Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Association between calcium-regulating hormones, 25(OH)D, IGF-I, and BMD in elderly women who were not estrogen or bisphosphonate users.
Objective(s): Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a frequent
condition in elderly women, and represents a risk factor for
increased bone resorption. Measurement of BMD is currently
considered of diagnostic value to predict an individual
long-term fracture risk, and BMD values correlate with
several demographics and anthropometric parameters, and
with markers of bone metabolism and calcium-regulating
hormones. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship
between BMD, BMI, PTH, vitamin D (25(OH)D),
and IGF-I in elderly women.
Material & Methods: A group of 31 postmenopausal women
over age 65 (median 68 years, range 65-74) who were not
bisphosphonates, estrogen, calcium or vitamin D users, and
had no history of fracture, were enclosed in the study. The
following parameters have been recorded: age, age at menarche
and menopause, weight, height, BMI (kg/m2), systolic and
diastolic blood pressure. Lumbar spine (L2-L4) BMD (g/cm2)
using DXA, serum albumin, calcium, PTH (ng/L), 25(OH)D
(nmol/L), and IGF-I (μg/L) were measured in all patients.
Results: The main results are reported in the Table. There
were no hypertensive patients, and both s-albumin and s-calcium
were within the normal range (41-47 g/L, and 2.10-2.55
mmol/L, respectively). There was an inverse correlation between
age and both 25(OH)D (R=-0.50, p=0.020) and IGF-I
(R=-0.7, p<0.0001), and between BMD and PTH (R=-0.48,
p=0.027). Moreover, a significant relationship between IGF-I and both BMD (R=0.64, p=0.0016) and PTH (R=0.48, p=
0.026) was found, while IGF-I did not correlate with 25(OH)D
(R=0.16, p=0.47) and BMI (R=-0.89, p=0.70). Age at menarche
and menopause were independent parameters (p=NS). Conclusion(s): In this group of elderly women there was a
strong relationship of osteoporosis (expressed as BMD values)
to calcium-regulating hormones, such as PTH and IGFI,
while BMI and 25(OH)D seem to be independent of bone
mineralization status
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Usefulness of ICTP and PRAP5b measurements in women with bone metastases from breast carcinoma and severe osteoporosis: Preliminary results.
Prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in Free-ranging Red Deer from Italian Central Alps: a two seasons survey
Background: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are foodborne zoonotic pathogens of priority importance. Wild ruminants are increasing their density and distribution across Europe and have been identified as potential STEC carriers. We investigated STEC prevalence in free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Stelvio National Park (Italian Alps), where a culling plan was activated to reduce their density.
Methods: Feces were collected from 201 culled animals during two winter seasons (2016-2018) from three Park areas with different anthropization levels. Bacteriological analysis was performed and E. coli colonies were tested by PCR for stx genes. PCR for additional virulence factors (eaeA, ST and LT coding genes and subAB locus) were performed on STEC isolates obtained during the first season. Red deer STEC virulence gene profiles were compared with those detected in human STEC strains causing Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) in the same period in Italy.
Results: An overall 19.9% (95% CI: 14.4%-25.4%) STEC prevalence was observed. Prevalence was significantly higher in offsprings compared to yearlings and adults. Four strains harbored both stx genes, 23 and 13 possessed stx2 and stx1 only, respectively. Nine out of the 12 strains (75%) collected from the first season possessed the subAB locus. No red deer STEC isolate possessed the eaeA gene suggesting the existence of genetic differences with national HUS-associated STEC strains.
Conclusions: STEC shedding was observed in red deer population during two consecutive seasons, especially in young animals and in all areas, regardless of anthropization level, suggesting a possible role of this species as STEC carrier. Our results strengthen the hypothesis that red deer may represent a carrier for LEE-negative, subAB positive STEC strains, which have been reported in human diarrheal cases. Further characterization of virulence genes asset would help to define the zoonotic potential of wildlife-associated STEC, also considering human consumption of game meat
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
