    Farm Forestry for Green & Gold: Australian experiences of linking biodiversity to commercial forestry.

    This publication his arisen from an 18-month project funded by the Commonwealth’s Natural Heritage Trust through Environment Australia’s Bushcare Program during 2001-‘02. The project brought together are range of research scientists, extension officers, extension officers, project officers and others interested in exploring how forestry can combine commercial and biodiversity goals – a ‘win win’ situation for forest growers and the environment. Many landholders and forest growers around Australia are already making forestry achieve this ‘win win’ goal. This publication has profiled 8 of these landholders and growers, so we can learn from their experiences and the latest research on native biodiversity. We felt it important to have the experiences of the 8 case studies told with, and by, extension officers who work closely with the landholders and growers.     Outmigration and Land-Use Change: A Case Study from the Middle Hills of Nepal

    Outmigration has become a key livelihood strategy for an increasing number of rural households, which in turn has a profound effect on land management. Studies to date have mainly focused on migrant households, and there is limited literature on the differences in land management practices of migrant and nonmigrant households. This article drew on a current study to explore how outmigration affects land management practices in the context of rapidly changing rural communities and economics in the middle hills of Nepal. The data were collected in Lamjung District in western Nepal using a mixed-method approach. We found that underutilization of farmland is a more prominent phenomenon than land abandonment, with rural communities moving to less intensive farming. Importantly, the increasing underutilization of farmland is not just occurring among migrant households. There are a range of complex factors which influence land-use decisions and the subsequent outcomes for landscapes. A high risk of food insecurity in Nepal is likely to be exacerbated if the current trajectory of underutilization and abandonment of farmland continues. A suite of policy tools that can be selectively applied depending on the local context may be more effective than broad-brush national policies in tackling the underlying causes faced by rural communities.This research was funded by an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship for the first author

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     There is growing support, both within Australia and internationally, for substantial changes to the way rural land - particularly farmland - is managed, in an effort to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas abatement is part of the pressure that is redefining agricultural practices and the nature and extent of forestry in Australia in an attempt to meet international obligations (targets) defined in the Kyoto Protocol. While a considerable investment has been made to improve understanding of the processes of carbon emission and sequestration in the land sector, comparatively little effort has been devoted to understanding the social dimension of the massive changes that some expect landholders will have to make. In broad terms, the key social issues relate to the nature, scale and rate of change by individual landholders, geographical communities and industry sectors, but a full understanding of the key social issues is yet to be attained. For instance, many farming families and agricultural industries do not have the social and economic capacity to make widespread changes to current practices, even if alternative practices are highly desirable. Furthermore, there is great variation in the feasible options available to individual farming families, regional communities and rural sectors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions - forced change may see this disparity increase. This paper contributes to the debate in favour of carbon sequestration by providing information about appropriate and feasible change which is sensitive to the social context of rural Australia

    Forestry is being redefined to meet a broad range of economic, environmental and social expectations in many countries, including Australia. A notable feature of this process is the increasing importance given to farm forestry by industry and government. However, farm forestry is still in its infancy in Australia and research into the potential dimensions of this land-use and the possible outcomes is only at a preliminary stage. Given unfavourable soils and low rainfall in much of Australia, and uncertain long-term economic returns in traditional forestry regions, it is understandable that adoption of farm forestry has been slow, and viable self-sustaining regional farm forestry industries are still emerging. As landholders and industrial processors contribute to farm forestry development, it is reasonable to expect diverse farm forestry industries to emerge - with diversity in terms of the scale of operations, capital investment, biophysical and socio-economic elements, the nature and extent of involvement by various stakeholder groups, and the outcomes for those involved. In an attempt to understand the socio-economic outcomes of farm forestry for regional communities, four scenarios have been constructed of likely regional industries and the types of landholders likely to be involved. While it is reasonable that grower, industry and government stakeholders will have different expectations of farm forestry, these need not necessarily be incompatible. It is hoped that through better understanding of the possible socio-economic outcomes of regional farm forestry industries, strategies can be developed to ensure sufficient common ground emerges to satisfy the multiple objectives of the different stakeholder groups
