The acceptance of fluorescence detectors for quasi horizontal showers induced by weak interacting particles
Harmony and discord within the English ‘counter-culture’, 1965-1975, with particular reference to the ‘rock operas’ Hair, Godspell, Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar
PhDThis thesis considers the discrete, historically-specific theatrical and musical sub-genre of ‘Rock Opera’ as a lens through which to examine the cultural, political and social changes that are widely assumed to have characterised ‘The Sixties’ in Britain. The musical and dramatic texts, creation and production of Hair (1967), Tommy (1969), Godspell (1971), Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) and other neglected ‘Rock Operas’ of the period are analysed. Their great popularity with ‘mainstream’ audiences is considered and contrasted with the overwhelmingly negative and often internally contradictory reaction towards them from the English ‘counter-culture’. This examination offers new insights into both the ‘counter-culture’ and the ‘mainstream’ against which it claimed to define and differentiate itself.
The four ‘Rock Operas’, two of which are based upon Christian scriptures, are considered as narratives of spiritual quest. The relationship between the often controversial quests for re-defined forms of faith and the apparently precipitous ‘secularization’ and ‘de-Christianization’ of British society during the 1960s and 1970s is considered.
The thesis therefore analyses the ‘Rock Operas’ as significant, enlightening prisms through which to view many of the profound societal debates – over ‘faith’ and ‘belief’ in the widest senses, sexuality, the Vietnam war, generational conflict, drugs and ‘spiritual enlightenment’, and race – which were, to some considerable extent, elevated onto the national, political agenda by the activities of the broadly-defined ‘counter-culture’. It considers subsequent representations of the ‘counter-culture’ as the root of a contested but enduring popular legacy of ‘The Sixties' as a period of profound cultural change
DICIONÁRIO NÔMADE: UMA CARTOGRAFIA DO INTERMEZZO
O presente trabalho tem como objetivo formular reflexões acerca de aspectos e modulações do conceito e da prática do nomadismo, relacionando-os às viagens no mundo contemporâneo. Uma travessia de oito meses de duração, realizada pelo autor no ano de 2011 através de alguns países da África e Ásia, serve de fio condutor do trabalho. Impressões, experiências e acontecimentos vividos vão-se construindo, em contraponto a citações literárias afins de viajantes, exploradores, romancistas, historiadores e poetas e intercalando-se a formulações teóricas de autores como Deleuze e Guattari, no Tratado de Nomadologia, Michel Onfray em Teoria da viagem e Michel Maffesoli em Sobre o nomadismo.This work aims to elaborate reflections about the various aspects and modulations of the concept and practice of nomadism, relating them to travel in the contemporary world. An eight months trip, undertaken by the author in 2011 in some countries in Africa and Asia, serves as a foundation to the work. Impressions, personal experiences and events will be discussed and contrasted with quotes by travelers, explorers, novelists, historians and poets. Interspersing these, there will be theoretical formulations of authors such as Deleuze and Guattari, in Treatise on Nomadology, Michel Onfray in Theory of Travel , and Maffesoli in About Nomadism
Writting and experience in the work of Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934)
Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934) foi autora de romances, contos e crônicas, tendo obtido uma inserção privilegiada no meio intelectual brasileiro, especialmente nas primeiras décadas do século XX, o que pode ser avaliado tanto pelas constantes reedições de suas obras bem como pela adoção de títulos que vieram a figurar como livros de leitura para o ensino básico. Receptiva aos pensamentos positivistas e científicos de sua época, Júlia acreditou que a República moveria o Brasil para o progresso. No entanto, em um curto espaço de tempo, suas obras de linguagem naturalista, indicavam a falência precoce de suas expectativas políticas. Mesmo assim, Júlia continuou suas investidas junto ao seu principal publico leitor: as mulheres e as crianças. Nesse trabalho, pretendemos lançar luz aos aspectos remetidos à recepção que a obra de Júlia Lopes teve quando de sua publicação. Nesse sentido, levamos em consideração o exame da abordagem constituída pela autora e das suas expectativas nutridas expressamente em relação às mulheres e as crianças.Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934) was the author of novels, short stories and essays, and obtained an insert inside the Brazilian intellectual environment, especially in the early decades of the twentieth century, which can be measured both by the constant reissues of his works as well as the adoption of titles that came to figure as textbooks for basic education. Receptive to the positivist and the scientific thoughts of his days, Júlia believed that the Republic would move Brazil to progress. However, in a short time, his works of natural language, pointing to the early failure of their political expectations. Even then, Júlia has continued its attacks with your main readership: women and children. In this work, we intend to shed light on aspects referred to the reception that the work of Júlia Lopes had when it was published. Accordingly, we consider the examination of the approach made by the author and their expectations nurtured explicitly in relation to women and children
Stochastic inflation in general relativity

We provide a formulation of stochastic inflation in full general relativity that goes beyond the slow-roll and separate universe approximations. We show how gauge-invariant Langevin source terms can be obtained for the complete set of Einstein equations in their Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formulation by providing a recipe for coarse-graining the spacetime in any small gauge. These stochastic source terms are defined in terms of the only dynamical scalar degree of freedom in single-field inflation and all depend simply on the first two time derivatives of the coarse-graining window function, on the gauge-invariant mode functions that satisfy the Mukhanov-Sasaki evolution equation, and on the slow-roll parameters. It is shown that this reasoning can also be applied to include gravitons as stochastic sources, thus enabling the study of all relevant degrees of freedom of general relativity for inflation. We validate the efficacy of these Langevin dynamics directly using an example in uniform field gauge, obtaining the stochastic e-fold number in the long wavelength limit without the need for a first-passage-time analysis. As well as investigating the most commonly used gauges in cosmological perturbation theory, we also derive stochastic source terms for the coarse-grained Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura formulation of Einstein\u27s equations, which enables a well-posed implementation for 3+1 numerical relativity simulations
On the attitudinal consequences of being mindful: Links between mindfulness and attitudinal ambivalence

The final version is available from SAGE Publications via the DOI in this record.A series of studies examined whether mindfulness is associated with the experience of attitudinal ambivalence. Studies 1A and 1B found that mindful individuals expressed greater comfort holding ambivalent views and reported feeling ambivalent less often. More mindful individuals also responded more positively to feelings of uncertainty (as assessed in Study 1B). Study 2 replicated these effects and demonstrated that mindful individuals had lower objective and subjective ambivalence across a range of attitude objects but did not differ in attitude valence, extremity, positivity/negativity, strength, or the need to evaluate. Study 3 showed that the link between greater ambivalence and negative affect was buffered by mindfulness, such that there was no link between the amount of ambivalence and negative affect among more mindful individuals. The results are discussed with respect to the benefits of mindfulness in relation to ambivalence and affect.Parts of this article were funded by a Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant awarded to the first author
