Toward a scientific framework for the Personal Meaning Organization (PMO) paradigm: neuroimaging and genetic studies.
Introduction: Reciprocity with primary care-givers drives subjects’ adaptive abilities towards
the construction of the most useful Personal Meaning Organization (PMO) with respect to their
developmental environment.
Materials and methods: We analyzed the post-rationalist approach over the last ten years focusing
on the construction of a specific framework for distinguishing immediate experience from
explanations of the experience, the moviola technique, and the analysis of awareness and
resistance. Functional neuroimaging (fNI) was used to conduct a scientific in vivo study of PMO.
Results: Predictable, invariable care-giver behaviors allow an inward focus and a physical view
of reciprocity: when reciprocity is high, a controller-type inward PMO develops; when it is low,
the inward PMO develops in a detached manner. The Controller PMO is focused on the need for
protection/exploration; the Detached PMO is focused on need for expression during isolation.
Variable, non-predictable care-giver behavior allows an outward focus and a semantic view of
reciprocity: when reciprocity is high, a contextualized outward PMO develops; when it is low,
a principle-oriented outward PMO develops. The former interprets changes in the relational
environment one by one; the latter focuses on the management of antithetical aspects of reality.
Discussion: Focusing on the PMO promotes the emergence of adaptive individual resources,
thereby improving skills needed for the control of perturbing emotions and more flexible
behavior strategies

Experimental Investigation of Helicopter Noise While Approaching an Elevated Helipad
The present paper describes a test campaign performed to investigate the noise footprint emitted by a helicopter in an idealised urban context, reproducing the approach to an elevated helipad. The test campaign was performed in Politecnico di Milano’s anechoic chamber and was finalised to investigate the effects produced only by helicopter noise. The set up consisted of a two-blade main rotor helicopter model and an aluminium rectangular prism model reproducing the landing building. Ground observer perceptions were recorded by means of a surface microphone and a realistic landing trajectory was approximated as a succession of fixed point measurements. Collected data were analysed through acoustic spectra and sound maps. Spectra were used to comprehend physical phenomena, such as reflection, diffraction and shielding, and to analyse the different contributions of helicopter noise. A sound map analysis enabled us to obtain a global perspective of the involved phenomena and to understand th extent to which people close to a building are stressed by a helicopter approaching an elevated urban helipad. Moreover, the experimental database, obtained over a free geometry, can be considered a useful tool for the validation of aeroacoustic solvers with different levels of fidelity
Extensive rhabdomyoma of the head and neck region : a case report and a literature review [Rabdomioma del distretto testa-collo : caso clinico e revisione della letteratura]
Rhabdomyomas are rare mesenchymal benign tumors of striated muscle origin that can be classified into cardiac and extracardiac types. Cardiac rhabdomyomas are considered as hamartomatous lesion because of their association with phacomatosis. Extracardiac type is further classified into adult, fetal and genital form, depending on the individual tumor's degree of differentiation. Adult head and neck rhabdomyomas are rare pathologies of adult patients, with a male predominance. The occurrence of multifocality is a rare manifestation of this uncommon lesion. Presenting symptoms are related to the location and dimension of the tumors and they include upper airway obstruction, Eustachian tube dysfunction, dysphagia and mucosal and neck mass. Because of their high rate of recurrence, radical resection is the treatment of choice of this kind of tumors. In this article is reported a rare and particularly large case of head and neck adult rhabdomyoma, presenting with an history of sleep apnea and night-time stridor
MECHANISMS OF HDL REDUCTION AFTER PROBUCOL - CHANGES IN HDL SUBFRACTIONS AND INCREASED REVERSE CHOLESTERYL ESTER TRANSFER
Treatment with probucol, a widely used lipid-lowering agent, is associated with a significant reduction of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, but with an apparently improved removal of cholesteryl esters from tissues (e.g., from tendon xanthomas). The effects of probucol (500 mg twice daily) on HDL subfraction distribution and cholesteryl ester transfer activity were tested in 12 patients with stable type II hyperlipidemia [low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol > 180 mg/dl] after a placebo-controlled cross-over trial. Probucol significantly lowered total cholesterol (-13.8%), LDL cholesterol (-9.1%), and HDL cholesterol (-30%). By rate zonal ultracentrifugation, a marked reduction of HDL2 cholesterol (-68%) was shown, whereas changes in HDL, were less signficiant (-21%). These findings were confirmed by polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis, typically showing a reduction or disappearance of HDL(2b) particles and the prevalence of particles in the HDL(3a) range. Cholesteryl ester transfer from HDL to lower density lipoproteins was significantly increased (30%) in all patients. These findings suggest that, in addition to the well-documented in vitro changes (prevention of LDL peroxidation and macrophage uptake), probucol characteristically modifies HDL particle distribution in vivo, and is associated with a significant increase of cholesteryl ester transfer activity
