Namelessness in the Works of George R. R. Martin and Ursula Le Guin

    No full text
The thesis explores the significance and implications of namelessness in fantasy literature on the example of A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin and the Earthsea series by Ursula Le Guin. The literary use of namelessness serves to develop characters, examine power structures, and challenge traditional notions of identity and belonging. The author uses various theoretical perspectives, including those of Josef Campbell, Carl Jung, Michel Foucault, Gérard Genette, Jane Bliss, and Lao Tzu to analyze the phenomenon. By drawing on these diverse perspectives and applying different methods of analysis, the thesis highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the study, drawing from theories in history, mythology, psychology, philosophy, and literary criticism

Corvids and Canines in George R. R. Martin?s A Song of Ice and Fire

The series, A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin has become increasingly popular among readers even during a time when fantasy novels have decreased in popularity. This rise in readership and viewership (with the television series Game of Thrones), has effectively started several discussions about the methods and choices of the author in regards to the plot, symbols, and characters. This paper will look at two characters within the novels, namely the corvids and the canines Martin uses as catalysts for furthering the plot and understanding the main characters. This paper examines the historical use of the two animals and their relationship with one another as well as how Martin uses them to engage with the reader

Diplomsko delo obravnava in primerja dve izmed najpriljubljenejših fantazijskih del vseh časov, Gospodarja prstanov J. R. R. Tolkiena in Pesem ledu in ognja Georgea R. R. Martina. The thesis discusses and compares two of the most popular fantasy works of all time: John R. R. Tolkien\u27s The Lord of the Rings and George R. R. Martin\u27s A Song of Ice and Fire. The theoretical part explor es the biographical elements and different historical background of the authors, which might have influenced the writings of the two works . It also examines elements that define the fantasy genre, among them recurring archetypes that typically occur in fantasy fiction. These theoretical aspects are then applied to the novel The Lord of the Rings and to A Song of Ice and Fire series. I examine the archetypes into which the main characters of both works fit, the secondary world and the theme of good and evil, discussing the similarities as well as the differences between the two works

Dalam A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms, konsep-konsep tersebut saling memengaruhi sehingga menunjukkan aspek liberal karya sastra. Kata kunci: Derridean, novel fantasi, undecidability This study analyzes the popular fantasy novel entitled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R. R. Martin in Derrida's perspective, especially his opinion about literature as a liberal institution. In Derrida's perspective, this study seeks to investigate the affinity in liberality, undecidability, iterability, khōra, and the text itself. In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, these concepts influence each other so that it shows the liberal aspects of literary works. This is shown through the structure in the narrative of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms which keeps the story dynamic and the narrative, with its liberal power, constantly tests its context to eliminate certain idealistic tendencies. Thus, the identity and ideality that are considered final are again questioned and made unstable by the text to reveal more meaning and possibility produced. Keywords: Derridean, fantasy novel, undecidability

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
