    Conservation agriculture‐based sustainable intensification improves technical efficiency in Northern Bangladesh: The case of Rangpur

    The dissemination of conservation agriculture (CA) technologies has become the objective of a growing number of projects aimed at reducing food insecurity in vulnerable areas of the world. While many studies have found that CA increases farm productivity, little is known about the components of the productivity gains related to CA adoption. CA is a knowledge‐intensive technology, and it is expected to affect both technical efficiency (TE) and input productivity positively. Using cross‐sectional farm‐level data of 220 maize farmers in Bangladesh, we measure the impact of CA on farmers' TE. We first apply propensity score matching (PSM) to create comparable counterfactual groups of CA and non‐CA farmers. Then, we use a stochastic frontier with correction for self‐selection bias to analyse TE. Finally, we fit a stochastic meta‐frontier (SMF) model to the data and use it to compare TE across the two farmer groups. The analysis showed that CA farmers exhibit greater TE levels than non‐CA farmers. This can be attributed to enhancements in farm management, leading to 8% and 9% increases in their productivity and TE, respectively. Thus, there is a case for policymakers to strengthen programs delivering CA technologies that improve food security in Bangladesh

    Behavioral pattern discovery from sensor data stream

    The advances in technologies and microelectronic devices have led to the development of sensor nodes which are able to sense, process and transmit data, and co-ordinate among themselves to form wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Sensors embedded in objects can sense and interact with the environment around us to achieve ubiquitous computing. The deployment of large-scale WSNs is increasing day-by-day in many application domains such as habitat monitoring, object tracking, environment monitoring, military, disaster management, as well as smart environments. These applications generate huge volume of dynamic, geographically distributed and heterogeneous data in the form of streams. Such data are useless unless mined accurately and efficiently for useful knowledge. Data mining techniques play an important role to efficiently extract and analyze usable information from the raw data to facilitate automated or human induced decision. Data stream from WSN can be mined to extract knowledge in real time about the sensed environment (e.g., mining certain behaviors) and the network itself (e.g., predicting faulty nodes), but all these present new challenges for data mining techniques since traditional data mining techniques are not directly usable because of resource constraints in WSN and limitation of current techniques. Given the fact that WSNs will be the integral parts of the future Internet of Things (IoT) environment, there is a pressing need to develop efficient techniques to mine knowledge from the sensor data patterns in order to make prompt intelligent decisions in an integrated service architecture. The proposed thesis focuses on the design of a framework for extracting behavioral patterns that capture the temporal relations among sensor nodes in a WSN in an efficient way. Three types of behavioral patterns are introduced: Associated sensor patterns (ASPs), Share-Frequent Sensor Patterns (SFSPs) and Regularly Frequent Sensor Patterns (RFSPs). The formal definition of the required knowledge, the data structure to store the data, and the mining techniques that relate to the extraction of the behavioral patterns are defined. ASPs capture association-like-co-occurrences as well as temporal correlations which are linked with such co-occurrences from sensor data. To capture such patterns from static sensor dataset as well as sensor data stream, two compact tree structures called ASP-tree and sliding window ASP-tree (SWASP-tree) have been proposed which use pattern growth-based mining technique to mine patterns with only one scan over dataset. Both trees maintain `build once and mine many' property which make them highly suitable for interactive mining. SFSP discover share relations among the sensors considering the number of triggers rather than binary pattern frequency and builds a highly compact tree structure called share-frequent sensor pattern tree (ShrFSP-tree). ShrFSP-tree has been enhanced into parallel ShrFSP-tree (PShrFSP-tree) for faster mining in parallel and distributed environment and demonstrates better time and memory efficiency than the existing most efficient algorithms. RFSPs discover the shape of occurrence behaviors among sensors using a tree structure called RFSP-tree. To make RFSP more efficient and integrate in the Hadoop platform, a MapReduce-based framework is proposed that mines RFSPs among a set of dedicated nodes in parallel and provides better service availability and timely response of mining results. Knowledge extracted from these patterns will be useful to improve the performance of WSN and the quality of services (QoS) it provides in a number of ways, e.g., real-time knowledge extraction about the physical environment, identification of chain of correlated events in industries as well as resource management and operation in WSN

    How does relative deprivation cause people to condone political violence? A case study of Bangladesh

    How does relative deprivation cause people to condone political violence? This thesis investigates this question by utilizing survey data conducted in Bangladesh. Scarcity of public resources, lethal political confrontation and poor resource allocation make Bangladesh a fertile ground for violence. Although the survey suggests a relationship exists between relative deprivation and the public attitude toward condoning political violence, the regression analysis reveals that the relationship is imprecise. Small sample size, lack of technical capacity, and limited applicability of the foundational theory may have caused this imprecise outcome. The study concludes by providing recommendations for future research to undertake a mixed method for this sensitive topic

