The postliberal politics of halal: new directions in the civilizing process?
This paper examines the emergence of postliberal halal politics in European societies. Building on research undertaken during the EU funded Dialrel project, it examines how the Malaysian state is inserting hegemonic claims into transnational space in order to dominate the international halal market. Moving beyond the idea of horizontally aligned networks of transnational power as the dominant framework for understanding social and economic change, the paper explores the complex interweaving of the large-scale macro processes and everyday micro practices underpinning the rise of Malaysia’s postliberal halal strategy. It is argued that the processes of social and economic differentiation emerging as a result of these processes have the potential to be an important step in the global civilizing process. In conclusion, the paper discusses the implication of these developments for figurational sociology
Women of Trachis
This new translation of Sophokles’ Women of Trachis is a living script in conversation with the past. Rachel Kitzinger, a Classicist, and Eamon Grennan, a poet, have captured the tones of ancient Greek in strong, swift English, making this translation suitable for a modern audience, whether as readers, listeners, or viewers. The unique addition of an audio recording of the text performed by Vassar College students contributes to the play's accessibility and vividness. Offering a picture both of domestic life and of the values and expectations that characterize Athenian men, Women of Trachis is a rich resource for those interested in gender roles in Greek antiquity

Why Lever Press?
My next book, tentatively titled Star Trek: Voyager: Critical and Historical Approaches to Ethics, Politics, and the End of the 1990s is now under contract at Lever Press (title definitely needs some work). This, for me, is very exciting. An open-access press with an innovative funding model – so there are no author-facing charges – I am really pleased to be working with Lever
Mental health needs in schools for emotional, behavioural and social difficulties
Within the UK, around 10% of children have mental health problems, but this is likely to be higher among certain specific populations. Children and young people attending provisions for social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) are a particularly vulnerable group whose mental health needs are under-researched. The authors, Latha Hackett, Louise Theodosiou, Freya Spicer and Rachel Lever of the Winnicott Centre, Manchester, Claire Blackburn who is a clinical psychologist and Caroline Bond of Manchester University conducted a study which involved all pupils in two schools for children with SEBD. The views of parents and teachers were sought for a sample of 71 children. The Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire and a supplementary questionnaire were used to gain a broad picture of the mental health needs of this group and the services required. The findings from these questionnaires indicate a much higher than national level of perceived mental health difficulties within this population. This piece of research highlights that both teachers and parents identified a need for professional support, from education, social care, health and other services. These findings have implications for future commissioning of services. © 2010 The Author(s). Journal compilation © 2010 NASEN
Justification of Lever Arrangement Parameters for Friction-type Traction Gear
AbstractThe paper reviews the current state and application potential of the friction-type traction gear as applied for rail-guided vehicles used in mining operations. It presents a design concept of a friction-type traction gear with a lever arrangement. A kinematic diagram of the lever arrangement is provided. Optimal geometry of the key elements of the lever arrangement is defined. The analytical model of the power load on the levers is developed. A correlation between the geometry of the key lever arrangement elements and the reduction rates was established with account for operating conditions of the traction vehicle. Design recommendations for friction-type traction gear are given based on the analysis of the obtained results
Quatre lettres inédites d'Ange Goudar au marquis de Sade
Ange Goudar : Four unpublished letters to the Marquis de Sade, presented by Maurice Lever.
Sade met Pierre-Ange Goudar, writer and adventurer, in 1775 during his flight to Italy after the "little girls" affair. An exchange of letters followed ; four of them, from the Sade family archives, are published here. Goudar expresses his opinions of Rome, Naples and Florence, his reflections on Cardinal Bernis and the Count of Saint-Germain, and speaks about his wife Sarah and his own writings. These unpublished pages reveal a hitherto totally unknown literary friendship between the author of Justine and another libertine called Goudar.Lever Maurice. Elements: Building Vocabulary on the Lever Harp through Global Harp Traditions and Art Forms
The Scottish lever harp is an instrument founded in an ancient history, but a relatively recently reconstructed tradition. From its modern conception, the lever harp has been a synthesis of multiple influences, invention, and creativity. Today, harp playing in Scotland is an expanding and evolving tradition. This paper seeks to draw inspiration from and add to the work of contemporary harpists by exploring ways of developing vocabulary for the instrument.
In the first section, the project investigates connections between different harp and harp- related traditions around the world. It looks at their history, cultural context and important players, alongside analysing excerpts of their music through transcriptions.
In the second section, the transcriptions are synthesised through the lens of the elements of art: line, shape, form, space, texture, value and colour. It also draws on practice routines learned during the year at Berklee Valencia, from teachers, mentors and classmates. Bringing all this together, the paper sets out a creative practice framework for the lever harp. It explores ways of using this new language in context.
The final section reflects on what has been learned through the project, and imagines future pathways: including creative projects, pedagogical methods and practice-based research.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-contemporary-performance/1261/thumbnail.jp
Learning to build sustainable communities: an interdependency network perspective
This paper explores the production of sustainable communities from an interdependency network perspective (Newton, 2001). Drawing on fieldwork that examined how planners worked collaboratively with other professionals to address the challenges of delivering New Labour’s Growth Point Initiative, the paper fuses insights from Actor Network Theory with Figurational Sociology to examine the requirements of the skills agenda for building sustainable communities (ODPM, 2004). Through an exploration of the ways in which planners adapted their working practice to facilitate the dual task of delivering growth and sustainable development, we argue that the learning and skills agenda is problematic for understanding how new knowledge and learning emerges
[[alternative]]The Effectiveness of Learning Lever Principle on the Ability of Elementary School Students' Judgment on Simple Machines.
[[abstract]]Investigated was the effectiveness of two different teaching materials on students’ judgment of simple machines. There were 131 sixth graders involved. Four classes from two teachers were randomly assigned into two groups. The teaching material with lever principle was taught to the experimental group. The material from textbook was taught to the controlled group. All subjects completed pre- post-, and deferring-test through the author designed ‘Test of understanding of simple machines’. The teaching material with lever principle was developed by the researcher and had been reviewed by one science educator and two elementary school science teachers. The test had been reviewed by three science educators and two elementary school science teachers. The reliability (a) of pre- post- and deferring test were .69, .74 and .74 respectively. The results indicated that the effectiveness of the two different teaching materials was not significant on the post-test. The achievement of experimental group was significantly(p<.05) better than the controlled group on three types of lever, pulley, block and tackle on the deferring test which was given to students one month later. The misconceptions which could be improved by both teaching materials were as follows: 1.the seesaw would be balanced when the weights of two persons were the same;2.students’ judgments of simple machines were based on the convenience, the direction of force exerting, the weight of the objects, the circles of hand’s moving and object’s moving;3.students’ judgment of the weight of the box was based on it’s height to the ground;4. fixed pully caused the pully force-saving or force-wasting. The misconception hard to improve was the lighter of the person’s weight, the closer to the pivot. The misconceptions hold by the experimental group were:1.students viewed the distance of hand’s moving as the distance from hand to pivot and the distance of objects moving as the distance from object to pivot;2.pivot must be on the center. The misconception which held by the controlled group was that they viewed the distance from hand to pivot as the distance of hand’s moving and the distance from object to pivot as the distance of objects moving. The study suggested that the lever principle and applications of tools in daily life should be included in textbooks.
