High-j proton and neutron alignments in gamma-soft Ru-101
The near-yrast structure of the weakly deformed, "transitional," nucleus Ru-101 has been investigated using the fusion-evaporation reaction Zr-96(Be-9,4n)Ru-101 at a beam energy of approximately 44 MeV. The experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations using the cranked Woods-Saxon-Strutinsky method. The yrast positive-parity structures are observed to undergo a backbend, consistent with the crossing of an aligned (nuh(11/2))(2) configuration. The h(11/2)([550]1/2(-)) intruder band configuration is extended to a tentative spin/parity of (47/2(-)) and excitation energy of more than 9 MeV. This structure exhibits properties which can be explained by the rotational alignment of a pair of midshell g(9/2) protons, in contrast to the behavior observed in the heavier N=57, odd-A isotones where the predicted proton crossing is delayed in favor of neutron alignments. The effect of static gamma deformation on the theoretically predicted alignment properties is investigated by means of the cranked shell model. The observed band crossings are found to be consistent with a significant triaxial rigidity, persistent into the medium-spin regime.Physics, NuclearSCI(E)9ARTICLE2null6
Spin dependence of K mixing, strong configuration mixing, and electromagnetic properties of Hf-178
The combined data of two Coulomb excitation experiments has verified the purely electromagnetic population of the K-pi=4(+),6(+),8(-), and 16(+) rotational bands in Hf-178 via 2 <=nu <= 14 K-forbidden transitions, quantifying the breakdown of the K-selection rule with increasing spin in the low-K bands. The gamma-, 4(+), and 6(+) bands were extended, and four new states in a rotational band were tentatively assigned to a previously known K-pi=0(+) band. The quasiparticle structure of the 6(+) (t(1/2)=77 ns) and 8(-) (t(1/2)=4 s) isomer bands were evaluated, showing that the gyromagnetic ratios of the 6(+) isomer band are consistent with a pure pi(7)/(+)(2)[404],pi(5)/(+)(2)[402] structure. The 8(-) isomer band at 1147 keV and the second 8(-) band at 1479 keV, thought to be predominantly nu(7)/(-)(2)[514],nu(9)/(+)(2)[624] and pi(9)/(-)(2)[514],pi(7)/(+)(2)[404], respectively, are mixed to a degree approaching the strong-mixing limit. Based on measured < K-pi=16(+)parallel to E2 parallel to K-pi=0(+)> matrix elements, it was shown that heavy-ion bombardment could depopulate the 16(+) isomer at the similar to 1% level, although no states were found that would mediate photodeexcitation of the isomer via low-energy x-ray absorption.Physics, NuclearSCI(E)13ARTICLE3null7
Intrinsic state lifetimes in (103)Pd and (106,107)Cd
The mean-lifetimes, tau, of various medium-spin excited states in (103)Pd and (106,107)Cd have been deduced using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift technique and the Differential Decay Curve Method. In (106)Cd, the mean-lifetimes of the I(pi)=12(+) state at E(x)=5418 keV and the I(pi)=11(-) state at E(x)=4324 keV have been deduced as 11.4(17)ps and 8.2(7)ps, respectively. The associated beta(2) deformation within the axially-symmetric deformed rotor model for these states are 0.14(1) and 0.14(1), respectively. The beta(2) deformation of 0.14(1) for the I(pi)=12(+) state in (106)Cd compares with a predicted beta(2) value from total Routhian surface (TRS) calculations of 0.17. In addition, the mean-lifetimes of the yrast I(pi) = 15(-)/2 states in (103)Pd (at E(x)=1262 keV) and (107)Cd (at E(x)=1360 keV) have been deduced to be 31.2(44)ps and 31.4(17)ps, respectively, corresponding to beta(2) values of 0.16(1) and 0.12(1) assuming axial symmetry. Agreement with TRS calculations are good for (103)Pd but deviate for that predicted for (107)Cd.Physics, NuclearSCI(E)3ARTICLE6null7
beta(-)-delayed spectroscopy of neutron-rich tantalum nuclei: Shape evolution in neutron-rich tungsten isotopes
The low-lying structure of W-188,W-190,W-192 has been studied following beta decays of the neutron-rich mother nuclei Ta-188,Ta-190,Ta-192 produced following the projectile fragmentation of a 1-GeV-per-nucleon Pb-208 primary beam on a natural beryllium target at the GSI Fragment Separator. The beta-decay half-lives of Ta-188, Ta-190, and Ta-192 have been measured, with gamma-ray decays of low-lying states in their respective W daughter nuclei, using heavy-ion beta-gamma correlations and a position-sensitive silicon detector setup. The data provide information on the low-lying excited states in W-188, W-190, and W-192, which highlight a change in nuclear shape at W-190 compared with that of lighter W isotopes. This evolution of ground-state structure along the W isotopic chain is discussed as evidence for a possible proton subshell effect for the A similar to 190 region and is consistent with maximization of the gamma-softness of the nuclear potential around N similar to 116