The experiment was consisted of two factors; Factor A: GA3viz. (i) Go; 0 ppm GA3 (control) and (ii) GI; 100 ppm GA3 and Factor B: Vermicompost viz. (i) Yo; 0% vermicompost + 90% coco peat + 10% broken bricks + dissolved nutrients of fish pond water (control), (ii) VI; 20% vermicompost +70% coco peat + 10% broken bricks + dissolved nutrients of fish pond water and (iii) V2; 40%vermicompost + 50% coco peat + 10% broken bricks + dissolved nutrients of fish pond water. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD). In terms of GA3 application, the highest fruit yield (405.66"g plant") was found from GI whereas the lowest fruit yield (336.03 g plant") was found from Go. Regarding vermicompost, V2 showed higher growth and yield attributes which resulted the highest fruit yield (421.00 g plant") whereas the lowest fruit yield (303.80 g plant") was found from Yo. Considering interaction effect, GJV2 showed highest fruit yield (470.10 g plant") whereas the lowest fruit yield (290.60 g plant") was found from GoVo. So, the treatment combination of GIV2 can be treated as the best among all the treatment combinations

    Comprehensive Demonstration of Greater Significance of Infaq fi Sabilillah

    “Infaq fi Sabilillah: spending in the way of Allah (SWT)," other than Zakat, is usually considered a voluntary act of good deed in Islam. Also, there is a common understanding among Muslims that this spending is just an optional act of worship and is less important in terms of significance and status than mandatory acts of worship. However, the statements of Allah (SWT), the sayings of the Prophet (PBUH), and the opinions of scholars highlight the high importance of “spending in the way of Allah (SWT).” This research aims to demonstrate the greater significance of “Infaq fi Sabilillah” as an act of good deed in Islam. Many Qur’anic verses and Hadiths of the Prophet (PBUH) assert the great importance and status of spending in the way of Allah (SWT), even above those of some mandatory acts of worship. Also, according to the opinions of some scholars, there are occasions when spending, in addition to Zakat, becomes obligatory and necessary. The rewards of this spending and the consequence of not spending in the way of Allah (SWT) are also stated in some Qur’anic verses. Allah (SWT) has referred a believer in Al-Qur’an by various distinct qualities & names having some specific attributes. The activities of “Infaq fi Sabilillah” are the most mentioned attribute of a believer mentioned in those distinct qualities & names. Some relevant Qur’anic verses, the Hadiths of the Prophet (PBUH), and the opinions of scholars have been identified and presented in this paper. This paper demonstrates that “Infaq fi Sabilillah” is an act of greater significance in Islam.

    Sub-band Coding of Hexagonal Images

    According to the circle-packing theorem, the packing efficiency of a hexagonal lattice is higher than an equivalent square tessellation. Consequently, in several contexts, hexagonally sampled images compared to their Cartesian counterparts are better at preserving information content. In this thesis, novel mapping techniques alongside the wavelet compression scheme are presented for hexagonal images. Specifically, we introduce two tree-based coding schemes, referred to as SBHex (spirally-mapped branch-coding for hexagonal images) and BBHex (breadth-first block-coding for hexagonal images). Both of these coding schemes respect the geometry of the hexagonal lattice and yield better compression results. Our empirical results show that the proposed algorithms for hexagonal images produce better reconstruction quality at lower bits-per-pixel values compared to the tree-based coding counterparts for the Cartesian grid

    A Kano Model based Computer System for Respondents Determination: Customer needs analysis for Product Development Aspects

    The first step to develop a product is to identify a set of customer needs. In this regard, Kano model is often used. Using Kano model, a product developer can identify whether or not a product attribute is attractive, must-be, or alike. To do so, it is important to obtain customers' opinions using a prescribed questionnaire. This raises a fundamental question that is how many customers should be asked to make a reliable conclusion. We have developed a system that simulates customer answers in accordance with Kano model. We have used the system to know the minimal number of customers needed to determine whether or not a product attribute is attractive, must-be, reverse, or alike. We intend to show the results related to the abovementioned issue and discuss how to integrate the system into a real-life product development process.     EFFECT OF SALT WATER ON GROWTH, YIELD, AND QUALITY OF HYDROPONICALLY GROWN TOMATO

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN HORTICULTURETomatoes grow faster in hydroponics than they do in soil. Therefore a pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from September-2019 to February-2020, to investigate the effect of salt water on growth, yield, and quality of hydroponically grown tomatoes. The experiment consisted of two factors, and followed completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Factor A: Tomato variety denoted as V: V 1 = BARI tomato-8, V 2 = BARI tomato-9, V = BARI tomato-10, and Factor B: Salt water denoted as S: S 0 = 0 ml L -1 3 + standard solution, S = 0.5 ml L -1 + standard solution, S 2 = 0.75 ml L -1 + standard solution and S + standard solution. Experimental result revealed that in among different varieties, cultivation of BARI tomato-8 (V ) in hydroponic system, had the highest number of flower clusters plant -1 1 (13.17), fruits cluster plant -1 (4.51), fruits plant -1 (50.00), fruit polar length (3.90 cm), fruit radial length (3.68 cm), individual fruit fresh weight (45.64 g), fruit dry weight (2.59 g) yield plant -1 (4.13 kg), volume (195.0 cc) and pH value (4.41). In case of different concentration of salt water application the highest yield plant (4.19 kg) was recorded in S 0 (0 NaCl ml L -1 + standard solution) treatment. In case of combination, BARI tomato-8 (V 1 1 ) along with (S 0 3 = 1 ml L ) no salt water application (0 NaCl ml L + standard solution) affected plant growth, yield and quality parameters, leading to the maximum plant yield (4.33 kg) than compared to other treatment combination. Therefore, it was concluded that the BARI toamto-8 variety in conjunction with non-salt water concentrations outperformed other treatment combinations for achieving higher yield and quality tomato production in a hydroponic cultivation system
