Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Estuarine habitats use by the European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) in a populations restoration context : study of abiotic and biotic factors and the contribution of hydrodynamic models
The European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) is an anadromous species that was abundant in European rivers before the 20th century. Due to a sharp decline in its populations, the species has been classified as critically endangered, and is now the subject of two restoration programmes, in France and Germany. Thanks to restocking actions, there are currently two supported populations: one in the Gironde (France) and the second one in the Elbe (Germany). Between 2007 and 2015, more than 1.7 million individuals were released in the Gironde-Garonne-Dordogne basin and 20.000 individuals were released in the Elbe basin. In the Gironde, the population is monitored regularly, especially through scientific fishing campaigns in the estuary. The estuary is an essential habitat during the life of A. sturio, it is a migration corridor for juveniles and spawners, and it is also a growing habitat in which it may reside for several years as a juvenile before migrating to sea. During its growth at sea, given its coastal habits, A. sturio may also continue to make incursions into estuarine environments, either to find refuge (favourable environmental conditions) or preys. However, the environmental factors involved in the selection of estuarine habitats are not yet well identified. The aim of this study is to identify the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on the spatio-temporal distribution of A. sturio in the Gironde estuary. Based on the ecology of the species, the individuals were divided into two groups according to a size/age threshold (68cm fork length, which corresponds to about 3 years old). Above this threshold, most individuals are able to move back and forth with the marine environment; below this threshold, most individuals live only in the estuary. A spatial analysis combining biological data from sampling campaigns with environmental data simulated by a hydrodynamic model (MARS3D) has revealed a difference in habitat selection between these two groups on a seasonal scale in the Gironde estuary. The environmental variables tested, i.e. temperature, salinity, water column height, suspended matter concentration and current speed, explain more than 76% of the seasonal distribution of A. sturio. These results led to the localisation of potential habitats in the estuaries of the Gironde (beyond the sampling zone), the Loire, the Seine and the Elbe using hydrodynamic models similar to the one used in the Gironde. Potential habitats were identified in the four estuaries, in varying quantities and distribution depending on the season. The Seine and the Loire estuary can be favourable in terms of abiotic conditions in summer, mainly at the mouth of the estuary. In the Elbe estuary, potential habitats were identified for individuals < 68 cm mainly in spring and winter, while in autumn and summer the areas were very limited. Potential habitats were also identified at all seasons for individuals ≥ 68 cm, mainly at the mouth of the estuary and in coastal waters at all seasons but mainly in summer. VIII Finally, to explore the influence of biotic factors, a more specific study of prey consumption by A. sturio in Gironde was carried out. The results show that habitat selection is influenced by the presence of prey, mainly in autumn
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Ex situ experiments to assess and understand the response of young fish stages to environmental conditions
Global changes are leading to significant biodiversity loss, with chemical contamination being one major factor in these declines, especially in aquatic ecosystems. Active biomonitoring appears as a relevant strategy for the evaluation of environmental contamination and its impact on habitat suitability for aquatic species. Within the WFD framework, the only standardized methods available for water quality chemical assessment are available on invertebrates. This work is part of this context, showing first the lack of standardised approaches for evaluating fish responses to chemical contamination of water bodies. In a context of fish populations’ losses, early fish life stages are particularly relevant due to their high sensitivity to contamination and their key role in population recruitment. In this context, two strategies were implemented and applied in the Garonne basin, located is South-Western France, in which populations of fish species have significantly declined in recent decades. A preliminary toxic risk assessment was conducted at the basin scale using the PAF method (Potentially Affected Fraction of species). This evaluation revealed an important risk linked with some chemical families, such as pharmaceuticals and metals on fish across the two main axes of the basin. This work also showed a higher toxic risk for early life stages of fish compared to adults and juveniles. Then, an active biomonitoring strategy was developed and implemented on the Garonne river to evaluate the responses of organisms to water quality under controlled temperature and oxygen conditions. This method was first used using two model species: the amphipod Gammarus fossarum at adult and embryonic stages, which is a crustacean commonly used as a sentinel species for environmental monitoring; and the Japanese medaka Oryzias latipes which is a laboratory fish species commonly used for the assessment of chemicals toxicity. Experiments with these two models were conducted during spring, which is the reproduction period of many fish species in the Garonne basin. The results showed a strong impact of the river water on the development of O. latipes embryos but only low toxicity-related responses were observed in G. fossarum at both embryonic and adult stages. These experiments demonstrated the feasibility and usefulness of the exposure method for the exposure of early life stages to the environment and highlights, through the difference of sensitivity between the two taxa, the relevance of the use of early life stages for water contamination monitoring. This same exposure method was then used to study the response of early life stages of a native fish species, the allis shad (Alosa alosa), whose population numbers in the basin have been very low since the 2000s. The aim of this work was to investigate the actual suitability of water of spawning grounds for early life stages of the species. Three experiments were conducted on three different batches of embryos over two years during the reproduction V period and showed reduced survival of embryos exposed to the Garonne river compared to the control. These results raise concern about the chemical contamination in the basin and the suitability of water for maintaining the actual population. Finally, this thesis highlights the necessity of considering early life stages in chemical assessment and monitoring of aquatic environments, particularly in a context of important declines of fish populations
