Biovariability: the starting point for developing reliable motor feedback procedures in sports
Modern technologies allow multifactorial analyses of sports movement. Their output might be used as a reliable feed-back for sports motor applications, but individual variability must be assessed first, to gain more insight on treating data, interpreting results and presenting suggestions. Former studies evidenced important aspects of multijoint coordination and successfully interpreted the role of many kinematic/kinetic measures. Nevertheless they didn't examine biovariability extensively. In this work a common, Widely-studied field test (vertical jump) was chosen to evaluate intralintersubject variance. Results showed a considerable variability in many kinematic and kinetic parameters. Some suggestions on treating data are proposed. Some indications of possible applications are presented

The EUROShoE approach to ergonomics of foot and shoe.
This paper describes the methodological approach developed in the EUROShoE project, whose aim was to realise biomechanically oriented shoes on a mass-customised scale. Users’ data collection, including anthropometry, preferences and biomechanical behaviour, was used to carry out a completely customised (custom-fit approach) footwear design or, at least, to define rules for choosing the most respectful shoe model among a set of preordered ones (best fit approach).
Biomechanical properties of different shoe models (A), subjective
perception of footwear comfort characteristics (B) and different shoes influences on walking biomechanics (C) were investigated in order to understand: how people’s comfort relates to the shoe style and constructive aspect (correlation between A and B); how footwear styles and constructive parameters influence natural walking biomechanics (correlation between A and C).
This methodology led to the definition of a set of ergonomic design rules/recommendations that were later implemented in the production process of an automated footwear company
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Assessment of 3D surface anthropometry methods for mass customized shoes
The aim of this paper is to assess the accuracy and the repeatability of measures made by means of a stereophotogrammetric equipment and processed by a special software developed within the EUROShoE project (Growth Programme, European Commission), with the purpose to collect three-dimensional data from the surface of the foot. A prosthetic foot was marked with black stickers (5 mm diameter) corresponding to 10 anatomical landmarks, and repeated acquisitions of its surface were performed within a day and through days. Measures of the distance between pairs of markers were made manually on the artificial foot and estimated through the acquired surface data. The mean accuracy computed on 14 distances was 1.1 mm (SD = 1.2). The intra and inter day variability was assessed by considering repeated measures of conventional shoe making variables (e.g. stick length, ball girth, instep girth,...) produced by using dedicated software. The results, expressed in term of coefficients of variation, ranged between 0.2 and 0.8%. The achieved results demonstrate that the equipment and the software ensure adequate measures for the shoe making process (i.e. characterization and choice of the last) and for an easy detection of the human foot surface. Both of them are key steps for the implementation of best fit or custom made shoe production, even if attention must be paid to enviromental settings during data collection in a retail shop contest
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
