Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!
Take care,
Ken Pon

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control
Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/)
Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the
message being shared. Enjoy! 5

A Message ■
from ou„r awth^lOtiC DiPOCtO
It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

academic Awards
The WR Myers Academic Awards Night would not be possible without the many and generous contributions from our local Taber
businesses and families. Our community has donated 16 885 this year!
Unfortunately, we could not celebrate the academic successes of our students with our annual evening event. But we still took the time
acknowledge these amazing and talented students on their academic accomplishments! We hope to return to our evening event next
year!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play

Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

IT'S
TIME!
The end of summer has come and with it, the
start of a new school year. We've begun the
day with an assembly to welcome back
students and staff. This year we welcomed
some wonderful new staff members to myers
along with many new students. The halls were
filled with plenty of students sporting smiles
and some great fits.
The year started off with a bang! The X-Wing
boys bathroom was open for a month without
being closed down once, a new record for
W.R. Myers students.

This year at Myers, we had a bulletin
board saying that reconciliation should
be a verb. That is because we know
reconciliation comes through actions. It
is an ongoing process that involves
learning the truth of residential schools
and also respecting Indigenous culture.
September is an important time of the
year because that is when First Nation,
Metis, and Inuit children were taken
from their homes to residential schools.
We wear our orange shirts in
September to remind ourselves of how
residential schools stripped children of
their language and culture.
But, the efforts to eliminate indigenous
culture were unsuccessful. Indigenous
culture thrives in the modern world,
despite the dark history. This year, we
celebrate indigenous vibrant cultures
by learning a Blackfoot word of the
week, making commemorative pins,
and by watching Jerry First Charger's
dance group and learning about hoop
dancing.

This year we had yet another
spooky Halloween celebration,
our Rebels were fangtastically
dressed in a variety of great
costumes including spies,
holidays, scarecrows, and
superheros. We also saw Mr.
Leavitt sporting some wicked eye
makeup with his Rasputin
costume - if you don't know who
Rasputin is, look him up!
16
Carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and
wearing scary costumes are some of the
time-honored traditions of Halloween. Yet, the
Halloween holiday has its roots in the ancient
Celtic festival of Samhain (a Gaelic word
pronounced "SAH-win"), a pagan religious
celebration to welcome the harvest at the end
of summer, when people would light bonfires
and wear costumes to ward off ghosts (to the
trick the spirits) as they believed the veil
between the living and spirit world grew
thinnest at that time.

Remembrance Day is a time to remember
and reflect on those who gave their lives
for our freedom. As the years pass, for
some, it becomes harder and harder to
understand just what was given up during
those wartime years. We owe the
freedom we enjoy everyday to those who
fought in unthinkable conditions.
Thank you to Mr Leavitt for sharing your
your heartfelt message and thank you to

I MERRY CHRISTMAS
The weather our last week before Christmas
holidays turned out to be one for the history
books! Windchills in the mid -30's to low
-40's, meant school buses weren't running for
most of the week. Unfortunately this
impacted our overall attendance and our
yearly Christmas Festivities! But don't worry,
those who were able to attend still did so
with big smiles, gifts exchanged between
friends..... and of course the infamous "Ugly
Christmas Sweaters" were out in full force!
V The Concert and Stage Bands both had
V incredibly busy years. The Stage Band kicked
■ off the year by playing at the Tri-School BBQ
V and Awards Night. The Music of the Night
■ Concert was held in November this year. Due to
■ bad weather, it got postponed by a week but was
F a great success and it highlighted some of the talents
that are in Taber. Finally, after not happening for
several years due to Covid, the Stage Band performed
at the Town of Taber's Remembrance Day Ceremony.
The Concert Band played Shindler's List and featured
Liam Ellingson on the violin at the school's Remembrance
Day Ceremony. Thatcher Hughes was the bugler at both
events. In December, the annual Christmas Concert was
held and Tyler Gurney won for the best dressed
instrument. In May, the Concert Band performed at the
Graduation Ceremony. And both bands played at the
80s Themed Year End Concert.

THIS YEAR we had a BLAST at our pep rallies! Who doesn't love a spirited game of
DODGE BALL, or how about a game of 4 CORNERS to get everybody up and moving!
Plus there is always room to try NEW things, like MAT SURFING!!
DID YOU KNOW....
1. Why do we have pep rallies? To build school
spirit and enthusiasm for the school's athletic
teams and other extracurricular events. The
purpose of a pep rally is to bring students, staff,
and members of the community together to show ---- '
support for the school and its teams, and to build
excitement for upcoming events!
2. There are academic and extracurricular
benefits that come from the loyalty that is built up
from the camaraderie enjoyed at such events.
3. Pep Rallies provide some much needed
laughter after potentially stressful weeks in the classroom

REGIONAL AND PROVINCIAL
CARTER JENSEN Established in 1992, the Provincial Skills Canada
Competition is Alberta's largest career exploration
experience.
Every year, the event brings together approximately 700
young people from across the province to compete in 45
trade and technology areas (30 trade and technology
areas at the high school level and 45 at the post
secondary level). The competition provides an opportunity
for young Albertans studying a skilled trade or technology
to be tested against exacting standards and against their
peers. Students vie to win the honour of being crowned
best in province in their chosen discipline, and for the
opportunity to join Team Alberta for the Skills Canada
National Competition.
»us
Owen Schnoor and Carter Jensen Events at the High School level include:
competed at the Regional competition in
Lethbridge. Both thoroughly enjoyed the
experience. Carter secured a position in the
Provincial competition in Edmonton, Alberta
and represented Southwestern Alberta along
with another competitor from Claresholm AB.
There were 22 competitors in the Welding
Bvent. It was a 6 hour event over 2 days. The
competitors had to construct a rocketship on a
platform. They had to meticulously follow a
detailed blueprint that instructed them on the
ype of welds (GMAW or SMAW,
JP^I/downhill and stitch welds) they had to
Jse in specifics areas of the build. Carter
placed 8th considering (in his words) most of
e competitors had a lot more experience than
16 had. Way to go Carter!

