Alternative aviation fuels in Brazil: Environmental performance and economic feasibility

    No full text
The aviation sector is responsible for only 3% of the anthropogenic carbon emissions in the world. However, this transport mode – which demands 3-fold more energy per capita than other collective modes, such as railway and bus transportation – is exclusively supplied by fossil fuels, and it has grown at an impressive rate of 7.5% per year in the last decade in the world. In line with the global aims to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions and the dependency on fossil fuels, the decarbonization of the aviation sector – which is typically based on cost-intensive projects with rigorous quality control – is a challenge...BT/Biotechnology and Societ

Un Dios capaz del Hombre. Humanidad en Dios, divinización del hombre

    No full text
Abstract: Assuming that man is “capable of God” since he is His image, the author of this article questions the possibility of affirming that, likewise, God is “capable of man”. In the same way as there is a tendency in man to go to God, is there a tendency in God to go to man? In other words, does Divinity carry within itself humanity? Karl Barth and Yves Congar, who are two of the best theologians from the 20th century, have already raised the same question from different perspectives. After expounding their thoughts on the matter, this article raises three questions related to the basic thesis of whether God is capable of man, namely: Can any person of the Trinity become a man? What is the reason for incarnation? What are the implications of “humanity in God” with regard to our behaviour and theological language

    Heat Pumping in Nanomechanical Systems

    No full text
We propose using a phonon pumping mechanism to transfer heat from a cold to a hot body using a propagating modulation of the medium connecting the two bodies. This phonon pump can cool nanomechanical systems without the need for active feedback. We compute the lowest temperature that this refrigerator can achieve.Fil: Chamon, Claudio. Microscopic model of a phononic refrigerator

We analyze a simple microscopic model to pump heat from a cold to a hot reservoir in a nanomechanical system. The model consists of a one-dimensional chain of masses and springs coupled to a back gate through which a time-dependent perturbation is applied. The action of the gate creates a moving phononic barrier by locally pinning a mass. We solve the problem numerically using a nonequilibrium Green's function technique. For low driving frequencies and for sharp traveling barriers, we show that this microscopic model realizes a phonon refrigerator. © 2012 American Physical Society.Fil: Arrachea, Liliana del Carmen. The carbon footprint of alternative jet fuels produced in Brazil: exploring different approaches

    No full text
Although the potential of Alternative Jet Fuels (AJF) to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions has been widely reported upon in the literature, there are still discrepancies among the results. These may be due to the different GHG accounting methods, including those used by different Low-Carbon Policies (LCPs). To have a clearer understanding of the life cycle performance of AJF, the carbon footprint of ten pathways was estimated, comprising promising feedstocks – such as soybean, palm, sugarcane, sugarcane residues, forestry residues, used cooking oil, beef tallow, and steel off-gases – and ASTM-approved technologies: Hydroprocessed Fatty Acids, Alcohol-to-Jet, and Fischer-Tropsch. Six methodological approaches were used: the attributional and the consequential life cycle assessment, as well as guidelines for the four LCPs: Renovabio (Brazil), CORSIA (aviation sector), RFS (United States), and RED II (Europe). Soybean-based pathway (24 to 98.7 gCO2e/MJ) had the low to no potential for reducing GHG when compared to their fossil counterparts, mainly due to land use change. Of all food-based pathways, AJF produced from sugarcane performed the best (-10.4 to 43.7 gCO2e/MJ), especially when power surplus was credited. AJF from palm oil could present significant GHG reduction for palm expansion in degraded pasturelands. By contrast, Fischer-Tropsch of lignocellulosic residues showed the highest potential for reducing GHG (-95% to -130%). Different from food-based pathways, the potential GHG reduction of residues-based pathways converged within a narrower range (-130% to -50%), except when residual feedstocks have to be redirected from their current economic use. It could lead to GHG emissions higher than fossil fuel.BT/Biotechnology and Societ

Por fim, apresenta-se a ligação entre passar no teste de marca e ser capaz de entender representações, colocando a capacidade de se reconhecer como uma prova dessa capacidadeThe main goal of this dissertation is to show that exist a strong relationship between have a positive result in the mark test and be capable of understand representations. For it, we began building a base for the discussion of consciousness, concluding that consciousness is a biological issue and for it need to be answered by Biology. We concluded that the capacity of self-recognition is one of features of consciousness and showing that the mark test is capable to show if the animal is or not capable of self-recognition by elimination of any another kind of result. In the end, we show a bond between have a positive result in the mark test and be able to understand representations, putting the capability of self-recognition as a prove of i

Defesa: Curitiba, 26/06/2013Bibliografia: fls. Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to think over the construction process of narrative focus in Author, Author (2004), by David Lodge, a biographical novel about the writer Henry James (1843-1916). The narrator does not limit himself to guiding the reader through the narrative; rather, his attitude towards factual aspects of the life and literary course of the North-American novelist seems to play a fundamental role in the novel. In the fictional construction of the débâcle of "Guy Domville", in London, 1895 for instance it is possible to distinguish the narrator's bipartition, in order to tell and show two different episodes which happen in two different places, simultaneously. In other moments, the authorial voice blends with that of the subject of the enunciation to such a degree that the less attentive reader may not be capable of organizing the discourse, in a first moment. James' gradual movement away from prose fiction so as to find his playwright identity; the lack of success as a playwright; his subsequent slow psychological recovery; the return to prose fiction; and, finally, the weak result of writing and revising prefaces to his literary works in order to put together The Novels and Tales of Henry James: The New York Edition (1905), are some of the most conspicuous events in James' trajectory discussed in Author, Author

Graphene and graphene nanoribbons have been attracting a lot of interest from the scientific community because of their novel properties. In this work, a systematic research has been done on the stability and energetics of divacancy, vacancy and Stone-Wales defects in graphene and zigzag graphene nanoribbons. With this goal in mind, ab initio density functional calculations within the GGA approximation, using ultrasoft pseudopotentials and a plane wave basis were done. Also, STM images were simulated for some selected defects. Besides, two new defects, not published elsewhere (to the best knowledge of the author), with very low formation energy are reported
