In this Reply, we show that the authors of the preceding Comment have not contested any of the major results presented in our original paper [R. V. Nair and R. Vijaya, Phys. Rev. A 76, 053805 (2007)], since the defects have not been quantified in their calculations and the extinction may also arise from factors other than those mentioned in the Comment
Aqua: Network-Accelerated Memory Offloading for LLMs in Scale-Up GPU Domains
Inference on large-language models (LLMs) is constrained by GPU memory capacity. A sudden increase in the number of inference requests to a cloud-hosted LLM can deplete GPU memory, leading to contention between multiple prompts for limited resources. Modern LLM serving engines deal with the challenge of limited GPU memory using admission control, which causes them to be unresponsive during request bursts. We propose that preemptive scheduling of prompts in time slices is essential for ensuring responsive LLM inference, especially under conditions of high load and limited GPU memory. However, preempting prompt inference incurs a high paging overhead, which reduces inference throughput. We present Aqua, a GPU memory management framework that significantly reduces the overhead of paging inference state; achieving both responsive and high throughput inference even under bursty request patterns. We evaluate Aqua by hosting several state-of-the-art large generative ML models of different modalities on servers with 8 Nvidia H100 80G GPUs. Aqua improves the responsiveness of LLM inference by 20X compared to the state-of-the-art. It improves LLM inference throughput over a single long prompt by 4X
Why Doesn't Africa Get More Equity Investment? Frontier Stock Markets, Firm Size and Asset Allocations of Global Emerging Market Funds
This paper addresses the question of investment in sub-Saharan African listed securities by examining characteristics of the continent’s 15 equity markets, the rise and fall of African regional funds, and the asset allocation trends for global emerging market (GEM) funds. The data shows that South Africa is now a leading destination of capital, but that few managers invest elsewhere on the continent. However, we find that African markets are not treated differently than other markets and present evidence that small market size and low levels of liquidity are a binding deterrent for foreign institutional investors. Thus, orthodox market variables rather than market failure appear to explain Africa’s low absolute levels of inward equity flows. The paper then turns to new data from firm surveys to explore why African firms remain small. The implications of our findings are threefold: (a) efforts to encourage greater private investment in these markets should concentrate on domestic audiences and specialized regional funds, (b) the depth and success of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange can perhaps be better utilized to benefit other parts of the continent, and (c) any long-term strategy should concentrate on the underlying barriers to firm entry and growth.sub-Saharan African, equity markets, global emerging market,inward equity flows, private investment, Johannesburg Stock Exchange
3D Ground Response Analysis of Simplified Kutch Basin by Spectral Element Method
The damage pattern observed during the 1819 Kutch earthquake and 2001 Bhuj earthquake of magnitude Mw>7.7 in India implied the significance of the effect of Kutch basin on seismic ground motion. In the present study, the Kutch rift basin is modeled as a simplified rectangular basin of size 150km × 90km × 1.5km. The shear wave velocity of the Kutch region varies from 300m/s at the surface to 800m/s at the depth of 60m. Three-dimensional ground response analysis is carried out for the simplified Kutch basin subjected to ricker wave, using the spectral element code SPEED. The soil medium is modeled through visco-elastic soil model, where the damping is represented by Quality factor. It is found out from the numerical analysis that maximum amplification of 3.6 times occurs at the corner of the basin where interference of waves reflected from multiple edges happen. The long period structures with fundamental period in the range of 1.5-2.5s located near the basin edge are found to be significantly affected by the basin effect

Britannica encyclopedia is a prestigious name in the scholarly world. There was quite a commotion when Nature published a report comparing Britannica with Wikepedia - an online free encyclopedia. The report concluded that the number of faults/discrepencies in Britannica is slightly lower compared to Wikipedia. In response to this publication of Nature, Britannica waged a war on Nature. This article highlights the vast possibilities and hurdles for Wikipedia to grow into an authentic online reference source. It also highlights with statistics the strengths, weaknesses and growing popularity of Wikipedia. The author concludes that using online wikepedia as a reference source instead of costly encyclopedias like Britannica is both economically and strategically beneficial to Public Libraries and Schools
