Lucy Faulkner and the 'ghastly grin': re-working the title page illustration to Goblin Market
An article that recovers the work of the craftswoman Lucy Faulkner Orrinsmith. It demonstrates her role in the re-cutting of the title page illustration to Christina Rossetti’s poem ‘Goblin Market’ designed by D. G. Rossetti in 1862-5
Religious intellectuals : the poetic gravity of Emily Brontë and Christina Rossetti
This thesis examines the writing of Emily Brontë and Christina Rossetti in terms of its
expression of religious culture and belief. It is my argument that Brontë and Rossetti
experienced religion as intellectuals, questioning and exploring doctrine and dogma neither
as sentimental lady Christians nor dismissive, secular critics. I contend that by close
reading their poetry, the genre both women privileged as most appropriate for the
consideration of religious matters, the reader may trace the sermons and theological works
they read. Moreover, their writing, I suggest, evinces their intellectual response to
theological, ecclesiological and ecclesiastical developments that took place in the
nineteenth century. I thus label Brontë and Rossetti 'religious intellectuals,' a phrase
suggestive of their intense understanding of, rather than their mild acquaintance with,
religious debate. Many women writing within the nineteenth century found that religion
granted them a field within which to freely read and research, but were denied the
professional title of 'theologian.' Brontë and Rossetti are thus examples of a wider
phenomenon wherein women encountered religion like scholars, one disregarded by current
criticism unable as it is to categorize a female activity simultaneously religious and
intellectual. I use Brontë and Rossetti as examples of what I call the 'religious intellectual'
because they represent different sides of this classification. Where Brontë struggled away
from her Methodist background, serving as a cultural commentator on its enthusiastic
belief-system, Rossetti forged a scholarly identity as a late member of the High Church
Oxford Movement. Both poets, I contend, wrote about religion in order to signal their
intellectual ability. I conclude that Brontë's interest in Methodism and Rossetti's
fascination with Tractarianism reveals the poets to be both independent of family pressures
and false consciousness, and fully engaged with a subject central to their age

Biagio Rossetti come pretesto
For Zevi, the study of Rossetti’s work was a decisive episode in his critical activity in terms of chronology and literary genre. It is precisely this last aspect that seems to interest Zevi most, who uses Rossetti to develop the tools of an expressly visual criticism, translating the similar research of Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti and using Rossetti as a general test for subsequent readings – this time by several authors – of other masters of architecture such as, for example, Michelangelo. The critical sketches, the genre of the architecture exhibition, and a monograph that had the ambition of becoming an indication of the method for contemporary events are just some of the critical methods that Zevi tested through Rossetti with the aim of “inserting” architecture and its history into the more general framework of culture and politics.
For Zevi, Rossetti was a pretext for finding a remedy for what he considered to be one of the most significant problems that afflicted architecture and, consequently, caused its isolation: “most educated people do not know how to see architecture”
Pliocene-Pleistocene HT-LP metamorphism during multiple granitic intrusions in the southern branch of the Larderello geothermal field (southern Tuscany, Italy)
This work presents the results from a multidisciplinary study carried out in the southern branch of the Larderello geothermal field (Travale-Montieri area) that is based on the integration of field data with information of the deeper structures as derived from interpretation of seismic reflection profiles and the P-T-t history of the metamorphic substratum as reconstructed from borehole data. Our data document that the structural and metamorphic signature of the metamorphic substratum is chiefly related to a prograde HT/LP metamorphic overprint, spanning in age from c. 2.8 to 0.7 Ma. The metamorphic climax was attained within the K-feldspar zone and equilibrated at P-T conditions of about 650°C (garnet-biotite thermometry) and 0.2 GPa (andalusite stability field). We interpret these new findings as the evidence of Pliocene-Pleistocene thermal metamorphism associated with multiple granite intrusions at shallow levels in the crust. These results (i) add strength to the interpretations emphasising the role of Neogene thermal metamorphism on the tectono-metamorphic signature of the basement rocks found at depth in the Larderello geothermal field; and (ii) provide insights on the thermal structures of the crustal section hosting the geothermal field and on the modes through which the long-lived positive thermal anomaly operated in Southern Tuscany

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with Rossetti fundoplication: long-term (5-year) follow-up
Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including erosive esophagitis, is highly prevalent in the obese population. Barrett's esophagus is the consequence of untreated GERD. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most frequently performed bariatric procedures. This study presents results after 5 years of follow-up of combined LSG and Rossetti fundoplication for the treatment of GERD, esophagitis, and Barrett's esophagus in patients with morbid obesity. Objective: To evaluate long-term results after sleeve gastrectomy with Rossetti fundoplication. Setting: Public university hospital in Italy. Methods: Since January 2015, more than 450 patients with obesity underwent sleeve gastrectomy with a Rossetti fundoplication procedure as part of prospective studies underway at our center performed by 4 different expert bariatric surgeons. Currently, 127 patients have a follow-up of 5 years or more. Results: Mean patient age was 42.9 ± 10.3 years, and mean body mass index was 42.4 ± 6.1 kg/m2. In total, 74.8% of patients were experiencing GERD before surgery. In 29 of 127 patients (22.8%), preoperative gastroscopy showed signs of esophagitis and/or Barrett's esophagus. In particular, 23 of 127 patients (18.1%) had grade A esophagitis, 2 of 127 (1.6%) had grade B, 2 of 127 (1.6%) had grade C, and 2 of 127 (1.6%) had Barrett's esophagus. Mean operative time was 51 ± 21 minutes. No intraoperative complications or conversions were reported. A regular postoperative course was seen in 91.3% of patients. Sixty months after surgery, more than 95% of patients did not experience any reflux symptoms. Percent total weight loss at follow-up was comparable with that with sleeve gastrectomy. Endoscopic follow-up demonstrated improvement of esophagitis lesions (including Barrett's esophagus) present in the preoperative setting. Conclusion: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with Rossetti fundoplication is well tolerated, feasible, and safe in patients with obesity, providing adequate weight loss results and complete resolution of clinical signs of GERD. We have recorded an improvement in esophagitis lesions present at preoperative gastroscopy and complete resolution of Barrett's esophagus within 5 years of follow-up
The charge distribution on metal-bonded cyclopentadienyl rings from infrared intensities
The IR intensities of the C-H vibrational modes of a hydrocarbon fragment bonded to a metal atom are a useful probe to evaluate the charge distribution on the fragment. The values of R, the ratio of the overall C-H bending and C-H stretching IR intensities of the cyclopentadienyl ligand, are reported for several organometallic complexes containing the h5-C5H5-M unit. The parameter R is related to several properties of the complexes, such as the ionic charge, the nature of the metal and of the ancillary ligands, the C-H bending force constant and to the solid-state structure
