Tolkien’s Correspondence with Arthur Ransome', edits a letter from Tolkien to Ransome held in the Brotherton Library of the University of Leeds. On December 13th 1937, the celebrated children’s author Arthur Ransome wrote to J. R. R. Tolkien with a few comments on Tolkien’s newly published book The Hobbit. Tolkien lost no time in replying, and his letter provides one of his earliest comments on his published fiction, and a relatively early explicit commentary on his mythic writing. This article publishes for the first time Tolkien’s response to Ransome in its entirety, and answers some of the questions regarding the chronology of Tolkien’s correspondence which arise. An analysis of the letter reveals that while, as many scholars have shown, the ‘sources’ and ‘inspirations’ of The Hobbit include the likes of Beowulf and the Poetic Edda, already in 1937—and contrary to his own later claims—Tolkien’s principal primary source for fleshing out his prose stories with characters, places, and references to historical events was the vast legendarium he had created himself
Development Length Criteria for Plain and Ransome Bars
No full textHistorical bars such as plain and Ransome bars were used in reinforced concrete structures until about the mid-1950s in the U.S and Canada. Bond provisions for plain and Ransome bars are not included in the current edition of Canadian and American codes. Twenty-two splice specimens reinforced with either plain, Ransome, or deformed bars were therefore tested monotonically under four-point loading as a part of a multi-year experimental investigation to develop bond provisions for plain and Ransome bars. The reinforcement was cast either in the bottom or top position. Load versus deflection behaviour, cracking patterns, and maximum load attained by all specimens are presented. Moment curvature analysis was performed for the specimens to calculate the tensile resistance of the reinforcement at the maximum load level.
Reliability-based provisions for splice and development length were proposed for plain bars from a test database of splice specimens. A comparison of the proposed development length required for plain bars as compared to deformed bars, calculated in accordance with CSA A23.3, suggests that plain bars require fifty percent more development length than deformed bars when cast in the bottom position. However, when reinforcement is cast in the top position, the required development length for plain square and plain round bars is two and three times that for modern deformed bars, respectively.
Similarly, reliability-based provisions for splice length were proposed for Ransome bars. A comparison of the proposed splice length of Ransome bars and that calculated for deformed bars in accordance with CSA A23.3 suggests that the bond capacity of Ransome bars closely matches to that of deformed bars when bars are cast in the bottom position. However, the required splice length for Ransome bars is around 25% more than that for modern deformed bars when cast in the top position

Neste trabalho, não procuramos descrever a sua biografia, nem apresentar toda a sua vasta obra de cerca de duas dezenas de títulos publicados. Ransome- Wallis foi, reveladamente, um genuíno entusiasta do caminho-de-ferro, com a possibilidade de visitar muitos países do mundo e de conhecer vários sistemas de ferrovias. E entre os percursos que realizou, Portugal inscreveu-se nos seus horizontes mais do que uma vez.
O nosso fito será, por isso e por enquanto,
fazer a partilha com o leitor das impressões de R.-W. acerca dos caminhos-de-ferro

Ransome-Wallis (abrevidamente, R-W), nasceu 10 de janeiro de 1906, em Worksop, no distrito de Bassetlaw em Nottinghamshire, Inglaterra. Foi sempre um aficionado por locomotivas e por ferrovias.
