New service development in capital goods manufacturers: empirical evidence from an Italian sample and proposal of a conceptual framework
Since Italian capital goods manufacturers are still strongly product-oriented while current trends are pushing traditionally manufacturers towards the servitization of their business, practitioners in this sector call for support in approaching the service innovation in a more clearly defined way; this could prevent them to miss a new service innovation opportunity or to fail in developing new services.
In this respect, the aim of the research presented in this paper is to evaluate the state-of-the-art of the development of the New Service Development (NSD) process in the capital goods sector, both through a literature review and trough the analysis of qualitative case studies of a sample of 23 Italian companies.
From the analysis it has emerged that there is the lack of defined models for NSD both in literature and in practice. Reasons could be related to the difficulties in modeling such a process within this manufacturing context since usually industrial service providers customize service offering according to individual customer needs so that new services are developed on a single base and not in a systematic way.
For these reasons, starting from the analysis of the state-of-the-art, a conceptual framework and related guidelines have been developed to support practitioners in improve the effectiveness and the efficiency of the innovation process taking into consideration the peculiarities of the reference sector. The research is still at its first steps, so further work is called for to support those companies in approaching the service innovation

A decision-making model to drive the servitization process in the capital goods sector
Nowadays, offering PSSs (Product Service Systems) has a significant potential value for capital goods manufacturers, but several challenges arise in undertaking the servitization process. So there are some open research questions that call for further studies to fill the literature gap ([14]; [4]). This paper aims at answering the question: “how can traditional manufacturing firms make the transition to servitized organizations?”. A decision making model that could support Italian capital goods manufacturers to identify the right strategy to choose to achieve the desired level of transition has been presented. The model has been developed by matching literature models with data collected by means of an empirical investigation involving a sample of 22 Italian manufacturing companies belonging to this sector
ICT tools to support capital goods manufacturers in the service management: trends and opportunities from the analysis of an Italian sample
Starting from the assumption that the ICT support can be considered as an enabling factor for the servitization of manufacturing, this paper investigates the ICT and web 2.0 support in improving the efficiency of the service provision in the Capital goods sector, taking evidence from the analysis of an Italian sample.
In the reference sector, an efficient management of the after-sale service is hard to achieve due to the high level of collaboration and integration within the different organizational units, IT systems and processes deployed along the service supply chain. For these reasons, a tactical tool to support practitioners in this sector in the adoption of the right technological solutions able to im-prove the management of their service business could be considered of great relevance. The research presented in this paper is a first step towards the de-velopment of this tool being based on the analyzed sample only. Further vali-dation and generalization is thus called for
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
