RESILIENCE is the capacity of people to effectively cope with, adjust, or recover from stress or adversity. It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin' Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much. On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to the profession I love and shaped who I have become. At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle." Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality! Take care, Ken Pon Principal Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient. Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient: Have the courage to be imperfect Take time for yourself Sign up for that course, join that club Be active every day in as many ways as you can Spend time with people who make you feel good Laugh out loud each day Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat) Do one thing now that you've been putting off Focus more on things you can control Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/) Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on this decision (love it/dislike it etc). A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor, Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook. Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases, does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the message being shared. But very thankfully, and in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport. The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football, volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of dedication to High School Sport! Myers Concert and Stage Bands were unable to perform this year due to COVID, but we were lucky enough to still be able to play our instruments. Vince Gassi, a composer from Toronto, was commissioned by the W.R. Myers Band Parent Association to write a piece for the Concert Band. The band students met with Mr. Gassi via Zoom in October to talk to him about the piece and the writing process. He completed the piece for us in January and we began working on it. Again the band students met with Mr. Gassi on Zoom for him to listen to us play and give feedback. But unfortunately due to the COVID restrictions, we were unable to premier the piece. Hopefully, next year we will be able to play Tomorrow Shines Soon. It is an ongoing process that involves learning the truth of residential schools and also respecting Indigenous culture. September is an important time of the year because that is when First Nation, Metis, and Inuit children were taken from their homes to residential schools. We wear our orange shirts in September to remind ourselves of how residential schools stripped children of their language and culture. But, the efforts to eliminate indigenous culture were unsuccessful. Indigenous culture thrives in the modern world, despite the dark history. This year, we celebrate indigenous vibrant cultures by learning a Blackfoot word of the week, making commemorative pins, and by watching Jerry First Charger's dance group and learning about hoop dancing. We also saw Mr. Leavitt sporting some wicked eye makeup with his Rasputin costume - if you don't know who Rasputin is, look him up! 16 Carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and wearing scary costumes are some of the time-honored traditions of Halloween. Yet, the Halloween holiday has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced "SAH-win"), a pagan religious celebration to welcome the harvest at the end of summer, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts (to the trick the spirits) as they believed the veil between the living and spirit world grew thinnest at that time. 17 Pack. Every year, the event brings together approximately 700 young people from across the province to compete in 45 trade and technology areas (30 trade and technology areas at the high school level and 45 at the post secondary level). The competition provides an opportunity for young Albertans studying a skilled trade or technology to be tested against exacting standards and against their peers. Students vie to win the honour of being crowned best in province in their chosen discipline, and for the opportunity to join Team Alberta for the Skills Canada National Competition. »us Owen Schnoor and Carter Jensen Events at the High School level include: competed at the Regional competition in Lethbridge. DNA mismatch repair proteins play an important role in maintaining the integrity of the genetic information during replication and homologous recombination. The MutS-homologous (MSH) and MutL-homologous (MLH) proteins are highly conserved among all prokaryotes and eukaryotes. We have isolated two mutS homologous genes from Zea mays, named Mus1 and Mus2. Phylogenetic analysis identifies Mus1 as a member of the MSH2 protein family. Mus2 is an ortholog of the Arabidopsis thaliana MSH7 protein and belongs to a subgroup of MSH proteins that is possibly plant-specific. Mus1 and Mus2 are expressed at very low levels. Mus1 is located on chromosome 7L near locus b32B, and mus2 maps on chromosome 3S

During the day students and teachers both dressed Hillbilly style. An assembly held in periods three and four featured a skit, explaining the origin of Sadie Hawkins Day. After the skit had ended the cookie eating contest began. Most of the guys munching the store-bought cookies had already baked their own earlier that day in the cookie baking contest. Finally Mr. Johnson, having survived the cookie throwing contest with the audience, was proclaimed the winner. First prize was a chocolate chip cookie pillow. Later that night a Sadie Hawkins dance was held, with the girls inviting their favorite guys. In addition to dancing, couples could also have their pictures taken against a farm-style backdrop or get ‘married’ for the duration of the dance by Marryin' Sam (alias Mr. Johnson). A knee-slapping good time was had by all. On the 31 st of October, student council proclaimed Hat Day. Students could wear any type of hat they chose. Prizes were awarded during the day for the best hats in the following categories: biggest, smallest, most original, most colorful, weirdest, and best all 'round hat. The second annual Green Friday was held on March 14. The assembly featured a collection of skits by the drama class, a dance by the cheerleaders, and the much awaited P.O.O.P. (Pig Out On Pie) contest was held at the end of the assembly. Thirteen students and two teachers, dressed in garbage bags, participated in P.O.O.P. After a lot of eating and even more throwing of green pies, Greg Saunders was unanimously declared the winner, with five pies eaten. The day wound up with a car stuffing contest, won by the girls who stuffed 41 girls as compared to the boys’ 36. Nickel Flicks, featuring Green Eggs and Ham, and Green ice cream sold in the cafeteria completed the fun. 14 15 GRADUATION ’80 . . . dance practice at noon (ow!)... a new suit (dress) that suddenly doesn’t fit.. . REACTION-MECHANISM OF THE RECONSTITUTED TRICARBOXYLATE CARRIER FROM RAT-LIVER MITOCHONDRIA

BISACCIA F, DEPALMA A, Dierks T, KRAMER R, PALMIERI F. REACTION-MECHANISM OF THE RECONSTITUTED TRICARBOXYLATE CARRIER FROM RAT-LIVER MITOCHONDRIA. BIOCHIMICA ET BIOPHYSICA ACTA. 1993;1142(1-2):139-145.Transport of citrate and malate by the tricarboxylate carrier from rat liver mitochondria has been studied in a reconstituted system. Homologous citrate/citrate antiport and heterologous (electroneutral) citrate/malate antiport was kinetically analyzed. The maximal rates of the two exchange modes did not vary significantly within pH 7.0 to 7.8 which is the optimum pH-range for transport activity. On the other hand, the apparent transport affinity varied considerably within this range. Calculations on the basis of the different pK values for citrate and malate indicate that only H-citrate 2 -and malate 2 -are accepted as transport species by the tricarboxylate carrier. A complete set of half-saturation constants was established for citrate and malate on both the external and the internal side of the membrane. Both the K(m) and V(max) for citrate and malate were independent of the nature of the countersubstrate at the other side of the membrane. Bisubstrate initial velocity analyses of the exchange reaction resulted in a kinetic pattern which is consistent with a sequential antiport mechanism. This type of mechanism implies formation of a ternary complex of the carrier with two substrate molecules before the transport reaction occurs. Thus the tricarboxylate carrier falls into the functional family of mitochondrial carrier proteins showing sequential transport mechanisms
