    Luciano Giaccari e lo Studio 970 2 di Varese (1967-1977)

    La ricerca ha per oggetto l'osservazione, l'analisi e la ricostruzione della figura di Luciano Giaccari e della sua attività sviluppata con lo Studio 970 2 a Varese tra il 1967 e il 1977. L'intento è quello di mostrare come il centro fosse nato come laboratorio artistico, entro il quale Giaccari organizza cinque manifestazioni peculiari - "24 ORE di NO STOP THEATRE" (1968), "Opere di Neve" (1969), "Opere di Fumo" (1969), "Esperimento di Nuovo Teatro" (1969) e "interVENTO" (1970) - legate alla necessità di sviluppare un contesto culturale alternativo agli spazi più 'ufficiali'. E' in questa realtà che contestualmente emerge in Giaccari l'interesse germinante per la sperimentazione video, attivata concretamente solo a partire dal 1971, anno in cui è acquisita la strumentazione relativa e lo Studio 970 2 viene trasformato in centro di produzione videografica, uno dei primi in ambito italiano. La ricerca mira quindi a ricostruire l'intera attività compiuta da Giaccari e le diverse linee di lavoro: l'inserimento nel settore della controinformazione (1971-1973), la produzione di videotape di artisti italiani e stranieri (1971-1975) e la realizzazione di documentazioni in video di molteplici performance artistiche (1971-1977). Come anche il contributo critico e teorico che egli offre alla materia al principio degli anni Settanta, particolarmente grazie alla stesura della "Classificazione dei modi d'impiego del videotape in arte" (1973)

    The biomass quality of algae used for CO2 sequestration is highly species-specific and may vary over time

    T he utilization of microalgae to temporarily sequester CO2 is a hot topic in algal biotechnology. Its association with biomass utilization is often proposed to increase economical revenues. Although C allocation patterns may determine the success or failure of such use of algae, the impact of elevated CO2 on biomass quality has not been investigated systematically. In this study, four algae of different taxonomy and mode of inorganic carbon acquisition were subjected to a transition from low (390 μL L−1) to elevated (1,000 μL L−1) pCO2. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a rapid, nonextractive, and reliable technique, was used to attain the necessary information on all main organic pools concomitantly and with no need for extractive procedures. Cell organic composition was analyzed after 24 hours and 20 days since the transition. T he responses were very species-specific, and the biomass quality was modified over time, indicating that species selection and monitoring of biomass are essential for an adequate control on the quality of the product. Although these concepts may have been in the mind of the illuminated algae users, the experimental evidence is essentially nonexisting. We intended to make a first step towards filling this gap in knowledge

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    CO2 concentrating mechanisms of the potentially toxic dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum (Dynophyceae, Gonyaulacales)

    The low CO2 concentration in seawater poses severe restrictions on photosynthesis, especially on those species with form II RUBISCO. We found that the potentially toxic dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum Clap. et J. Lachm. possesses a form II RUBISCO. To cast some light on the mechanisms this organism undergoes to cope with low CO2 availability, we compared cells grown at atmospheric (370 ppm) and high (5000 ppm) CO2 concentrations, with respect to a number of physiological parameters related to dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) acquisition and assimilation. The photosynthetic affinity for DIC was about one order of magnitude lower in cells cultivated at high [CO2]. Endpoint pH-drift experiments suggest that P. reticulatum was not able to efficiently use HCO3 ) under our growth conditions. Only internal carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity was detected, and its activity decreased by about 60% in cells cultured at high [CO2]. Antibodies raised against a variety of algal CAs were used for Western blot analysis: P. reticulatum extracts only cross-reacted with anti-ß-CA sera, and the amount of immunoreactive protein decreased in cells grown at high [CO2]. No pyrenoids were observed under all growth conditions. Our data indicate that P. reticulatum has an inducible carbonconcentrating mechanism (CCM) that operates in the absence of pyrenoids and with little intracellular CO2 accumulation. Calculations on the impact of the CA activity to photosynthetic growth [CO2] suggest that it is an essential component of the CCM of P. reticulatum and is necessary to sustain the photosynthetic rates observed at ambient CO2

    An imbalance in the cellular C:N ratio may appreciably affect C allocation in algal cells. The consequences of these rearrangements of cellular pools on cell energetics, ecological fitness, and evolutionary trajectories are little known, although they are expected to be substantial. We investigated the fate of C in 11 microalgae cultured semi continuously at three [NO3-] and constant pCO2. We developed a new computational method for the semiquantitative use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy data for the determination of macromolecular composition. No obvious relationship was observed between the taxonomy and the allocation strategies adopted by the 11 species considered in this study. Not all species responded to a lower N availability by accumulating lipids or carbohydrates: Dunaliella parva W. Lerche and Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle et Heimdal were homeostatic with respect to organic cell composition. A hyperbolic dependence of the lipid concentration from cell volume was observed. The level of reduction of organic constituents of green algae was parabolically related to size and was modulated in response to changes in N availability; the same was not true for the species bearing a ‘‘red’’ chloroplast. The above observations are discussed with respect to phytoplankton species composition and palatability for grazers, oleogenesis, and overall cell energetics

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
