    Marine biodiversity-ecosystem functions under uncertain environmental futures

    Anthropogenic activity is currently leading to dramatic transformations of ecosystems and losses of biodiversity. The recognition that these ecosystems provide services that are essential for human well-being has led to a major interest in the forms of the biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationship. However, there is a lack of studies examining the impact of climate change on these relationships and it remains unclear how multiple climatic drivers may affect levels of ecosystem functioning. Here, we examine the roles of two important climate change variables, temperature and concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, on the relationship between invertebrate species richness and nutrient release in a model benthic estuarine system. We found a positive relationship between invertebrate species richness and the levels of release of NH(4)-N into the water column, but no effect of species richness on the release of PO(4)-P. Higher temperatures and greater concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide had a negative impact on nutrient release. Importantly, we found significant interactions between the climate variables, indicating that reliably predicting the effects of future climate change will not be straightforward as multiple drivers are unlikely to have purely additive effects, resulting in increased levels of uncertainty

    Differentiated protection in 5G vehicular networks

    Automotive applications need high reliability and service continuity to support self-driving and safety in smart city environments. Suitable allocation of network functions is studied and optimal solutions based on Integer Linear Programming methodology are found. Differentiated reliability concept is applied in the presence of two different 5G classes of service, namely eMBB and URLLC. Saving of processing and bandwidth resources is numerically evaluated by combining service-based shared and dedicated protection in a reference scenario. Scalability aspects of the approach are also discussed

    The key role of the NAD biosynthetic enzyme nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase in regulating cell functions

    The enzyme nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase (NMNAT) catalyzes a reaction central to all known NAD biosynthetic routes. In mammals, three isoforms with distinct molecular and catalytic properties, different subcellular and tissue distribution have been characterized. Each isoform is essential for cell survival, with a critical role in modulating NAD levels in a compartment-specific manner. Each isoform supplies NAD to specific NAD-dependent enzymes, thus regulating their activity with impact on several biological processes, including DNA repair, proteostasis, cell differentiation, and neuronal maintenance. The nuclear NMNAT1 and the cytoplasmic NMNAT2 are also emerging as relevant targets in specific types of cancers and NMNAT2 has a key role in the activation of antineoplastic compounds. This review recapitulates the biochemical properties of the three isoforms and focuses on recent advances on their protective function, involvement in human diseases and role as druggable targets

    Inference through innovation processes tested in the authorship attribution task

    Urn models for innovation capture fundamental empirical laws shared by several real-world processes. The so-called urn model with triggering includes, as particular cases, the urn representation of the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet process and the Dirichlet process, seminal in Bayesian non-parametric inference. In this work, we leverage this connection to introduce a general approach for quantifying closeness between symbolic sequences and test it within the framework of the authorship attribution problem. The method demonstrates high accuracy when compared to other related methods in different scenarios, featuring a substantial gain in computational efficiency and theoretical transparency. Beyond the practical convenience, this work demonstrates how the recently established connection between urn models and non-parametric Bayesian inference can pave the way for designing more efficient inference methods. In particular, the hybrid approach that we propose allows us to relax the exchangeability hypothesis, which can be particularly relevant for systems exhibiting complex correlation patterns and non-stationary dynamics.A class of urn-based models accounts for stochastic regularities observed in systems that exhibit innovation in diverse forms and temporal scales, from the appearance of new organisms to the evolution of language to daily new experiences. The authors investigate the predictive power of those models in inference problems, addressing the authorship attribution task as a case study
