Discerning Ways to Better Support Hispanic Students from Low SES Backgrounds at Brophy College Preparatory
abstract: ABSTRACT
As a ninth-grade English teacher at Brophy College Preparatory Academy, I always looked toward the end of the school year with a certain amount of anticipation and trepidation. The anticipation celebrated students who had successfully completed their freshman year; whereas the trepidation resulted from the end-of-year memo indicating which students had chosen not to return to Brophy next year. Unfortunately, the latter group included a disproportionate number of Hispanic students from low-SES backgrounds. Given Brophy valued diversity and the terrific abilities of these students, an innovation was devised to foster development of ‘school-navigation’ skills to assist students in adapting to the social and academic demands of the school.
The intervention was rooted in several theoretical frameworks including Bourdieu’s (1977) Cultural Capital Perspective, McMillan and Chavis’ (1986) Sense of Community Theory, and Duckworth’s (2007) Grit Framework. Sixteen freshmen and four 12th-grade mentors participated in the study. The 12-week innovation incorporated four topics—transitioning to high school, learning about strategies for academic success, becoming involved in school culture and community, and working more effectively with teachers. Each topic was considered in a 3-week cycle. During week 1, students participated in a large group discussion about the topic led by the researcher. Subsequently, they wrote in journals to reflect on the topic. During week 2, four small groups of four freshmen and one senior, mentor met to consider the topics. Mentors led discussions and also shared how they had coped with the topic. Again, freshmen wrote in journals. In week 3, freshmen met in a large group with the researcher and shared their reflections and their experiences. In this context, the freshmen learned from each other and realized they were all experiencing similar challenges that could be overcome with grit and a community to support them.
Qualitative results indicated freshmen developed a sense of community, learned to respond in positive ways to failure, and developed academic and social school-navigation skills. Freshmen and mentors became tightly knit communities, texting each other with questions coming from freshmen and responses from mentors. The discussion focused on how the theoretical frameworks were useful in understanding the results.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 201
"Literární dvojakost v metafikční próze: Nin, H.D., Quin, Brophy a Acker."
Závěrečná práce zkoumá díla pěti autorek z dvacátého století, které využívají fenomén literární dvojakostí: H.D., Anaïs Nin, Ann Quin, Brigid Brophy a Kathy Acker. Autorky můžeme rozdělit do třech skupin. Druhou skupinu tvoří Quin a Brophy z počátku druhé polovin dvacátého století, jejichž díla přímo odrážejí změny vyvolané feministickým hnutím. Díla svojí podstatou otevřeně zpochybňují a odmítají patriarchální struktury, které ženy omezují. Acker, jako představitelka třetí generace, vnímá omezování práv žen jako sociální problém. Její sociálně-politická kritika vyjádřená punkovými romány dává do popředí okrajové sociální skupiny. Diskutované romány jsou metafikčný, což...The thesis explores five twentieth-century female authors, who incorporate the phenomenon of literary doubling in their novels: H.D., Anaïs Nin, Ann Quin, Brigid Brophy and Kathy Acker. They can be divided into three groups. The first group is represented by H.D. and Nin, writing in the first half of the twentieth century. They are modernists whose autobiographic fiction is influenced by the developments of psychoanalysis. While psychoanalysis is a continuous source of inspiration for them, they begin noticing its elements of repression and chauvinism. The second group consists of Quin and Brophy, whose fiction directly reflects the changes that were happening on the feminist front. Their creative writing openly challenges and rejects the patriarchal structures that constrain it. Acker, as a representative of the third generation, sees the oppression of women as an example of social oppression on a larger scale. A socio-political critique, her punk novels focus on centralization of marginal social groups. There is doubling happening on various levels in the novels: doubling of real personages as characters, appearance of the author as a character, doubling among the characters, bipolarity of gender, ambiguity of language and meaning, etc. The purpose is to emphasize and draw attention to certain...Ústav anglofonních literatur a kulturDepartment of Anglophone Literatures and CulturesFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art
Postmodernita hledá postgender: Brophy, Winterson a Place
