The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

In an era characterized by increasing globalization and pollution, carbon taxation is at the center of public attention. This thesis offers a multidimensional analysis of the intricate relationships between carbon tax, trade, growth, and financial development. It relies on various empirical methods, including Spatial Econometrics Models, Structural Decomposition Analysis, Multi-Regional Input-Output Model, General Equilibrium Model, Quantitative Trade Model, System and Difference Generalized Method of Moments. This thesis comprises four chapters that delve into diverse aspects of the complex interplay between economic activities, environmental outcomes, and pollution taxation considerations. Chapter 1 delves into the relationship between economic growth, bilateral trade flow, and geographical distance using a spatial dynamic panel data model. The findings underscore the significance of spatial dependence, emphasizing that a country's economic growth is influenced by the performance of its neighbors and trade partners, highlighting the importance of considering spatial effects in economic growth models. Chapter 2 explores the impact of carbon taxation on emissions embodied in trade, using multi-regional input-output tables for OECD and emerging countries. Employing structural decomposition analysis and spatial econometric models, we demonstrate that trade can transmit pollution to neighboring countries. This result emphasizes the need for coordinated regional tax policies to prevent an increase in emissions embodied in trade. Chapter 3 investigates the factors affecting pollution levels in Europe's manufacturing industry. We focus on how productivity, expenditure share, trade costs, and environmental regulations affect pollution levels in European countries' manufacturing industries. This chapter employs a general equilibrium model and quantitative trade model to showcase the role of environmental regulations in reducing pollution emissions, providing evidence of their effectiveness. Chapter 4 shifts the focus to financial development and environmental emissions in OECD countries. Using empirical methods, it uncovers nuanced associations between financial development and greenhouse gas emissions, emphasizing the complexity of these relationships. The chapter calls for proactive measures within financial markets and institutions to encourage environmentally responsible investments and transparency in environmental performance. This work underscores the necessity for coordinated policies and strategies on carbon taxation to address environmental challenges while sustaining economic growth in an interconnected world

    Natural Disasters Shocks on Trade

The history of the planet has always been marked by natural disasters. Nevertheless, their impacts on trade have been little explored. This thesis tries to bring to light the relationship between natural disasters and trade. A special attention was given to developing countries and their agricultural sector which is known to be particularly vulnerable to these shocks. The chapter 1 proposes to analyse the effect of natural disasters on total trade. We show that agricultural exports do not decrease ina systematic way in the aftermath of catastrophes. Therefore, the chapter 2 seeks to identify the transmission channels; and relies on bilateral trade models. We show that natural disasters affect agricultural exports through three mechanisms: a capability channel, a shipment channel and a preference channel. Finally, the chapter 3 explores the role played by drought in change of country‘s specialization. We show that a lack of precipitation leads to a change in exports at middle term

Global economy has been characterized by an increasing liberalization of capital markets in recent decades. This liberalization has led to an increase in international capital movements and international financial transactions. Due to the liberalization of capital movements and the opening up of domestic markets, Sub-Saharan African countries are increasingly experiencing substantial international capital inflows. In the 1980s, capital inflows to Sub-Saharan African countries were mainly composed by official development assistance and bank loans to public sectors. In recent years, the composition of these flows has changed to take the form of foreign direct investment and migrant remittances. In parallel with this increase of capital inflows, Sub-Saharan African countries are experiencing substantial capital flight. This thesis, which takes place in an economic context characterized by substantial growth in private capital flows in Sub-Saharan African countries, is organized into three chapters, aiming respectively to answer the following questions : What dynamic links exist between foreign direct investment inflows and domestic private investment ? To what extent does local financial development contribute to the efficient allocation of migrant remittances via domestic private investment ? How does weak banking and financial regulation influence capital flight ? The results of the first chapter show that foreign direct investment has little effect in the short term, but stimulates private investment in the long term. The results also show that foreign direct investment interacts with domestic public investment to reinforce these positive effects. The results also suggest that the impact of foreign direct investment on domestic private investment is stronger in diversified non-resource exporting countries than in countries mainly exporting natural resources. The results of the second chapter show, firstly, that remittances have a positive impact on private investment in the region. Secondly, the study shows that the marginal effect of remittances on investment decreases with countries' level of financial development. Migrant remittances have more impact in countries where the financial sector is underdeveloped, as they reduce credit constraints. The results of the third chapter indicate that the quality of banking regulation and supervision reduces the incentive of capital flight from Sub-Saharan African countries. More specifically, regulation of capital adequacy (by improving bank soundness), regulation of banking competition (by reducing bank concentration and the entry of foreign banks), have a negative impact on capital flight. The effect of banking regulation and supervision on reducing capital flight is particularly pronounced in countries without insurance schemes to protect bank deposits

In 2019, the Covid-19 health crisis profoundly disrupted the global economy, particularly international trade, due to restrictive measures that hindered local production and exchanges. This situation highlighted the importance of an effective healthcare system for economic stability, a consideration that is especially crucial for developing countries like those in Sub-Saharan Africa, where healthcare infrastructure is insufficient. A large-scale pandemic in this region could severely impact trade and investment. Therefore, it is essential to develop robust healthcare infrastructure to enhance economic resilience in the face of future crises. This thesis examines the impact of health crises on the trade of Sub-Saharan African countries. It highlights the beneficial effects of improving healthcare systems on the attractiveness of foreign direct investment and addresses the efficiency of public health systems. The thesis is organized into three chapters, each aimed at answering the following questions, respectively: How do epidemic-related restrictions affect bilateral trade between infected countries and their partners? What influence does a high-performance healthcare system have on the attractiveness of foreign direct investment? How can public health expenditures be efficiently managed in a context of budgetary constraints? Drawing on the case of the Ebola crisis using a gravity model, the first chapter highlights the negative impact of restrictions related to this epidemic on the exports of the affected West African countries, particularly on fresh products. Additionally, the findings show that when an epidemic is localized in a specific group of countries, the restrictions primarily affect exports without significantly impacting imports. These results underscore the detrimental effects on international trade of excessive restrictions that do not adhere to the World Health Organization's recommendations during health crises. Using a fixed-effects model, the second chapter demonstrates that countries with strong healthcare performance attract more foreign direct investment compared to those with fragile health systems. It also reveals investor reluctance to invest in countries heavily affected by malaria and HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, the quality of institutions appears to play a crucial role in the relationship between health performance and foreign direct investment. The data envelopment analysis approach in the third chapter demonstrates that most Sub-Saharan African countries are inefficient in managing public health expenditures. The increase in public debt and fiscal deficit negatively impacts this efficiency. However, a more detailed analysis indicates that the negative effects of public debt and fiscal deficit on the efficiency of public health expenditures are mitigated in countries that have adopted strict fiscal rules and demonstrate good public financial management

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
