Polycentric Monarchies: How Did Early Modern Spain and Portugal Achieve and Maintain a Global Hegemony?

    No full text
Having succeeded in establishing themselves in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, in the early 16th century Spain and Portugal became the first imperial powers on a worldwide scale. Between 1580 and 1640, when these two entities were united, they achieved an almost global hegemony, constituting the largest political force in Europe and abroad. Although they lost their political primacy in the 17th century, both monarchies survived and were able to enjoy a relative success until the early 19th century. The aim of this collection is to answer the question how and why their cultural and political legacies persist to date

The Vaaz family case, new Christian bankers (i.e., recently converted Hebrews) natives of Lisbon that moved to Naples at the end of the sixteenth century, is representative of the strategies of social assimilation in the context of the Catholic Monarchy. Retracing the parabola of the Vaaz family in Spanish Naples it becomes evident that a strong position in the world of finance was not enough to avoid the social collapse of a powerful family of bankers

Hombres y espacios. Circulación en la monarquía de España en la primera edad moderna

Since the last decades of the last century, studies on the Spanish monarchy have been enriched by new reflections and interest in the political and social dynamics that until then had been neglected, and thanks to the overcoming of historiographic paradigms linked to national realities. This new approach, which is linked to a dual perspective of local and international dimension, has given great importance to what is considered one of the aspects that characterized the Spanish Monarchy of the modern age: circulation, mobility and the transfer of knowledge. Despite the complex territorial articulation and wide geographical distances, the multiple "spaces" that attended the composition of the Spanish monarchy found the conjunction ring in the circulation of men, thus becoming, from isolated spaces, connected spaces

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
