Model-Based Clustering, Classification, and Density Estimation Using mclust in R

    No full text
Model-based clustering and classification methods provide a systematic statistical approach to clustering, classification, and density estimation via mixture modeling. The model-based framework allows the problems of choosing or developing an appropriate clustering or classification method to be understood within the context of statistical modeling. The mclust package for the statistical environment R is a widely adopted platform implementing these model-based strategies. The package includes both summary and visual functionality, complementing procedures for estimating and choosing models. Key features of the book: An introduction to the model-based approach and the mclust R package A detailed description of mclust and the underlying modeling strategies An extensive set of examples, color plots, and figures along with the R code for reproducing them Supported by a companion website, including the R code to reproduce the examples and figures presented in the book, errata, and other supplementary material Model-Based Clustering, Classification, and Density Estimation Using mclust in R is accessible to quantitatively trained students and researchers with a basic understanding of statistical methods, including inference and computing. In addition to serving as a reference manual for mclust, the book will be particularly useful to those wishing to employ these model-based techniques in research or applications in statistics, data science, clinical research, social science, and many other disciplines

Heterogeneous and tissue-specific regulation of effector T cell responses by IFN-gamma during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection.

IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells

Nutritional features of leek cultivars and effect of selenium-enriched leaves from Goliath variety on bread physical quality and antioxidant attributes.

    No full text
Despite high nutritional value, A. porrum leaves are usually wasted. To evaluate the use efficiency of leek selenium fortified leaves in bread production, cultivar Goliath was selected among nine leek varieties based on quality and antioxidant characteristics. Fortified plants attained higher leaf content of Se and polyphenols compared to pseudo-stems. The addition of Se leaves increased bread polyphenol stability during baking, but it resulted in bread porosity decrease compared to both traditionally-made bread and bread containing leaf powder of non-fortified plants. About 31 % of the daily required Se is provided by 100 g of bread enriched with Se

Exogenous factors related to the adoption of an innovation: Domain Name Registration in the Swiss hospitality industry

    No full text
Based on diffusion models by Bass and Rogers, Scaglione et al (2004a, 2004b, 2005) studied the evolution of domain name registrations (DNR) by Swiss accommodation enterprises. This research extends these studies by analysing the relationship of exogenous variables with the adoption of domain names. A better understanding of the adoption of innovations by tourism organisations can shed light on better use of these innovations and subsequently better value for customers. The results of this study show that the adoption of an innovation, i.e. domain names, relates to three exogenous socio-economic trends. Information technology variables were most relevant followed by macroeconomic national variables such as the Swiss Market Index (SMI), Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) and Appropriate Moment for Important Acquisition (AMIA) but not the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The least important set of variables related to the tourism economy
