No full textWe asked a series of questions to Luca Cobbe and Paola Rudan, authors of two books foregrounding the turning point of the 18th century by which, moving from the experience of the revolution, the structure of the constitution and configuration of government were deeply rethought. The two works, respectively about David Hume and Jeremy Bentham, contribute significantly to illuminate the way by which obedience has been reconsidered when society and opinion became the sources of political legitimation. This dialogue at distance clearly shows the presence of a plurality of constitutional registers which were necessary for the affirmation of the centrality of government in the era of the rising popular sovereignty

Woman: History and Critique of a Polemical Concept
No full textThe book follows the movements of the concept of “woman” from the Early modern to the post-colonial age, through the words of women who challenged its patriarchal definition. The concept of “woman” is doubly polemical. It affirms sexual difference as political difference, while denying the universal character of modern political concepts which represent the unity of the political and social order, exposing its fundamental division. At the same time, “woman” is a concept marked by differences ‒ of "race", class, culture ‒ that continually redetermine its content. To make the history of the concept of “woman” is thus to affirm a different perspective on history itself, a partial perspective that lays the groundwork for the feminist critique of the present

No full textThe essay analyzes the politicization of the concept of woman in Sarah Grimké’s political thought, turning it from a general signifier of oppression to the name of a universal possibility of liberation. In the first part, Grimké’s biblical exegesis is regarded as the doorway to a critique of the social and institutional articulation of the male domination. In the second part, her discourse is confronted with John Locke’s conception of the free individual, to show how the legal and moral analogy between slavery and the coverture allows her unveiling the patriarchal foundation of the American democracy. In the third part, Grimké’s call for abolitionist activism is regarded as the first step towards a collective – rather than individualistic – conception of emancipation, and
an understanding of equality as the concrete practice that questions the distinction of the «appropriate spheres». Lastly, Grimké’s latest unpublished writings are read to highlight how theology and evolutionism are combined in the perspective of presenting woman as a divine agent, with the capacity of generating something new, which is not already subjected to the existing relations of domination

No full textIl saggio rilegge l’opera di Engels mostrando che il rapporto che egli stabilisce tra fatti biologici e sociali va letto nella prospettiva evoluzionistica che egli abbraccia perseguendo l’obiettivo di fondare positivamente una prognosi politica. Definendo e praticando attraverso Morgan una «storia dell’origine», Engels ha la pretesa di fondare un canone scientifico che qui viene discusso non per riattivare dibattiti dottrinari ormai estinti, ma per mostrare che la storicizzazione della famiglia è per lui funzionale a postulare un passato preistorico segnato dall’assenza del dominio maschile e perciò capace di prefigurare un avvenire liberato dalla proprietà privata. In questa cornice, il patriarcato è per Engels un effetto, una mera derivazione, dell’emergenza della proprietà privata come criterio ordinativo della costituzione sociale, il che significa anche che l’antagonismo tra i sessi, che alla sua altezza storica le donne stavano già praticando in forma non solo singolare, ma collettiva e organizzata, finisce per essere politicamente irrilevante e destinato a risolversi in virtù dell’evoluzione della produzione sociale. Ciò nonostante, o proprio per questo, il difetto dell’Origine è stato per il femminismo fonte di problemi e risorsa polemica, diventando parte di una storia e di una teoria politica che hanno sfidato e sfondato continuamente la gabbia della canonizzazione

No full textThis introduction provides a close reading of Simón Bolívar’s Discurso de Angostura (1819) as an attempt to understand the relationship between revolution and constitution within the frame of the civil war which inflamed Venezuela after the declaration of independence. While constitution is usually conceived by modern political thought as the act which puts an end to revolution by formalizing the constituent will of the people, in South America it emerges as a device to realize the preconditions of the revolution itself
