Prostatic neoplasia in the intact and castrated dog: How dangerous is castration?
Elective gonadectomy in the dog is a topic of interest for clinicians, pet-owners, and society. Although canine prostatic neoplasia (CPN) has a low incidence (0.35%), reports of an increased risk for castrated dogs attract attention and cause concern in pet-owners. Our aim is to provide professionals and non-professionals with a detailed description of this possible side effect of gonadectomy in the dog. The mean age at diagnosis of CPN ranges from 8.5 to 11.2 years. Medium to large size breeds are more frequently affected. Symptoms and findings of non-invasive examinations are not pathognomonic, therefore, cytological or histological examinations are needed for diagnosis. Overall, the incidence of metastasis reaches up to 80%, yet lung metastasis reportedly has no negative impact on median survival time (MST). It has been reported that castrated males have a significantly higher MST than intact males. Differences in inclusion criteria for studied populations make a comparison of studies difficult. Citation of odds ratios without consideration of the context of the reference may result in premature conclusions. We conclude that elective gonadectomy of adult male dogs under six years of age cannot be excluded from the veterinary practice due to concern of causing CPN until clear and strong evidence is available
Robustness of the Black-Scholes approach in the case of options on several assets
In this paper we analyse a stochastic volatility model that is an extension of the traditional Black-Scholes one. We price European options on several assets by using a superstrategy approach. We characterize the Markov superstrategies, and show that they are linked to a nonlinear PDE, called the Black-Scholes-Barenblatt (BSB) equation. This equation is the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation of an optimal control problem, which has a nice financial interpretation. Then we analyse the optimization problem included in the BSB equation and give some sufficient conditions for reduction of the BSB equation to a linear Black-Scholes equation. Some examples are given

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Prevenzione della toxoplasmosi umana e animale: il ruolo del Veterinario
Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite of both animals and man extremely common throughout the world. It causes abortion, mental retardation and retinochoroiditis in congenitally infected children and fatal encephalitis in immunodepressed patients. Clinical toxoplasmosis is also responsible for fetal losses in sheep, goats and pigs. Parasite transmission occurs through ingestion of food or water contaminated by sporulated oocysts, ingestion of raw milk, raw or undercooked meat,or transplacentally from mother to fetus/es. Knowledge of basic prophylactic measures is of fundamental importance in order to prevent infection of human beings and animals, especially in countries, such as Italy, where no specific governmental control plan is implemented and where every year approximately 1600 infants are born with congenital toxoplasmosis. This paper reviews current knowledge on this zoonosis, focusing on the key role of the Veterinarian as a public health officer
