In this book, Nadia Radwan explores a key moment of the development of modern Egyptian art, when the foundations of a new artistic practice are defined in the early 20th century. Based on field work and unexplored archival material, this work focuses on a generation of painters and sculptors commonly referred to as the pioneers (al-ruwwad). Trained in institutions, such as the School of Fine Arts in Cairo, their production is inscribed in a project of artistic renaissance and reflects multiple transcultural interactions between Egypt and Europe. This publication thus re-evaluates these artists that opened the path to Egyptian modernism and sheds light their yet understudied production. While art history is now approached in the perspective of circulations, exchange and networks, this book offers a background to a better comprehend the dynamics and stakes of contemporary art in the Middle East
Interview with Zeinab Radwan
An interview between correspondent Iman Rafi and Dr. Zainab Radwan, professor, and chair of Cairo University's Department of Islamic Philosophy, about what is claimed to be a significant difference in perspectives between East and West in various Islamic doctrines, such as polygamy and women's testimony
GPR scan assessment at Mekaad Radwan Ottoman – Cairo, Egypt
AbstractMekaad Radwan monument is situated in the neighborhood of Bab Zuweila in the historical Cairo, Egypt. It was constructed at the middle XVII century (1635 AD). The building has a rectangle shape plan (13×6m) with the longitudinal sides approximately WNW-ESE. It comprises three storages namely; the ground floor; the opened floor (RADWAN Bench) and the living floor with a total elevation of 15m above the street level. The building suffers from severe deterioration phenomena with patterns of damage which have occurred over time. These deterioration and damages could be attributed to foundation problems, subsoil water and also to the earthquake that affected the entire Greater Cairo area in October 1992. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scan was accomplished against the walls of the opened floor (RADWAN Bench) to evaluate the hazard impact on the walls textures and integrity. The results showed an anomalous feature through the southern wall of RADWAN Bench. A mathematical model has been simulated to confirm the obtained anomaly and the model response exhibited a good matching with the outlined anomaly
Poetry ars divina: Musaeus’ Prophetic Oration in the Epic Poem Radivilias by Jan Radwan
Heroic epic poem entitled Radivilias sive de vita et moribus praeclarissime gestis immortalis memoriae illustrissimi principis Nicolai Radivili … libri quattuor, by Jan Radwan, was published in Vilnius in 1592.
The historical narration about the chief events connected with the Livonian War (1558-1582) when Poland and the Great Duchy of Lithuania were struggling against Ivan, the Terrible serves as a setting for a panegyric portrait of the main hero of the poem, Mikołaj Radziwiłł, the Red and his heroic deeds.
The author of Radivilias takes Radziwiłł to Helicon, place sacred to a succession of poetic memories, where he meets Musaeus. This part of the poem resembles Cicero’s Dream of Scipio, but we can see an essential difference between these two texts (Cicero - dream, dead ancestors, rational justification, Radwan - mythological motif, legendary poet Musaeus and poetry as a source of wisdom). Radwan is very realistic. He does not dream about return of the Golden Age, but emphasises the fragility of earthly glory and concentrates his attention upon the only true life - the life after death.
This article aims at discussing Radwan’s conception of the function of the Musaeus’ prophecy in the whole context of the poem. The attention is being given also to a prohetic significance of poetry

Cognitive Means Smart: Knowledge Saves Power
The previous chapters mainly examined methods to save energy at the mobile handset, either by using short-range cooperation between mobile terminals, or by performing smart vertical handovers between heterogeneous radio access technologies. These techniques can be beneficial to mobile systems, but they have to be performed based on informed decisions; meaning that mobile devices need to be cognitive. Modern devices already collect significant amounts of information, but they have limited capability to exploit such context/information, and handover decisions are merely based on signal strength, or are network controlled and based on network load. In this chapter, we aim to go beyond the state-of-the-art by envisioning mobile terminals with the capability to make informed decisions based on a reservoir of context information made available through context providers; namely what is referred to as smart phones. We include a survey of the current state of the art for context extraction and management in context-aware systems; besides listing the current context extraction techniques and research efforts, we pinpoint the important properties of good context extraction techniques. Thereafter, we discuss how context information can be exploited in energy saving when performing network or node discovery mechanism, by instructing the mechanisms to scan for certain nodes/networks which are known to be in the vicinity. Finally, we discuss the range of context information that can be used to make informed decisions to save power