Práce nicméně zůstává zakotvena na poli literární kritiky, neboť jejím hlavním zájmem...Postmodernity's Search for Postgender: Bropy, Winterson and Place (Abstract) The thesis examines three formally very diverse texts published in 1969, 1993 and 2013 respectively that creatively approach and subvert the gender binary: Brigid Brophy's In Transit, Jeanette Winterson's Written on the Body and Vanessa Place's Boycott. Based on Jean-François Lyotard's conception of postmodernism as modernism in a constantly nascent state, the author advances a hypothesis of "postgender." This however does not mean overcoming gender for good (as it is sometimes understood, for example by Rosi Braidotti), but as a structural momentum, a possibility of subversion at the heart of any gender schema and currently therefore of genderism, i.e. the belief that gender is necessarily binary and that aspects of our gender are inherently linked to our sex assigned at birth. Apart from feminist theory and literary criticism, the thesis also touches on the field of transgender studies, psychoanalysis, philosophy of history and most importantly the work of Jacques Derrida. In so doing it tries to articulate the notion of postgender as part and parcel of the condition of postmodernity and a culmination of the modern split of the subject, leading to a certain cultural gender turn during the 1990s. The work nevertheless remains...Department of Anglophone Literatures and CulturesÚstav anglofonních literatur a kulturFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art

The Dutch Dukeout: Honoring an Everyday Hero
abstract: The "Dutch Dukeout" is a memorial, community engagement venture founded by Scott Fitzgerald and Sam Minton. The event was also supported and facilitated through the help of a third party member, Dylan Bryant. The "Dutch Dukeout" will continue annually, as an opportunity for Brophy College Preparatory alumni and current students to come together and connect. This venture also exists to celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Fr. Harry "Dutch" Olivier, a former, prominent faculty member of Brophy. Additionally, the "Dutch Dukeout" aims to raise money to support the Brophy Scholarship Foundation, a resource for current Brophy students to offset the financial burden it costs to attend the prominent college preparatory. Foremost, the "Dutch Dukeout" flag football tournament provides a powerful way for Brophy Alumni to reconnect with their school. By communicating and participating with graduates from various classes, alumni have an opportunity to provide valuable life lessons and share personal stories with the youth, as well as bond over their shared experience at Brophy. For a school that is able to continually develop community leaders and social activists, the "Dutch Dukeout" provides a platform for collaboration and inspiration for everyone who participates. By raising money to support the Brophy Scholarship Foundation and providing an opportunity for alumni to engage in their community, the "Dutch Dukeout" is an event that truly embodies Fr. Olivier's values and beliefs. This thesis report documents the ideas, work and efforts that were completed to launch and then ensure the success and longevity of the venture. It also serves as an example for future social entrepreneurs who aim to make a difference in communities of their own

Restoring freshwater wetlands in the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve: links between water table elevation, soils, and plant communities in restored, altered, and undisturbed wetlands
This study investigated soil characteristics, hydrology and plant communities at three freshwater wetland sites within the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (South Slough NERR), in Coos Bay, OR. The study was designed to address key questions about the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on wetland hydrology and soil characteristics; the recovery of marsh soils and wetland hydrology after restoration actions; and the relationships between wetland hydrology, soils, and wetland plant communities. Project data were collected at one undisturbed freshwater wetland site and two disturbed freshwater wetland sites - one recently restored and one not yet restored - all within the South Slough NERR.Introduction -- Project goals -- Products -- Background -- Study sites -- Hypotheses -- Summary of results -- Methods -- Experimental design -- Sampling design -- Field methods -- Analytical methods -- Results and discussion -- Hydrology -- Soils -- Vegetation -- Conclusions : ecological linkages -- Hypotheses -- Recommendations -- The "big questions" -- Management and restoration recommendations -- Continuation of this study's monitoring -- Additional analyses of this study's results -- Further monitoring and research -- Additional project benefits -- Education -- Liaison -- Literature cited -- Summary tables -- Plant species list -- Plant community list -- Figures -- Data tablesprepared for: South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve ; prepared by: Laura Brophy, Green Point ConsultingTitle from PDF title page (viewed on January 5, 2023)This archived document is maintained by the State Library of Oregon as part of the Oregon Documents Depository Program.
