    The names of mythological characters in the folk tales from Lemko region (comparative studies)

    The article deals with the names of the mythological characters of the folk tales in the texts recorded by Mykhailo Hyriak in the XX century in Presov Region, Slovakia. Analyzed items are compared with their variants in the folk texts from Pokuttia, Podillia, Transcarpathian, Poltava, Kyiv and Chernihiv Regions. Comparative analysis represents the differences in the naming of similar tale characters, semantic and functional peculiarities of the names. Also author pays attention to the influence of culture, language and traditions of the other ethnic groups on the system of the names in Lemko folk tales

    The paper deals with the word maidan in the modern Ukrainian city discourse. Changing of its meaning are analyzed in different periods of time. Special attention is paid to the history of nomination of the main Kyiv square - the Independence Square. After Orange Revolution (2004) and especially after Euromaidan (2013-2014) it is called just Maidan in different languages.     W artykule przedstawiono sytuację języka ukraińskiego we współczesnych społeczeństwach wielokulturowych. Wybrane zagadnienia prezentują tradycyjny rozwój, przetrwanie oraz zachowanie języka w kraju oraz w warunkach emigracji. Socjolingwistyczne badania tego problemu są bardzo ważne dla tworzenia całościowego obrazu rozwoju języka. Cel artykułu polega na przedstawieniu miejsca języka ukraińskiego w kontekście wielojęzyczności współczesnego świata oraz na powyrównywaniu takich definicji, jak dwujęzyczność, język ojczysty, język odziedziczony, język docelowy, pierwszy i drugi język w różnych językach (przede wszystkim w angielskim, polskim oraz ukraińskim) w odniesieniu właśnie do języka ukraińskiego. Ważnym aspektem jest porównywanie sytuacji języka ukraińskiego w diasporze w różnych krajach oraz znaczenia języka dla przedstawicieli różnych fal emigracji. Znaczenie języka dla każdego kolejnego pokolenia, skutki interferencji językowej, sposoby na zachowanie języka to podstawowe zagadnienia, które są interesujące zarówno dla językoznawców, jak i socjologów.The article deals with the situation of Ukrainian language in contemporary multicultural societies. Selected issues present traditional ways of developing, existence and maintenance of the language in its home country and abroad. Sociolinguistic studies of this problem are very important for the coherent view of language developing processes. The aim of the paper is to represent the place of Ukrainian in the context of multilingualism of the modern world and to compare such definitions as bilingualism, mother tongue, heritage language, target language, first language and second language in different languages (English, Polish and Ukrainian) with reference to Ukrainian. One of the main research issues is comparing of lingual situation of Ukrainian in diaspora in different countries and its meaning for representatives of different waves of emigration. Meaning the language for each next generation, consequences of the language interference, ways of maintenance are the main issues interesting not just for linguists, but for sociologists so far

    Using of diminutives in the speech of bilingual children speaking Ukrainian and Polish

    The article deals with the problem of bilingualism of the children speaking Ukraini-an and Polish and living in Poland. One of the main issues of the children’s speech is using diminutives in both languages – L1, L2. The research involves 14 pre-school bilingual children. It shows qualitative and quantitative differences in using and creating diminutives caused by divided areas of using the languages – at home and in kindergartens and other public places. Interference, code-mixing, using word-building formants in a common way in L1 and in L2, and mixing them are typi-cal and wide-spread processes in the speech of bilingual children. Speaking in two typologically-related Slavic languages helps to acquiesce a new language and on the other hand causes code-mixing in all levels – lexical, syntactical, and word-building. Analysis of the diminutives in the children’s speech presents also peculiar-ities of the development of language social skills

    The article deals with the analysis of the penetration of elements of vernacular language, in particular suržyk and dialects, into various genres of mass culture and literature, from the point of view of anthropological linguistics. Postcolonial development of language involves the expansion of its functional significance, which is manifested in new phenomena and the transformation of traditional forms. Suržyk and dialects in mass culture are signs of language evolution or degradation, expansion or contraction of the meaning of а language in the cultural context.Стаття присвячена аналізу проникнення у різні жанри масової культури та літератури елементів живого мовлення, зокрема суржику та діалектів, з погляду антропологічної лінгвістики. Постколоніальний розвиток мови передбачає розширення її функціонального значення, що виявляється у нових явищах та трансформації традиційних форм.
