and in Italy. Populus deltoides leaves showed lower ?13C than P. trichocarpa, suggesting a higher WUE in P. trichocarpa, although without drought preconditioning, gs of P. trichocarpa was less responsive to dehydration and abscisic acid treatment than P. deltoides, suggesting that leaf anatomy may also contribute to ?13C in Populus. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified for ?13C on eight linkage groups (LG) and two QTL for gs. From these. QTL and differential gene expression in response to drought from microarray data, we focused on three hotspots and identified 23 novel candidate genes on LG VI, X, and XVI. We have begun to unravel the genetic basis of WUE in bioenergy Populus revealing important underpinning data for breeding and improvement in poplar genotypes for a future drier climat

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
