    The strategic management of knowledge resources

    This paper reviews contemporary international IC frameworks and determines their strengths and weaknesses and from this a new model is developed. The proposed SMKR framework focuses on organisational sustainability and provides new understandings as to how the organisation can engage with the following elements: stakeholder engagement, establishment of a dynamic view of knowledge resources management and a focus on emergent strategies. It suggests that policy developments in the area of knowledge resource management, measurement and reporting should include these important elements that receive only limited attention within contemporary international IC frameworks. The main implications of this paper are that current contemporary IC frameworks are limited and that to overcome these limitations an engagement with relevant aspects of the literature pertaining to strategy, performance measurement and management of IC is necessary. Finally, the paper contributes to ongoing policy debates about suitable frameworks for the managing and reporting of knowledge resources

    Critical Analysis of International Guidelines for the Management of Knowledge Resources

    The shift towards a knowledge based economy is at the core of the debate of contemporary management and accounting literature and organisations are challenged by the need to manage their knowledge resources. Several national and international institutions have produced authoritative “guidelines” to facilitate the management and reporting of KR. Many of these guidelines are the result of co-operation between researchers, companies, industry organisations and consultants and have, therefore, been informed by practice. However, to date, there has been no serious critique of these guidelines. The main objective of this chapter is to provide an in-depth analysis of six contemporary guidelines. By reviewing these guidelines, this chapter explores how each of these addresses the MKR and therefore facilitates the management and reporting of KR. Therefore, this chapter will establish some of the key issues involved in understanding MKR. It will also provide an overview of how these issues are addressed or otherwise in the six guidelines. Two key messages of this chapter are the followings: first, MKR and its elements are embedded in various ways into the international guidelines examined; second, that a key policy issue is international harmonisation

    Organic fouling in forward osmosis: Governing factors and a direct comparison with membrane filtration driven by hydraulic pressure

    The fouling behavior of osmotically-driven forward osmosis (FO) is widely believed to be superior with respect to hydraulic pressure-driven membrane applications, based on a number of experiments reported in the literature. However, experimental confounders often exist, preventing fair comparison between the different processes, one being the deployment of non-comparable membranes. This study systematically investigates the conditions influencing organic fouling in FO and compares the behavior in FO and in a hydraulic pressure-driven process, under equivalent conditions. The same state-of-the-art polyamide FO membranes were used in the tests, which were run with real feed solutions and under varying conditions to observe the effect of initial flux, draw solution, and feed ionic composition. The results suggest that initial flux and calcium have the strongest influence on the extent of flux decline and recovery. The influence of different draw solutions in FO becomes apparent when the flux is relatively low. Analysis of the fouling indices and of the effective driving force, as well as direct observation of membranes following fouling, support the conclusion that the fouling behavior of the FO process is not necessarily better compared to an analogous hydraulic pressure-driven one, especially under relevant operational conditions and when the two processes work with similar fluxes
