Mothers and Piqueteras: Argentinian Women during the Food Crisis, between Participation and Role-Ambivalence
This article will explore the dynamics of gender equality in food conflicts occurred in Argentina during the crisis of 2001. The empirical material consists of interviews and observations gathered in an investigation about the piquetero movement (MP) of Cordoba. Women's participation in these forms of politics and mutual mobilization was decisive, though not adequately recognized. We will focus in particular on the role played by women during the food crisis in Argentina, in the context of community work. This expression refers to various forms of work, volunteer or paid, carried out for the benefit of the local communities and neighborhoods, in a perspective that fostered the development of the local community. According to our interpretation, the involvement of women in the community work of the MP has had a crucial effect on the reconfiguration of gender relations in Argentina. After a brief historical presentation and an introduction to the case study, we will try to demonstrate how the conflictual dialectics participation vs. reintegration can be read in view of the structural ambivalence related to gender roles (Merton 1976; Calabrò 1991). And how Argentinian women managed to improve social condition of marginalised people, acting on gender roles’ ambivalences.Fil: Eynard, Martin. Pragmatism, Religion and Ethics: A Review Essay. H. Deuser et al, The Varieties of Transcendence: Pragmatism and the Theory of Religion, New York: Fordham University Press, 2016; N. Brunsveld, The Many Faces of Religious Truth: Hilary Putnam’s Pragmatic Pluralism on Religion, Leuven: Peeters, 2017; D.B. Heney, Toward a Pragmatist Metaethics, London: Routledge, 2016
his paper uses the stimuli of the three books listed above to introduce the reader to a socio-philosophical perspective rather not considered in the European debate, despite its importance for the development of American sociology (symbolic interactionism, the School of Chicago, R.K. Merton, among the others) and for a variety of European scholars. A second objective is to understand how the problems pragmatist philosophers encounter in analysing the religious phenomena could help understanding the need for a multifactorial and multilevel explanation of religion and ethics. Finally, in the discussion, the author critically enlightens the need to avoid collapsing morality into religion — as sometimes pragmatists do — and extends and reframes Hans Joas’ appropriation of Mead and Durkheim in his pragmatist approach to religion and morality
Interactional Anomie? Imaging Social Distance after COVID-19: A Goffmanian Perspective
Social distance is a central issue in the institutional communication about COVID-19. The expression has often been improperly used as a synonym for physical distance. In this article, I will compare how international agencies have used the concept in their documents with Erving Goffman's sociological theory on social distance. The Canadian sociologist is, in fact, the author who has explored the sociological aspects of social distance most deeply. In the third section, summarising Goffman's work, I will try to define a possible research agenda to be developed in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic. Finally, I will analyse some elements of social change already visible in various parts of the world. The aim is to understand how COVID-19 could transform some social and ritual aspects of interpersonal distance. The main hypothesis is that in the immediate aftermath of this pandemic crisis, we will live in a period of moral inter-reign, in which we will experience a form of interactional anomie. This concept is also aimed at integrating the already rich Goffmanian theory on the interaction order, from a perspective that takes in account both the classic Durkheimian concept of anomie connected to dramatic social change and the Parsonsian theory of double contingency. I still do not know how long the pandemic will last and how many further quarantine periods will occur in the future. This is therefore more an exercise in sociological imagination (Wright Mills, 1959) than a sound, grounded theory

Goffman in dixon. Ethnographer or performer?
In this article I analyse a little-known part of Erving Goffman’s production: his doctoral dissertation Communication Conduct in an Island Community (1953). I will consider in particular the methodological aspects of the research and the characteristics of the community studied.
The article aims at demonstrating how the methodological discussion of this early work is so accurate, extensive and consistent with the ethnographical canon of the time to allow deconstructing of two typical criticism moved to Goffman: a) the lack of transparency in the specification of the methods of data collection; and b) the loose relationship between data collection and theoretical argumentations (for a review see Lemert, 1997)