Structure and expression of the Zea mays mutS-homologs Mus1 and Mus2
DNA mismatch repair proteins play an important role in maintaining the integrity of the genetic information during replication and homologous recombination. The MutS-homologous (MSH) and MutL-homologous (MLH) proteins are highly conserved among all prokaryotes and eukaryotes. We have isolated two mutS homologous genes from Zea mays, named Mus1 and Mus2. Phylogenetic analysis identifies Mus1 as a member of the MSH2 protein family. Mus2 is an ortholog of the Arabidopsis thaliana MSH7 protein and belongs to a subgroup of MSH proteins that is possibly plant-specific. Mus1 and Mus2 are expressed at very low levels. Mus1 is located on chromosome 7L near locus b32B, and mus2 maps on chromosome 3S

Senior High Shennanigans
The year’s activities started out with
Sadie Hawkins Day, held on Oct. 19,
1979. During the day students and teachers
both dressed Hillbilly style. An assembly
held in periods three and four featured
a skit, explaining the origin of Sadie
Hawkins Day. After the skit had ended
the cookie eating contest began. Most of
the guys munching the store-bought
cookies had already baked their own earlier
that day in the cookie baking contest.
Finally Mr. Johnson, having survived the
cookie throwing contest with the audience,
was proclaimed the winner. First
prize was a chocolate chip cookie pillow.
Later that night a Sadie Hawkins dance
was held, with the girls inviting their
favorite guys. In addition to dancing, couples
could also have their pictures taken
against a farm-style backdrop or get
‘married’ for the duration of the dance by
Marryin' Sam (alias Mr. Johnson). A
knee-slapping good time was had by all.
On the 31 st of October, student council
proclaimed Hat Day. Students could
wear any type of hat they chose. Prizes
were awarded during the day for the best
hats in the following categories: biggest,
smallest, most original, most colorful,
weirdest, and best all 'round hat.
The second annual Green Friday was
held on March 14. The assembly featured
a collection of skits by the drama class, a
dance by the cheerleaders, and the
much awaited P.O.O.P. (Pig Out On Pie)
contest was held at the end of the assembly.
Thirteen students and two teachers,
dressed in garbage bags, participated in
P.O.O.P. After a lot of eating and even
more throwing of green pies, Greg Saunders
was unanimously declared the winner,
with five pies eaten.
The day wound up with a car stuffing
contest, won by the girls who stuffed 41
girls as compared to the boys’ 36. Nickel
Flicks, featuring Green Eggs and Ham,
and Green ice cream sold in the cafeteria
completed the fun.

These are but a few of the people who have helped us no end in preparing for this time.
As we go out into the world, all of us should remember that only we have to be satisfied with
our success. At no time should we let our ambitions become dominated by someone elses.
. Only your opinion is truly of significance.
Our experiences in the last twelve years have not completely prepared us for the upcoming
entrance into the outside world. Up to now we’ve always had our friends and family to lend us
their support. Now we will.be making our own decisions most of the time, it will no doubt be a
frightening time at.first but hopefully we can all handle it.
I can see us all now, marching bravely forth, armed with our diplomas, re;
problems of the world and to meet its challenges. Already we have saved th
this rain. Surely this is an omen. " ' J i

REACTION-MECHANISM OF THE RECONSTITUTED TRICARBOXYLATE CARRIER FROM RAT-LIVER MITOCHONDRIA
BISACCIA F, DEPALMA A, Dierks T, KRAMER R, PALMIERI F. REACTION-MECHANISM OF THE RECONSTITUTED TRICARBOXYLATE CARRIER FROM RAT-LIVER MITOCHONDRIA. BIOCHIMICA ET BIOPHYSICA ACTA. 1993;1142(1-2):139-145.Transport of citrate and malate by the tricarboxylate carrier from rat liver mitochondria has been studied in a reconstituted system. Homologous citrate/citrate antiport and heterologous (electroneutral) citrate/malate antiport was kinetically analyzed. The maximal rates of the two exchange modes did not vary significantly within pH 7.0 to 7.8 which is the optimum pH-range for transport activity. On the other hand, the apparent transport affinity varied considerably within this range. Calculations on the basis of the different pK values for citrate and malate indicate that only H-citrate 2 -and malate 2 -are accepted as transport species by the tricarboxylate carrier. A complete set of half-saturation constants was established for citrate and malate on both the external and the internal side of the membrane. Both the K(m) and V(max) for citrate and malate were independent of the nature of the countersubstrate at the other side of the membrane. Bisubstrate initial velocity analyses of the exchange reaction resulted in a kinetic pattern which is consistent with a sequential antiport mechanism. This type of mechanism implies formation of a ternary complex of the carrier with two substrate molecules before the transport reaction occurs. Thus the tricarboxylate carrier falls into the functional family of mitochondrial carrier proteins showing sequential transport mechanisms
