Liquid Times - Newness and Uncertainty: An Innovative AAU PBL Response

    No full text
This chapter puts forward a Holistic Problem Based Learning (HPBL) model, that integrates research-based teaching and learning and teaching-based research, and re-defines the PBL process. It builds on the Aalborg University PBL model that has been part of the Aalborg University DNA since the university inception in 1974 and the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy to redefine the PBL process. I reflect on my personal experience in engaging with PBL from the moment I started my full time position at Aalborg University in 2010. Before discussing HPBL, I set the stage by a review of the ‘liquid times’ we live in, highlighting the impact of newness and uncertainty – quintessential by-products of these ‘liquid times’ – on collective behaviour, free will, ascertaining what the future holds for our graduates, and conjecturing how to mitigate these challenges. As part of the HPBL discussion, I introduce the basic principles, pillars a PBL model rests on. I conclude by underlining pointers for future research, policy and practice

Preliminary analysis of snow features in the central Apennines (Italy) during the last twenty-five years. Because of the numerous complexities involved in measuring snow depth in middle and high-mountain environments, such as altitude, topography exposition, variability on direction and intensity of winds, and other local factors, a global synthesis of such as campaign is not a simple matter. This characterization is even more difficult in the chain of the Apennines, that show absolutely specific geographic and climatic features, extending from north to south at latitudes between 38 e 45 degrees, between two different marine basins, characterized of their completely different by breadth and depth. The Corpo Forestale delo Stato - Servizio Meteomont runs for about 30 years, a very extensive network of weather stations manual-type snow gauge. Aim of this study is to characterize the snow climatology in the central sector of the chain - characterized by the presence of the largest and high massifs (Gran Sasso, Maiella, Sibillini, Laga) - or we also extend the glacier and morainedammed lake southernmost of Europe.Nivometric seasonal trends remark many surprising and interesting signals, especially if proposed as indicators on the evolution on the environment of the Mediterranean mountai

Sociology of Knowledge Perspective on Entrepreneurship

    No full text
This chapter addresses one of the enduring questions in sociology of knowledge: how is it possible that subjective meanings become objective facticities? It adopts this question to understand the entrepreneurship phenomenon, and, more specifically, to understand how new business or venture ideas and new sectors or industries (as subjective meanings) are legitimated and institutionalized (become socially established as reality). Building on Berger and Luckmann’s Treatise in the Sociology of Knowledge, the chapter suggests an alternative order objectivation of meaning to understand entrepreneurship phenomenon. Specifically, it conjectures considering legitimation as a first-order objectivation of meaning, whereas institutionalization constitutes a second-order objectivation of meaning when researching entrepreneurship. For this purpose, the chapter introduces the legitimation typology to frame the discussion around the process of creation, legitimation, and institutionalization of newness. It concludes by proposing a grand theory of legitimation
